The beta decay of Ge-82 was re-investigated using the newly commissioned tape station BEDO at the electron-driven ISOL (isotope separation on line) facility ALTO operated by the Institut de Physique Nucleaire, Orsay. The original motivation of this work was focused on the sudden occurrence in the light N = 49 odd-odd isotonic chain of a large number of J <= 1 states (positive or negative parity) in Ga-80 by providing a reliable intermediate example, viz., As-82. The extension of the As-82 level scheme towards higher energies from the present work has revealed three potential 1(+) states above the already known one at 1092 keV. In addition our data allow ruling out the hypothesis that the 843 keV level could be a 1(+) state. A detailed analysis of the level scheme using both an empirical core-particle coupling model and a fully microscopic treatment within a Skyrme-QRPA (quasiparticle random-phase approximation) approach using the finite-rank separable approximation was performed. From this analysis two conclusions can be drawn: (i) the presence of a large number of low-lying low-spin negative parity states is due to intruder states stemming from above the N = 50 shell closure, and (ii) the sudden increase, from As-82 to Ga-80, of the number of low-lying 1(+) states and the corresponding Gamow-Teller fragmentation are naturally reproduced by the inclusion of tensor correlations and couplings to 2p-2h excitations.

C. Delafosse, A. Goasduff, A. Kankainen, D. Verney, L. Al Ayoubi, O. Beliuskina, L. Canete, T. Eronen, R. P. de Groote, M. Hukkanen, F. Ibrahim, A. Illana, A. Jaries, L. Lalanne, I. D. Moore, D. Nesterenko, H. Penttila, S. Rinta-Antila, A. de Roubin, D. Thisse, R. Thoer, G. Tocabens

Summary: The beta-delayed gamma spectroscopy of As-81 was performed using a purified beam of Ge-81 ground state. The intrinsic half-life of the Ge-81 ground state was determined to be significantly shorter than the literature value. A new level scheme of As-81 was built and compared to shell-model calculations.

The Dipole Polarizability of the Doubly Magic Nuclei

N. E. Solonovich, N. N. Arsenyev, A. P. Severyukhin

Summary: The correlations between electric dipole polarizability, symmetry energy, and neutron skin thickness are studied using Ca-48, Ni-68, and Pb-208, which are doubly magic nuclei. The strength distribution of E1 transitions is calculated using the random phase approximation model based on the Skyrme nuclear energy density functional. By comparing with experimental data, the value of nuclear symmetry energy J = 31-38 MeV is constrained.

Summary: In quantum chromodynamics, the condensation of quark-antiquark pairs breaks the chiral symmetry of vacuum. Experiments with pionic tin atoms demonstrate that the symmetry is partially restored at high densities. Vacuum is not empty and is instead filled with quark-antiquark pairs, which form a condensate due to strong interaction. This condensation, known as chiral condensate, breaks the chiral symmetry of vacuum, and its expectation value decreases at high temperatures or high matter densities where the symmetry is partially restored.

Response of germanium detectors for high-energy γ-rays by 27Al(p, γ)28Si at Ep=992 keV

Rurie Mizuno, Megumi Niikura, Tokihiro Ikeda, Teiichiro Matsuzaki, Shintaro Go, Takeshi Y. Saito, Shin'ichiro Michimasa, Hiroyoshi Sakurai

Summary: The performance of germanium detectors for high-energy gamma-rays was evaluated. A 992-keV resonance in the Al-27(p, gamma)Si-28 reaction was used for the measurement at the RIKEN tandem accelerator. The energy of the excited state from the resonance was determined as 12540.7(2) keV. An energy calibration function and photo peak efficiency for Ge detectors up to 10.8-MeV photons were deduced using the newly determined excitation energy. The overall energy region achieved an energy accuracy of 0.3 keV. This reaction provides reliable energy and efficiency standards for high-energy gamma-rays.

Summary: A search for meteoritic iron artefacts in the Lake of Biel area in Switzerland has led to the identification of a single object, an arrowhead, with meteoritic origin. The object's elemental composition, mineralogy, and presence of cosmogenic 26Al provide strong evidence for its meteoritic nature. This discovery is significant for understanding the use and distribution of meteoritic iron in ancient societies.

Summary: Muonic x-ray spectroscopy is used to study the structure of atoms and nuclei by examining the energy levels of atomic orbitals. By utilizing implanted targets, it becomes possible to measure the absolute charge radii of long-lived radioactive isotopes that are otherwise difficult to obtain. This research provides valuable insight for laser spectroscopy with a high level of precision.

Emissions of Hydrogen Isotopes from the Nuclear Muon Capture Reaction in Si-nat

Seiya Manabe, Yukinobu Watanabe, Megumi Niikura, Keita Nakano, Takeshi Y. Saito, Daisuke Suzuki, Yoshitaka Kawashima, Dai Tomono, Akira Sato, Hideki Harano

Summary: The energy spectra of protons, deuterons, and tritons produced by the nuclear muon capture reaction in Si-nat were measured and compared with theoretical model calculations. The measurements were consistent with previous results, and the PHITS simulation generally reproduced the measured proton spectrum but underestimated it at higher emission energies. The HUTS simulation significantly underestimated the measured energy spectra of light complex particles in the high-energy region.

Sub-barrier fusion in C-12+Mg-26,Mg-24: Hindrance and oscillations

Summary: The existence of fusion hindrance in light heavy-ion systems of astrophysical interest is not well established. Investigating slightly heavier cases such as C-12+ Mg-26 may provide reliable extrapolation towards the lighter systems. This study aims to search for evidence of fusion hindrance in C-12+ Mg-26 and obtain information on the underlying physics through comparison and coupled-channels calculations.

Summary: The beta decay of 142Te90 to 142I89 was investigated for the first time. The parent nucleus was produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam with an energy of 345 MeV per nucleon, impinging on a 9Be target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. Excited states in 142I were established by beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy. The (1+) states in 142I were found to be predominantly formed by a Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron and a proton in specific orbitals.

On the Double gamma-Decay Width of the Quadrupole State: The Case of Sn-132

A. P. Severyukhin, N. N. Arsenyev

Summary: We discuss the mixing of simple and complex configurations of the giant dipole resonance in order to describe the double gamma-decay width of the 2(1)(+) state of an even-even spherical nucleus. The model used is based on the Skyrme energy density functional and takes into account a large configuration space. A prediction for the branching ratio of competitive gamma-gamma decay relative to single gamma-decay is made for the Sn-132 region of the nuclear chart.

Summary: The structure of the unbound F-15 nucleus was investigated by using radioactive O-14 beam and analyzing the corresponding reactions. This study confirmed the previously observed levels and discovered new resonances in F-15 nucleus. The analysis suggested that the wave functions of these resonances may be collectivized by coupling to nearby decay channels.
