The systematic position of the fossil species referred to Calliotropis is currently under debate due to the striking resemblance between these forms with their extant counterparts in general shell morphology and ornament pattern. We propose two temporal subgenera of Calliotropis: Calliotropis (Riselloidea) for Mesozoic species and Calliotropis (Calliotropis) for Cenozoic and Recent taxa. We also synonymize the families Eucyclidae and Calliotropidae, and redescribe the type genus of Eucylidae based on topotypic material of E. obeliscus from Normandy. We argue that the generic name Amberleya should be restricted to its type species Amberleya bathonica. For the species that were traditionally included in Amberleya, we propose the new genus Ambercyclus, with its type species Amberleya orbignyana. The present paper also provides descriptions of three Calliotropis species from the Early Jurassic marine deposits of Argentina. The occurrence of Calliotropis (Riselloidea) keideli n. sp., Calliotropis (Riselloidea) cf. C. (R.) keideli and Calliotropis (Riselloidea) sp. in the Jurassic of Chubut and Neuqu'en provinces represents a new record of the genus in Early Jurassic sediments of Argentina and South America. Moreover, two species of Ambercyclus n. gen., such as Ambercyclus espinosus and Ambercyclus? isabelensis n. sp., are described from the same deposits. Eucyclus, Amberleya, Ambercyclus, and Calliotropis are included into Eucyclidae, which we consider to be a family of Seguenzioidea.

Summary: The studied seep carbonates from Tsushima, Japan, represent the earliest evidence of hydrocarbon seepage in the Sea of Japan, forming within a pull-apart basin before major anticlines had formed. The carbonates are primarily composed of calcite, with significant admixture of ankerite at Kanoura, and isotopic analysis indicates methanogenic origin.

Early Jurassic Trigoniida (Bivalvia) from Argentina

Summary: This study describes 20 species of Trigoniida in the Early Jurassic shallow-marine paleoenvironments of the Andes, including some new species and genera, revealing their stratigraphic range and evolutionary relationships. These fossils indicate variation and evolution among species, as well as evidence of the rapid recovery of Trigoniida species in the Early Jurassic.

Late Cretaceous hydrothermal vent communities from the Troodos ophiolite, Cyprus: systematics and evolutionary significance

Andrzej Kaim, Crispin T. S. Little, William J. Kennedy, Ellen M. Mears, Louise M. Anderson

Summary: Modern hydrothermal vent communities are supported by microbial primary producers, with many dominant taxa emerging during the Cenozoic and Cretaceous periods. Fossil records of vent communities from these time periods are scarce. A discovery of Cretaceous vent communities in Cyprus reveals a diversity of new species in gastropods, with shared tube worms among vent sites in the western Neotethyan Ocean.

New age constraints on the Lower Jurassic Pliensbachian-Toarcian Boundary at Chacay Melehue (Neuquen Basin, Argentina)

Summary: The Pliensbachian-Toarcian boundary interval is characterized by a significant negative carbon-isotope excursion (CIE) in various marine and terrestrial archives, indicating a global disturbance to the carbon cycle. A new high-resolution organic-carbon isotope record from the Arroyo Chacay Melehue section in Argentina confirms the global significance of this anomaly. It also provides precise age assignments for the boundary and zonal boundaries using U-Pb zircon geochronology and a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) stratigraphic age model.

First Cretaceous cephalopod statoliths fill the gap between Jurassic and Cenozoic forms

Maciej K. Pindakiewicz, Krzysztof Hryniewicz, Katarzyna Janiszewska, Andrzej Kaim

Summary: This study reports the discovery of the first cephalopod statoliths from the Early Cretaceous, filling the gap in the fossil record between Jurassic and Cenozoic forms. The statoliths show a closer resemblance to the Recent Idiosepiidae and are suggested to belong to the basal decabrachians. The robustly developed spur in the Mesozoic statoliths may play a similar role to the wing in Cenozoic and Recent decabrachians. The abundance ratio of statoliths vs fish otoliths also supports a Cretaceous turnover in marine organisms.

The role of magmatism in hydrocarbon generation in sedimented rifts: A Nd isotope perspective from mid-Cretaceous methane-seep deposits of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin, Spain

Summary: Studies on the involvement of intrusive magmatism in hydrocarbon generation within sedimentary basins have gained momentum due to the increasing appraisal of their role in controlling global carbon cycle perturbations and the exploration potential of volcanic sedimentary basins. A multi-proxy geochemical study in the Basque-Cantabrian Basin during the middle Cretaceous revealed radiogenic Nd isotope signals in methane-seep deposits, indicating a connection between hydrocarbon seepage and igneous activity, and demonstrating the potential of Nd isotopes in tracing magmatic-influenced fluids in volcanic sedimentary basins.
