Summary: The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) considers polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) as candidate prebiotics, although there is a lack of complete scientific evidence. Recent partial evidence shows that metabolites of PUFAs can have important health effects in the host, supporting the concept of the prebiotic action of PUFAs.

Summary: This study used the Mendelian randomization approach to explore the potential causal relationships between polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and osteoarthritis (OA), and found that higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids may reduce the risk of knee OA and hip OA. These results highlight the importance of maintaining optimal levels of PUFAs, especially omega-6 fatty acids, in individuals with a genetic predisposition to OA.

Summary: The study found that in Japanese youths, high intake of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids was associated with low levels of low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol, while high intake of saturated fatty acids was associated with high levels of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, indicating a close relationship between dietary fatty acid composition and cardiometabolic risk.

Summary: Using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, this study found potential causal relationships between levels of fatty acids (FA) and the risk of depression. Specifically, oleic acid (OA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) were identified as potential risk factors for depression, while adrenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were found to be protective. These findings emphasize the importance of further research to investigate the underlying mechanisms that mediate the association between these fatty acids and depression risk.

Summary: This study examined the effect of supplementation with ethyl esters of linseed oil on the fatty acid profile in blood serum, erythrocyte membranes, and hair sebum of healthy beagle dogs. The results showed that the supplementation decreased the content of saturated fatty acids and increased the level of beneficial unsaturated fatty acids, especially those from the omega-3 family.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Lactobacillus fermentum MCC2760 on intestinal bile acid uptake, hepatic bile acid synthesis, and enterohepatic bile acid transporters in hyperlipidemic rats. The results showed that MCC2760 supplementation could alleviate the abnormal changes in bile acid uptake, synthesis, and transport induced by a high-fat diet in rats.

Summary: Marine organisms are valuable sources of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are increasingly in demand for their health benefits. Seaweeds have a low lipid content, but their high PUFA fraction and low omega-6:omega-3 ratio make them an alternative source. Concentrated lipid extracts provide a practical method without significantly changing dietary habits. The extraction technology plays a key role in the production of seaweed extracts, and the choice of solvent and operational conditions can also extract other lipophilic components, resulting in a final product with interesting biological properties. Utilizing the remaining algal solids as a source of additional nutritional and bioactive compounds is essential for achieving a sustainable process.

Summary: This study found an inverse association between monounsaturated fatty acid intake and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk, and a direct association between total polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and HCC risk. Omega-6 PUFA intake was directly associated with HCC risk, while long-chain omega-3 PUFA intake was inversely associated with HCC risk. No significant association was observed for saturated fat and HCC risk.

Summary: The association between omega-3 fatty acids (n-3) and allergic diseases varies due to genetic variation. This study aimed to identify and validate genetic variants that modify the relationship between n-3 and childhood asthma or atopy. Results showed that certain SNPs in the DPP10 region interacted with n-3 levels in plasma or diet and were associated with atopy in early childhood and at age 6.
