Summary: In this study, the mRNA expression of specific genes was investigated in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) compared to healthy controls. The results showed that the expression of ZO-1 was significantly decreased in AR patients, suggesting a lower contribution to the integrity of the nasal epithelial barrier. HDAC2 was also found to be associated with the pathogenesis of the disease.

Summary: Glomerular diseases are a major burden on public healthcare and finding therapeutic targets is crucial. CHILKBP, a focal adhesion protein, was found to play a role in maintaining podocyte structure and function. Loss of CHILKBP led to podocyte injury and kidney failure in mice. The interaction between CHILKBP and ZO-1, a junctional protein, was identified as a key pathway in podocyte homeostasis and their decreased expression was observed in patients with proteinuric kidney diseases.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the effect and mechanism of Xiaojianzhong decoction (XJZD) in preventing aspirin-induced gastric mucosal injury. The results showed that XJZD can alleviate inflammation response, maintain the gastric mucosal barrier's integrity, reduce apoptosis and necroptosis levels, and promote the proliferation and repair of gastric mucosal tissues. Its mechanism of action may be related to the regulation of TNF-α signaling. In addition, XJZD can correct metabolic disorders, mainly regulating amino acid metabolism pathways, and alleviate gastric mucosal injury and inflammation by regulating arachidonic acid metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, etc.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of combining aspirin and gastrodin on myocardial and gastric mucosal injury in response to myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. The results showed that the combination therapy improved cardiac function and reduced myocardial infarction size. Additionally, it protected the gastric mucosa and suppressed inflammation and pyroptosis in both the myocardium and gastric mucosa.

Summary: In this study, an in vitro model of gastrulation is used to investigate the role of tight junctions and apical/basolateral polarity in modulating BMP4 signaling and patterning in colonies of hPSCs. It is found that disrupting tight junctions allows BMP4 to activate pSMAD1/5 signaling, leading to loss of patterning phenotype and biased differentiation of pluripotent stem cells to PGCLCs. These findings provide insights into the regulation of signaling events and spatial emergence of cell types in vitro.

Summary: Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a critical role in lung cancer development by promoting invasiveness and metastasis. The expression levels of tight junction proteins, ZO-1 and ZO-2, were found to be lower in lung cancer tissues compared to normal lung tissues. Knockdown of ZO-1 and ZO-2 regulated cell migration and invasion and affected macrophage polarization. The GNAQ-ZO-1/2 axis may have a tumor-suppressive role in lung cancer development and progression.

Summary: This study found differences in ileal mucosa-associated microbiota (MAM) between Crohn's disease (CD) patients and healthy controls. The factors affecting MAM in CD patients are still unclear. Reduced levels of butyric acid-producing bacteria in the ileal MAM of CD patients with a history of abdominal surgery may play an important role in CD pathophysiology.
