Summary: While surgical therapy for head and neck cancer (HNC) has improved, the focus should also be on supportive pre and aftercare. Nutritional management is challenging due to complications and reduced oral intake, but enteral nutrition is preferred. However, there is a lack of studies, recommendations, and guidelines for HNC patients' nutritional management. This narrative review highlights the need for future research and an algorithm for better nutritional care.

Summary: Nutritional deficiencies caused by radiotherapy are important but understudied in cancer patients, especially in head and neck cancer patients where the incidence is high. Malnutrition, sarcopenia, and cachexia are associated with poorer disease prognosis, higher mortality, and reduced quality of life.

Summary: Each cow in a group has different nutritional requirements, and the common dairy farm management setup cannot accurately meet the individual needs of each cow, resulting in overfeeding and underfeeding. Nutritional grouping is a management strategy that aims to allocate cows based on their nutritional requirements, facilitating the formulation of accurate diets for the group. The availability of large data streams on dairy farms facilitates the implementation of nutritional grouping.

Summary: This review aims to summarize the dose-volume constraints in carbon ion radiotherapy for head-and-neck cancer based on the Japanese models for relative biological effectiveness (RBE). The study found dose-volume constraints for 17 organs at risk (OARs), including the brainstem, ocular structures, masticatory muscles, and skin. Various treatment planning strategies for reducing the dose to OARs were also presented.

Summary: Overall, there is a lack of robust evidence on adherence to oral nutritional interventions in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Future studies should evaluate the impact of oral nutritional interventions in this population and measure adherence to the intervention. Early recognition of non-adherence and contributing factors could lead to intensified nutritional support and improved health outcomes.

Summary: Rhinosinusitis and smell alterations are common side effects during and after radiotherapy and chemotherapy for head and neck cancer. It is important to establish the severity of these side effects in order to support patients and improve their quality of life.

Summary: Golf is a skill-based sport where the role of nutrition in improving performance has received little attention. However, nutrition is crucial for fueling, hydration, and recovery in golf. Furthermore, the impact of travel and dietary supplements on golf performance should be considered. Future research is needed to explore nutrition strategies for golf performance.

Summary: The nutritional status of cancer patients is closely related to their survival and surgical outcomes. This study investigated the association between preoperative prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and post-operative clinical outcomes in head and neck cancer patients. The results showed that patients with a high PNI had a lower incidence of overall complications, medical complications, and pulmonary complications, but no significant difference in surgical complications. The high PNI group also had a lower risk of mortality. These findings suggest that the PNI score can serve as an independent predictor of postoperative complications in head and neck cancer patients undergoing surgical resection. Preoperative testing and evaluation of PNI may help identify patients at low PNI and high-risk for postoperative surveillance.

Summary: Studies have identified various factors associated with psychological distress in couples facing Head and Neck Cancer, including disease burden, reduced social contact, perception of reduced relationship quality, and less adaptive coping. While the effect sizes varied considerably, overall the studies had good methodological quality but could be improved by minimizing non-response bias and fully reporting relational characteristics.

Summary: This systematic review examines telemedicine-based interventions for head and neck cancer patients and finds that this model has the potential for cost-effectiveness and clinical utility in rehabilitation. However, the current literature on this topic is limited and more research is needed to determine its role in management.

Summary: Oral-functioning impairment can negatively affect the quality of life of head and neck cancer patients after radiotherapy. This scoping review proposes a definition for oral functioning in these patients and identifies questionnaires for assessing patient-reported oral functioning. The common denominators for oral functioning were found to be chewing, speaking, and swallowing. Based on the included studies, the VHNSS 2.0 questionnaire is recommended for assessing oral functioning in these patients.

Summary: Malnutrition is a common issue in patients with head and neck cancer, often due to swallowing difficulties and oral complications caused by both the tumor and oncological treatments. Patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer differ from those without HPV, highlighting the importance of nutritional support for improving treatment outcomes and quality of life in this population.

Summary: Pediatric orbital floor fractures are rare and usually treated conservatively, but surgery is required in cases of inferior rectus entrapment, enophthalmos, and diplopia. Autogenous bone graft is an attractive option, but donor site immaturity poses a challenge for surgeons. Prosthetic materials can migrate with growth and often require a second surgery.
