Fluorescence-Guided Bone Resection in Bisphosphonate-Associated Osteonecrosis of the Jaws

Purpose: To date, the therapy of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of die jaws (BONJ) has been hampered by the lack of imaging modalities that enable the extent of necrosis to be visualized. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of tetracycline fluorescence guided bone resection in the surgical management of BONJ. Patients and Methods: Following a 10-day preoperative administration of doxycycline in patients suffering from BONJ, sufficient doxycycline is incorporated into viable bone to be visualized with a certified medical lamp emitting exciting light at 400 to 460 nm. Results: Viable and necrotic bone can be discriminated intraoperatively in a routine and reproducible manner by doxycycline bone fluorescence. Conclusion: in the therapy of BONJ, conservative concepts arc to be favored. The fact that necrotic bone can now be selectively resected signifies an improvement of the conservative surgical therapy of BONJ. (C) 2009 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

Patient-specific miniplates versus patient-specific reconstruction plate: A biomechanical comparison with 3D-printed plates in mandibular reconstruction

Summary: This study aimed to examine whether patient-specific 3D-printed miniplates provide increased interosteotomy movement (IOM) and lower stiffness compared to reconstruction plates. The findings showed that miniplate fixation resulted in higher IOM in the distal gap, while there was no significant difference between the groups in the mesial gap. Surgeons should evaluate the primary use of 3D-printed miniplates in mandibular reconstruction due to advantages of intraoral plate removal and safe osteosynthesis.

The RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method was used to provide recommendations based on current scientific evidence and expert opinion. A set of 108 clinical scenarios were developed and a consensus on the appropriateness of ACLRev was established.

The awareness of injury prevention programmes is insufficient among French- and German-speaking sports medicine communities in Europe

Summary: This study evaluated the current state of sports injury prevention perception, knowledge and practice among sports medicine professionals in Western Europe. A total of 766 participants completed a web-based questionnaire, and the results showed that while the importance of injury prevention was rated high, only 54% were aware of specific injury prevention programs. The French-speaking world showed lower levels of knowledge and familiarity with prevention programs compared to their German-speaking counterparts. Barriers to injury prevention included insufficient expertise, lack of support from sports organizations, and lack of time. The study highlights the need to raise awareness about sports injury prevention.

Biological intra-articular augmentation for osteotomy in knee osteoarthritis: strategies and results A systematic review of the literature from the ESSKA Orthobiologics Initiative

Summary: This study aimed to assess the evidence supporting the use of augmentation strategies in osteotomies for knees with osteoarthritis. The study found that cartilage surgical procedures combined with osteotomies did not provide pain relief and functional recovery, while injective orthobiologic options showed promising clinical benefits. However, the quality of the available literature is limited and further research is needed to optimize the use of biologic intra-articular osteotomy augmentation.

The results showed that these therapies could slow down the progression of cartilage damage and have positive effects at macroscopic, histological, and immunohistochemical levels.

The guidelines were based on an analysis of peer-reviewed literature and included statements reflecting the best available scientific evidence for each topic. In addition, the group members rated the statements to identify gaps between literature and clinical practice.

Patient-specific 3D-printed mini-versus reconstruction plates for free flap fixation at the mandible: Retrospective study of clinical outcomes and complication rates

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes and complication rates of patient-specific 3D-printed miniplates and reconstruction plates for mandibular reconstruction. The results showed that the use of miniplates reduced the occurrence of fistula and non-union compared to reconstruction plates, and the procedures were performed more easily. In general, patient-specific 3D-printed miniplates have lower complication rates in immediate mandibular reconstruction.

Epidemiology of Acute and Overuse Injuries in Underwater Rugby

Summary: This study investigated the injury occurrence in underwater rugby athletes, and found that 3 in 4 athletes experienced at least 1 acute injury, and 2 in 5 athletes experienced at least 1 overuse injury. The most common injury locations were hand/finger, head/ear, wrist, and spine.

What makes an orthopaedic paper highly citable? A bibliometric analysis of top orthopeadic journals with 10-year follow up

Summary: This study aims to examine the number of citations of a series of papers from top ranked orthopaedic journals over a 10-year observation period, in order to identify factors that lead to high citation rates. The Web of Science database was used to analyze and compare the papers, and factors such as the number of authors, keywords, and references were found to significantly correlate with citation frequency (p < 0.001).

Summary: This study aimed to compare dedicated MRI with targeted fluoroscopic guided symphyseal contrast agent injection for the assessment of symphyseal cleft signs and radiographic pelvic ring instability in athletic men with groin pain. The results showed that MRI was more accurate in diagnosing symphyseal cleft injuries and played an important role in the development of anterior pelvic ring instability.
