Summary: In this study, a method for direct insertion of an intramolecular nitrogen atom into an aromatic C-C bond was described. Carbamoyl azides were activated by a Rh catalyst and inserted directly into the C-C bond of an arene ring to produce fused azepine products. The use of a paddlewheel dirhodium complex effectively inhibited the undesired C-H insertion. Density functional theory calculations were used to elucidate the reaction mechanism and chemoselectivity of the Rh-catalyzed reactions. The resulting fused azepine products are highly stable and can be further diversified.

Summary: 1-Acryloyl-2-cyanoindoles were discovered to be novel and efficient scaffolds in visible-light-induced persulfate-promoted cascade cyclization reactions. With this transition-metal-free photocatalytic procedure, various sulfonated/thiocyanated pyrrolo[1,2-a]indolediones were synthesized from 1-acryloyl-2-cyanoindoles with sulfonyl hydrazides/NH4SCN at room temperature under mild reaction conditions.

Summary: An efficient method for constructing 1,2,3-triarylindoles through one-pot multicomponent reactions using calcium carbide, 3mol of iodoarenes, and aromatic amines as starting materials was described. This method allows for the simultaneous formation of five bonds in one step, resulting in a series of target products. The main advantages of this protocol include the use of a convenient alkyne source, a wide scope of substrates, and a simple workup procedure. The method can also be scaled up to gram scale.

Summary: Catalytic ring expansion is a powerful method for the synthesis of complex molecules. In this study, a catalytic ring-expanding reaction of indoles was developed using cationic palladium(II) complexes. This reaction provides a concise access to a seven-membered azaheterocycle. The reaction is enabled by a bifunctional quinolinyl group and is compatible with a wide range of functional groups. It simplifies the synthesis of challenging dibenzoazepine analogues.

Summary: In this study, a new method for the oxidative cleavage of C(2)=C(3)/C(2)-N bonds of indoles using electrochemistry as the driving force is reported. Compared to previous strategies, this method avoids the use of heavy metals or stoichiometric chemical oxidants, and features metal-free conditions, air as the oxidant, and easy scalability.

Summary: A Pd-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H functionalization reaction assisted by a calix[4]arene ligand has been developed for the direct beta-C-H arylation of tertiary aliphatic aldehydes. This strategy shows good functional group compatibility and C-H bond site-selectivity. Mechanistic studies suggest that both synergistic effect and cationic-pi supramolecular interaction between the calixarene cavity and transition-metal catalytic center may play important roles in this catalytic cycle. This complementary method is expected to have applications in organic and medical chemistry.

Summary: A Rh(iii)-catalyzed tandem reaction using 5-methylene-1,3-dioxan-2-one as an efficient allyl source has been developed for the synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyrimido[1,6-a]indol-1(2H)-ones, showing good substrate scope and moderate to excellent yields. The Rh(iii) catalyst plays a dual role in C-H activation and N-alkylation annulation process in the mechanism studies.

Summary: An efficient palladium-copper catalyzed regioselective C-C bond cleavage/C-H bond activation/C-C bond reformation reaction was developed to synthesize 9,9-diaryl-xanthenes. A variety of 9,9-diaryl-xanthenes were synthesized in moderate to good yields by decarboxylation/de-cycloalkanonylative coupling reactions between 9H-xanthene-9-carboxylic acid/2-(9H-xanthen-9-yl)-cycloketones and aromatics bearing electron-donating functional groups.

Summary: An efficient cascade reaction of cyclobutanones with chalcones has been developed, using inexpensive potassium tert-butoxide as a promoter. It enables the synthesis of densely substituted cyclohex-3-ene-carboxylic acids in high yields and with high diastereoselectivities, which are difficult to prepare using conventional methods. The method offers the advantages of transition-metal-free conditions, readily available starting materials, wide scope, and high atom economy.

Summary: Here, we report a novel selective annulation reaction using a Rh-catalyst, which allows the synthesis of pyranoindole cyclic motifs by reacting indolyl oxopropanenitrile with hydroxy-alkynoates. The reaction takes advantage of the unique reactivity of enol oxygen, resulting in regio- and stereoselective assembly of the desired compounds through a five-membered oxy-rodacycle formed via C-H activation guided by enolic- and propargyloxy dual coordination.
