Summary: This study examined the frequency of sitting by internal medicine residents during inpatient encounters and its association with patients' perceptions of other physician communication behaviors. The results showed that patients perceived that residents sit infrequently, but sitting was correlated with other positive communication behaviors.

Summary: This study aims to determine whether scores on two undergraduate admissions tests, BMAT and UCAT, can predict performance on the postgraduate MRCP examination. The results showed that some subtest scores of BMAT and UCAT had incremental predictive validity for the first two parts of the MRCP. Only aptitude and skills on BMAT and verbal reasoning on UCAT predicted passing PACES at the first attempt. These findings suggest that the abilities assessed by aptitude and skills and verbal reasoning may be crucial cognitive attributes for predicting future clinical performance.

Summary: This study examines the influence of Internal Medicine-Pediatrics programs and institutional health care transition (HCT) champions on trainee HCT knowledge, atti-tudes, and practices. The results show that trainees with an institutional Med-Peds program are more likely to identify an institutional HCT champion, resulting in higher knowledge scores and use of standardized HCT tools. Trainees without an institutional Med-Peds program experience more barriers to HCT education.

Summary: This qualitative study identified 7 distinct end-of-life priority domains for adolescents and young adults with cancer, including attention to physical symptoms, quality of life, psychosocial and spiritual care, communication and decision-making, relationships with clinicians, care and treatment, and independence. Some domains were unique or had distinct manifestations for this young population, suggesting the need for new indicators to better reflect patient-centered experiences.

Summary: Decision-making at extreme prematurity presents challenges and distress for parents and clinicians. Clinicians need to learn necessary skills for counseling and decision-making in these situations. Educational strategies that incorporate adult learning theory, multidisciplinary team simulation, and critical reflection show promising results in optimizing antenatal counseling and shared decision-making for families facing extreme prematurity.

Summary: This study evaluated the demographic trends of Internal Medicine (IM) faculty in the US, focusing on sex and race/ethnicity diversity. The findings revealed a predominance of White and male physicians in higher academic ranks, despite an increase in the representation of women and racial/ethnic minority IM faculty. The end of affirmative action threatens to perpetuate this trend, potentially impacting patient access and health outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to validate a surgical objective structured clinical examination (S-OSCE) for competency assessment based on the Royal College of Canada's Can-MEDS framework. The results show that the S-OSCE scores correlate strongly with other validated forms of assessment. Although the overall simulation is highly ranked, the fidelity of the cadaveric simulation may need improvement.

Summary: Non-technical skills (NTS) play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety in medical care. Focusing on assessing applicants' NTS during medical school admission may be a promising approach to ensure that future physicians possess high-level NTS. This study investigated the predictive validity of various selection tests and admission criteria for NTS performance in clinical emergency medicine training among medical students.

Summary: Research shows that transition activities provided by elementary schools have positive effects on children's outcomes. However, children from low-income households have less access to these activities compared to children from higher-income households. This research highlights the need to develop policies and practices that ensure transition supports are available to children from low-income families.

Summary: Racial inequities in palliative and end-of-life care have been well-documented but often overlooked due to a lack of consideration for the effects of race and everyday racism. Public Health Critical Race Praxis provides a new approach for researchers to address racial disparities by broadening research priorities and developing race-conscious interventions.

Summary: This study compares three natural language processing (NLP) modeling approaches for identifying documentation of goals-of-care discussions in electronic health records (EHR). The results show that NLP holds promise for identifying EHR-documented goals-of-care discussions, although the rarity of such content limits the performance. The study also identifies opportunities to optimize NLP modeling approaches.

Summary: This study presents a proof-of-principle approach for targeted variant detection in less than 1 hour using real-time DNA sequencers. By modifying existing protocols and optimizing diagnostic time-to-result, the researchers were able to confirm a hot-spot mutation in tumor tissue in about 52 minutes. They also explored rapid, targeted Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) and developed a bioinformatics tool called LAMPrey to process the sequenced LAMP product. Using LAMPrey, they demonstrated confirmation of a hot-spot mutation from tumor tissue in less than 30 minutes.

Summary: This study assessed physicians' perspectives on barriers and facilitators to the use of palliative care in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) patients. The results showed that PAH physicians are willing to implement a tailored approach to individual patients and collaborate effectively with palliative care clinicians. However, there are still limitations posed by health systems.
