Summary: Blueberries have beneficial effects on the pathogenesis of functional gastrointestinal disorders. In a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study, patients with FGID received freeze-dried blueberries or placebo. The blueberry treatment group showed improvements in GSRS scores, abdominal symptom relief, quality of life, and life functioning compared to the placebo group.

Summary: The severity of abdominal pain is associated with bloating severity in patients with functional bowel disorders, with differences in associations based on gender and specific phenotype. In female patients, severity of abdominal pain is negatively associated with age and positively associated with depression, constipation severity, and diarrhea severity. In male patients, severity of abdominal pain is associated with state anxiety, constipation severity, and diarrhea severity.

Summary: Disorders of the gut-brain interaction have a negative impact on quality of life and socio-economic burden. The understanding and guidelines for the treatment of functional abdominal pain disorders in children are lacking, making their management challenging. It is important to make an accurate diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome or functional abdominal pain-not otherwise specified in children with chronic abdominal pain to prevent unnecessary referrals and costs.

Summary: There are limited randomized controlled trials on managing pediatric IBS, with most intervention trials targeting changes to the gastrointestinal microbiome. Heterogeneity in study designs and outcomes make it difficult to formulate recommendations. Insufficient evidence exists to recommend therapeutic interventions in pediatric IBS, despite the association with dysbiosis. More prospective trials are needed.

Summary: Central sensitization was common in IBS and associated with GI symptom severity, but with stronger associations in chronic pain disorders and IBD. This suggests that other mechanisms may play a significant role in determining GI symptom severity in IBS.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the (cost) effectiveness of home-based guided hypnotherapy for children with functional abdominal pain (FAP) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in primary care. The participants, aged 7-17 years, will undergo a 12-month treatment, and the results will be analyzed on an intention-to-treat basis, including various secondary outcomes such as pain severity, frequency, and impact on daily functioning, anxiety and depression, etc. The findings will be disseminated through email, a dedicated website, peer-reviewed publications, and conference presentations.

Summary: This narrative review provides an update on current approaches for the treatment of pain, global symptoms, or relief in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The review evaluates medications, dietary interventions, fecal microbial transplantation (FMT), electrical approaches, and behavioral therapies. The evidence suggests only modest benefit in global IBS symptoms and pain relief. A future approach involving validated biomarkers could individualize treatment and improve outcomes.

Summary: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder characterized by altered gut-brain interaction and dysfunction of the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Prior studies have shown significant impairments in the health-related quality of life of patients with IBS. Resilience, as a psychosocial ability, plays a crucial role in promoting health and enhancing stress response.

Summary: Functional GI disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia, are common conditions that significantly impact quality of life and healthcare utilization. These disorders are caused by abnormalities in GI functioning. Treatment involves lifestyle and diet modifications, addressing psychological comorbidity, and medication to target underlying pathophysiology.
