We report synthesis and investigation of doubly trimethylene-bridged tetrabenzyl-p-phenylenediamine 1(Bz) in its singly and doubly charged redox states. The singly oxidized monoradical cation, which is a mixed-valence (MV) with directly interacting charge-bearing units, shows broad and solvent-sensitive intervalence bands consistent with class II compounds according to the Robin Day classification. The doubly oxidized diradical dication of 1(Bz) exists in the spin-paired singlet state with thermally accessible triplet state. It has similar conformations as the other dimeric p-phenylenediamines, such as derivatives l(Me) and 1(Et), in both the solid-state and solution phases. The successful isolation of the single-crystalline 1(Bz)(2+) diradical dications with two different in nature counteranions, relatively highly coordinating SbF6- and weakly coordinating carborane [undecamethylcarborane HCB11Me11-(CB-)] reveals the distinct effect of the nature of counterions on the structural features of diradical dication. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of 1(Bz) in dichloromethane reveal separation of the first and second oxidation potential by 0.12 V (2.8 kcal/mol), indicating relatively stable mixed-valence state in the dichloromethane, whereas in the acetonitrile both the first and second oxidation potentials overlap into one unresolved redox peak with minimal separation.

Quasi-1D Aligned Nanostructures for Solar-Driven Water Splitting Applications: Challenges, Promises, and Perspectives

Summary: Solar energy conversion, particularly through photoelectrochemical water splitting, is a promising approach to produce clean hydrogen energy. Semiconductors, such as TiO2 and ZnO, play a crucial role in absorbing solar radiation to generate electron-hole pairs for water splitting. Aligned nanoarrays (NAs) in various forms have shown great potential as photoactive materials for PEC water splitting, with a focus on their synthesis, characterizations, and performance compared to other morphologies.

Summary: Through first-principles DFT simulations, the study found that the functionalization of BNNS with polypyrrole (PP) stabilized the HOMO-LUMO energy states, significantly reducing the energy gap by 45% and improving electronic properties and cell reaction kinetics. The predicted improvement in cell voltage after functionalization with PP, especially for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries, highlights the influence of metal ion size and charge on energy efficiency.

Degradation Kinetics and Mechanism of Polychloromethanes Reduction at Co-MoS2/Graphite Felt Electrode

Summary: This study investigated the electrochemical dechlorination of different polychloromethanes using a Co-MoS2 graphite felt cathode, with optimized parameters such as current density, pH, and sample concentration. The Co-MoS2 graphite felt electrode exhibited excellent catalytic activity towards the reduction of chlorinated compounds with high selectivity towards higher-order organochlorides. The dechlorination rates followed a first-order kinetic model, with estimated apparent rate constants showing dechlorination in the sequence CH2Cl2 < CHCl3 < CCl4.

Photoluminescent Carbon Nanodots Integrated Polymeric Materials in One Step from Molecular Precursors

Almaz S. Jalilov

Summary: The PL origin of CNDs is often limited by the disconnect between their structural complexity in solid-state and the PL properties in dispersed solution phase. By synthesizing photoluminescent polymeric materials through direct polyesterification and comparing them with CNDs prepared by pyrolysis of CA, it was found that the polymeric materials exhibit distinct structural and photophysical properties. Additionally, it is proposed that intermediate molecular fluorophores may be trapped along with CNDs in the polymer matrix.

Summary: In this study, carbon materials prepared from a low-cost petroleum waste carbon precursor activated at 400 degrees C using KOH, MgO, and Ca(OH)(2) were reported. Low-temperature activated carbons were prepared as electrode materials using commercial ink as a binder. The electrochemical performance of the electrodes was studied using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge in a 3-electrode system with 1 M potassium nitrate (KNO3) as electrolyte, and the supercapacitive performance was evaluated in a potential window range of 0.0-1.0 V. The best-performance activated carbon derived from vacuum residue exhibited a specific surface area of 1250.6 m(2)/g and a specific capacitance of 91.91 F/g.
