Objectives: To assess the relationship between the CHS frailty criteria (Fried et al., 2001) and cognitive performance. Design: Cross sectional and population-based. Setting: Ermelino Matarazzo, a poor sub district of the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Participants: 384 community dwelling older adults, 65 and older. Measurements: Assessment of the CHS frailty criteria, the Brief Cognitive Screening Battery (memorization of 10 black and white pictures, verbal fluency animal category, and the Clock Drawing Test) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Results: Frail older adults performed significantly lower than non-frail and pre frail elderly in most cognitive variables. Grip strength and age were associated to MMSE performance, age was associated to delayed memory recall, gait speed was associated to verbal fluency and CDT performance, and education was associated to CDT performance. Conclusion: Being frail may be associated with cognitive decline, thus, gerontological assessments and interventions should consider that these forms of vulnerability may occur simultaneously.

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease in Down Syndrome and Its Impact on Caregiver Distress

Luciana Mascarenhas Fonseca, Guilherme Prado Mattar, Glenda Guerra Haddad, Ekaterina Burduli, Sterling M. McPherson, Laura Maria de Figueiredo Ferreira Guilhoto, Monica Sanches Yassuda, Geraldo Filho Busatto, Cassio Machado de Campos Bottino, Marcelo Queiroz Hoexter, Naomi Sage Chaytor

Summary: Research investigated neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and caregiver distress in adults with Down syndrome (DS), finding that NPS are common and severe in DS and AD patients, contributing to caregiver distress. Symptoms of apathy, nighttime behavior disturbances, and appetite abnormalities had the greatest impact on caregiver distress.

Number of ideas in spontaneous speech predicts cognitive impairment and frailty in community-dwelling older adults nine years later

Tulia Fernanda Meira Garcia, Catherine Nicol de Aravena Vallero, Daniela de Assumpcao, Ivan Aprahamian, Yassuda Monica Sanches, Flavia Silva Arbex Borim, Anita Liberalesso Neri

Summary: The study found that individuals with a higher number of ideas in their spontaneous speech at baseline had a lower chance of cognitive impairment and frailty nine years later. The number of words in speech did not show a significant impact on the development of cognitive impairment and frailty, suggesting that the number of ideas in spontaneous speech may serve as a predictor for mental and physical health outcomes in older individuals after a nine-year period.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the key differences in discriminative networks and their main nodes between superagers and cognitively average elderly controls. The key networks that differentiated superagers and elderly controls were the default mode, salience, and language networks. Potential imaging biomarkers for predicting superagers can be provided by the functional connectivity in these networks. The 7T field holds promise for accurately detecting the functional connectivity patterns in superagers.

Influence of multimorbidity patterns on the activities in the day-to-day lives ofthe elderly: nine-year follow-up ofthe Fibra Study

Diego Salvador Muniz da Silva, Marcela Fernandes Silva, Daniela de Assumpcao, Priscila Maria Stolses Bergamo Francisco, Anita Liberalesso Neri, Monica Sanches Yassuda, Flavia Silva Arbex Borim

Summary: The study assessed the impact of multimorbidity and its effects on the day-to-day activities of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Data from the FIBRA Study were used, and activities of daily living (ADL) were evaluated using Katz's index. Different patterns of chronic diseases were classified, including multimorbidity, cardio-pulmonary, vascular-metabolic, and mental-musculoskeletal. Analysis using chi-square test and Poisson regression revealed that elderly individuals with multimorbidity and specific disease patterns had a higher risk of functional decline in ADL over a nine-year period.

Relationship between chronic pain , depressive symptoms, and functional disability in community-dwelling older adults: mediating role of frailty

Flavia Silva Arbex Borim, Daniela de Assumpcao, Monica Sanches Yassuda, Henrique Trajano de Moraes Costa, Samila Sathler Tavares Batistoni, Anita Liberalesso Neri, Richard C. Oude Voshaar, Ivan Aprahamian

Summary: This study examined the direct and indirect effects of chronic pain, depressive symptoms, frailty components, and functional disability in older adults living in the community through a pathway analysis. The results showed that there was a direct association between chronic pain and depressive symptoms, and both were associated with frailty. The number of frailty components and depressive symptoms were directly associated with functional disability. Frailty had an indirect effect on the association between chronic pain, depressive symptoms, and functional disability.

Summary: An exploratory study on the perception of social robots among older people in Brazil, where technological access is limited, showed that most participants were receptive to the idea of having a social robot assist them in activities or even act as a companion occasionally. However, the limitation of the robot not being able to communicate in Portuguese was noted.

Effects of social robots on depressive symptoms in older adults: a scoping review

Bruno Sanchez de Araujo, Marcelo Fantinato, Sarajane Marques Peres, Ruth Caldeira de Melo, Samila Sathler Tavares Batistoni, Meire Cachioni, Patrick C. K. Hung

Summary: Despite the potential for using social robots in mental health interventions, in the scenario of smart cities, this review showed that their usefulness and effects in improving depressive symptoms in older adults have low internal and external validity. Future studies should consider factors such as planning the intervention based on well-established supported therapies, characteristics and needs of the subjects, and the context in which the subjects are inserted.
