Summary: This study aimed to assess postnatal growth in infants with and without major neonatal morbidities. The results showed that despite advances in neonatal care, postnatal growth remains a challenge in very low birth weight infants, particularly those with major neonatal morbidities.

Summary: In VLBW preterm infants, there are differences in the prevalence of IUGR and EUGR based on Fenton 2013 charts and INTERGROWTH-21st standards, with good concordance between Fenton and IW-21 for IUGR. IW-21 is more restrictive than Fenton in defining EUGR, and patients diagnosed with EUGR according to IW-21 are more likely to have neonatal morbidity.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the risk factors of hypothermia in very low/extremely low birth weight infants. Factors including body weight, failure to keep warm in time, neonatal resuscitation, gestational age, premature rupture of membranes, maternal combined complications, cesarean section, antenatal steroids, multiple birth, small for gestational age, 1 min Apgar score, and 5 min Apgar score were identified. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and intervention of hypothermia in VLBW/ELBW infants.

Summary: The study found that single-course ACS was positively related to feeding and growth outcomes in very-low-birth-weight preterm infants born at 28-32 weeks' gestation. However, this phenomenon was not observed in infants receiving repeated courses of ACS treatment. Overall, ACS treatment had shorter intubated ventilation time compared to non-ACS treatment for infants born at 28-32 weeks' gestation.

Summary: The study evaluated the cumulative impact of multiple evidence-based strategies on postnatal growth of extremely-low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants. Despite aggressive nutrition supplementation, most ELBW survivors born appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) at birth had weight, length, and head circumference below the 10th percentile at discharge.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the effects of slow rates of enteral feed advancement on the risk of NEC, mortality, and other morbidities in very preterm or VLBW infants. The results of 14 trials involving 4033 infants showed that slow advancement of enteral feed volumes probably does not reduce the risk of NEC, death, or feed intolerance, but may slightly increase the risk of invasive infection.

Summary: The study compared growth curves of very low birth weight preterm infants post-hospital discharge. Results showed substantial agreement between Fenton and Kim vs. Intergrowth-21st charts, but WHO and Intergrowth-21st had identified more cases of preterm infants below -2 z, suggesting the need for further investigation in clinical practice.

Summary: Protein content in donor breast milk (DBM) is often inadequate, leading to poor growth in very low birth weight infants. This study compared the growth outcomes of infants receiving different types of breast milk, finding that weight gain was highest in the MBM cohort, while linear growth comparable to MBM was achievable with DBM+. Overall, baseline protein enrichment in DBM appears safe for stable VLBW infants.

Summary: This study reveals that small for gestational age (SGA) preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) gradually develop a distinct gut microbiota profile in the early days of life, varying from appropriate for gestational age (AGA) preterm infants. Additionally, there is a noticeable separation in gut microbiota structure between the two groups on day 30.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the association between sepsis and postnatal weight growth in infants born with low birth weight or preterm gestational ages. Infants with sepsis showed similar early weight growth trajectories to those without sepsis, but experienced significant deficits in weight that became apparent several weeks after the onset of sepsis.

Summary: The delayed introduction of progressive enteral feeds beyond four days after birth may not reduce the risk of necrotising enterocolitis or death in very preterm or VLBW infants. It may slightly reduce feed intolerance and probably increase the risk of invasive infection.

However, the risk of thyroid dysfunction due to nutritional iodine deficiency is lower compared to being small for gestational age or having other neonatal morbidities.

Summary: This study compares gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP) with the Celiac Disease Adherence Test (CDAT) and suggests that fecal GIP may serve as a sensitive biomarker for detecting ongoing gluten intake that cannot be detected by current clinical methods. It may be useful in managing persistent gastrointestinal symptoms in celiac disease.

Summary: Experimental evidence suggests that alcohol is a risk factor for skin cancer, although epidemiological studies have produced inconsistent results. This study, conducted on participants from 10 European countries over a 15-year follow-up, found a positive association between alcohol intake and the risk of squamous-cell carcinoma, basal-cell carcinoma, and melanoma. The associations were stronger in men and more modest in women.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the utilization patterns of statins and other lipid-modifying agents during pregnancy in Norway from 2005 to 2018. The results showed a rapid decrease in statin prescription fills during the first trimester and a return to pre-pregnancy levels about one year postpartum. Although there was an increase in pregnancy-related statin use, the overall number of prescriptions filled was relatively low. Statin use was more common in women of higher age, higher weight, smoking, and with comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

Summary: This study investigated the association between nevus count and pigmentary characteristics with melanoma-specific mortality. The study found that in patients with thicker melanoma, darker pigmentary characteristics were associated with a higher risk of melanoma death. However, in women with thicker melanoma, lighter pigmentary characteristics and asymmetrical nevi may be associated with lower melanoma-specific mortality.

Summary: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an effective treatment for hematologic malignancies, but graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a major challenge. Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is a commonly used treatment for GVHD, but its use for GVHD prevention is limited. This randomized controlled trial found no significant difference in GVHD prevention between ECP and standard drug-based prophylaxis.
