Summary: Anorexia nervosa is a psycho-metabolic disorder with high risks of complications like refeeding syndrome, and it has the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric illnesses. Current treatment recommendations for anorexia nervosa patients may be too strict and need updating. Nutritional supplementation could potentially improve prognosis and healing process.

Summary: This study evaluated the plasma levels of APE-13 and ASP, as well as related metabolic and psychometric parameters, in patients with anorexia nervosa. The findings suggest that APE-13 and ASP may serve as biomarkers for anorexia nervosa, and their levels are associated with eating behavior, emotional behavior, and the severity of psychopathological symptoms of eating disorders.

Summary: This study developed and examined an observational measure of behavioral characteristics for youth with somatic symptom disorder (SSD). The measure, called the Somatization Behavioral Characteristics Questionnaire (SBCQ), showed good reliability and validity in both SSD and non-SSD groups. The SBCQ was able to differentiate between the two groups and may be useful in developing sensitive assessment tools for SSD.

Summary: This study examines the impact of attachment on microstructural white matter changes in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) before and after short-term and nutritional treatment. The sample included 22 female adolescent inpatients with AN and 18 healthy adolescents as the control sample. MRI scans were conducted during the acute state of AN and after weight restoration, and attachment patterns were classified using the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System. Results showed that attachment trauma was associated with region-specific white matter alterations in AN.

Summary: This study found that ginger extract can alleviate cisplatin-induced anorexia by regulating serotonin levels and the expression of 5-HT3A and 4 receptors in the blood and nodose ganglion tissues. The major components of the ginger extract, [6]-gingerol and [6]-shogaol, were identified and quantified. When treated together, they significantly reduced the decrease in food intake caused by cisplatin.

Summary: Bile acid diarrhea (BAD) has a significant impact on the demographics, bowel and somatic symptoms, and quality of life of patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). Patients with BAD are older, have a higher body mass index, experience more severe bowel dysfunction, and have a greater impact on quality of life. They are more likely to receive medication and are more prone to depression.

Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) on the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of infants from NICU hospitalization to one year post-discharge. The study found that lower HRQL during NICU stay was associated with earlier gestational age, postnatal corticosteroid usage, outborn status, and gastrostomy tube placement. Lower HRQL at 3 and 12 months post-discharge was associated with readmissions, home oxygen use, parent-reported difficulty breathing, lower developmental scores, and not playing with other children. Most parents reported similar or improved HRQL after discharge, but parents of infants with respiratory symptoms experienced less improvement. Efforts to improve parent HRQL should focus on respiratory symptoms and social isolation.

Summary: This study aims to determine if children with elbow flexion contracture (EFC) caused by brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are more likely to develop shoulder contracture and undergo surgical treatment. A retrospective review was conducted on children under 2 years old with BPBI who presented to a single children's hospital. The results showed that patients with EFC had reduced shoulder range of motion and higher odds of shoulder contracture and surgical treatment. Prompt referral to a BPBI specialty clinic is recommended for evaluation and potential surgery.
