Little is known about treatment mechanisms underlying acceptance strategies. Acceptance is a strategy that is expected to increase pain tolerance more than distraction, while distraction should lead to lower pain intensity. The effect of cognitive restructuring on experimental pain has not yet been investigated. The present study aimed to explore differential short-term effects of acceptance, distraction, and cognitive restructuring on pain tolerance and intensity. Pain was induced in a sample of 109 female students using a thermode. We conducted analyses of covariance with instruction as the independent variable and posttest scores on pain variables as dependent variables, covarying for pretest scores. In addition, adherence to instructions and credibility of instructions were included as covariates. Acceptance led to a higher increase in pain tolerance than did cognitive restructuring of pain-related thoughts. No differences were detected between either acceptance and distraction or distraction and cognitive restructuring with respect to pain tolerance. Distraction led to lower pain intensity compared to acceptance. Cognitive restructuring did not differ from either acceptance or distraction with respect to pain intensity. As a short-term strategy, cognitive restructuring was not as useful as acceptance in increasing pain tolerance. Further studies should evaluate the preconditions under which different strategies are most effective. Perspective: This study demonstrated that acceptance was superior to cognitive restructuring in increasing tolerance for experimentally induced pain, but was inferior to distraction with respect to decreasing pain intensity. Knowledge about the types of strategies that are useful in targeting diverse pain-related outcome measures is important for efforts to refine the treatment of chronic pain. The Relationship Between Different Aspects of Theory of Mind and Symptom Clusters in Psychotic Disorders: Deconstructing Theory of Mind Into Cognitive, Affective, and Hyper Theory of Mind

Laura M. -L. Dorn, Nele Struck, Florian Bitsch, Irina Falkenberg, Tilo Kircher, Winfried Rief, Stephanie Mehl

Summary: Patients with psychosis showed more pronounced deficits in Cognitive and Affective ToM compared to non-clinical controls, while there were no significant differences in Hyper-ToM errors. Deficits in Cognitive ToM were associated with general delusions, while problems in Affective ToM were linked to negative and disorganized symptoms. Furthermore, there was no association between Hyper-ToM errors and any symptoms when controlling for educational level.

Feasibility of Present-Centered Therapy for Prolonged Grief Disorder: Results of a Pilot Study

Summary: Present-centered therapy (PCT) was originally developed as a comparator for the nonspecific effects of psychotherapy in treating posttraumatic stress disorder, but it has shown promising results in treating prolonged grief disorder (PGD) as well. Research demonstrates that PCT can significantly reduce PGD symptoms in adults, with treatment effects larger than those reported in traditional meta-analyses and good feasibility in outpatient settings.

Summary: This study investigated the naturalistic effectiveness of routine inpatient treatment for patients with OCD and identified predictors of treatment outcome. Results indicate that, in addition to established predictors, social support and washing compulsions were identified as important positive predictors. Specific predictor profiles for changes in obsessions and compulsions were discussed.

Summary: A doctor's patient-centered communication style positively influences participants' intention to take medication, but does not directly affect their behavioral outcomes. Future studies should further explore the role of communication in populations taking medication long-term.

Same Name, Same Content? Evaluation of DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 Prolonged Grief Criteria

Summary: This study investigated the concordance between the diagnostic criteria for prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in DSM-5-TR and ICD-11. The results showed significant differences in diagnostic rates, mainly due to the time criterion and the presentation of core symptoms. With the potential increase in PGD prevalence rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, practitioners should be cautious about the diagnostic rule used and consider a stepped-care approach if there is uncertainty about the presence of full-blown PGD.

Does subjective social status affect pain thresholds? - an experimental examination

Marie Neubert, Philipp Suessenbach, Winfried Rief, Frank Euteneuer

Summary: Previous research on the relationship between social status and pain has produced inconsistent findings. This study aimed to explore the causal relationship between perceived social status and pain thresholds through experimental manipulation. Fifty-one female undergraduates were assigned to either a low or high-status condition. Participants' pain thresholds were measured before and after manipulating their perception of social status. The results showed that participants in the low-status condition reported increased pain thresholds after the manipulation, while those in the high-status condition reported decreased pain thresholds (beta = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.002 to 0.432; p < .05). These findings suggest that perceived social status may have a causal effect on pain thresholds.

Open-Label Placebo Treatment: Outcome Expectations and General Acceptance in the Lay Population

Summary: This study compared the general acceptance and outcome expectations of open-label placebos (OLPs) and deceptive placebos (DPs) among participants. The findings showed that participants had higher outcome expectations towards DPs and rated the application of DPs as more acceptable than OLPs. This result may be explained by the indirect effects of treatment expectations.

Summary: This study found that trauma-focused psychotherapy in routine clinical care has medium to large effects on PTSD inpatients, and a combined predictor model with sociodemographic, clinical, and psychometric variables can help predict treatment outcomes. Factors such as psychoticism, total number of diagnoses, and bronchial asthma consistently showed a stable negative predictive relationship to treatment outcome.
