Summary: Frailty is a physiological vulnerability that occurs across multiple systems during adulthood and can impact cognitive traits like processing speed. This study examined the association between frailty and processing speed before midlife, finding that higher frailty was associated with poorer performance, especially with increasing age.

Summary: Frailty is associated with cognitive expression of neuropsychological deficits in older adults, as found in the analysis of data from three large cohort studies. Among participants with higher frailty levels, there was a stronger negative association between neuropsychological deficits and cognitive performance.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between social cognitive difficulties and social frailty, as well as the correlation between social frailty and psychological well-being. The findings show that social cognitive difficulties and social behavior can predict increased social frailty, with social behavior being the only significant predictor. Furthermore, social frailty is also associated with various aspects of psychological well-being, with significant effects on demoralization, resilience, and life satisfaction even after adjusting for covariates.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of physical exercise on the cognition of community-dwelling older adults with frailty syndrome through six randomized clinical trials. The data from the meta analysis showed that physical exercise can improve both global cognition and mental flexibility in this population. The interventions with physical exercise were found to promote benefits in cognitive function for older adults with frailty syndrome.

Summary: This study developed a questionnaire-based Active Mobility Index (AMI) to assess going-out behavior with physical and social activity among older adults. The findings showed that lower AMI scores were associated with more depressive symptoms, frailty, cognitive impairment, and a higher risk of incident disability.

Summary: This study explores the associations among cognition, frailty, and obesity in older adults. The findings suggest that cognition may worsen in community-dwelling older adults with obesity, particularly with greater truncal fat mass. Frailty appears to be an important predictor of cognitive performance in this population.

Summary: The frailty index (FI) independently predicted mortality, with the highest impact in individuals with endocrine, lung, or heart diseases. Both multimorbidity and specific chronic disease clusters were associated with an accelerated increase in frailty over time, highlighting the importance of initiating frailty prevention in middle age.

Summary: The study found that individuals with a higher number of ideas in their spontaneous speech at baseline had a lower chance of cognitive impairment and frailty nine years later. The number of words in speech did not show a significant impact on the development of cognitive impairment and frailty, suggesting that the number of ideas in spontaneous speech may serve as a predictor for mental and physical health outcomes in older individuals after a nine-year period.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the key differences in discriminative networks and their main nodes between superagers and cognitively average elderly controls. The key networks that differentiated superagers and elderly controls were the default mode, salience, and language networks. Potential imaging biomarkers for predicting superagers can be provided by the functional connectivity in these networks. The 7T field holds promise for accurately detecting the functional connectivity patterns in superagers.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of multimorbidity and its effects on the day-to-day activities of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Data from the FIBRA Study were used, and activities of daily living (ADL) were evaluated using Katz's index. Different patterns of chronic diseases were classified, including multimorbidity, cardio-pulmonary, vascular-metabolic, and mental-musculoskeletal. Analysis using chi-square test and Poisson regression revealed that elderly individuals with multimorbidity and specific disease patterns had a higher risk of functional decline in ADL over a nine-year period.

Summary: This study examined the direct and indirect effects of chronic pain, depressive symptoms, frailty components, and functional disability in older adults living in the community through a pathway analysis. The results showed that there was a direct association between chronic pain and depressive symptoms, and both were associated with frailty. The number of frailty components and depressive symptoms were directly associated with functional disability. Frailty had an indirect effect on the association between chronic pain, depressive symptoms, and functional disability.

Summary: An exploratory study on the perception of social robots among older people in Brazil, where technological access is limited, showed that most participants were receptive to the idea of having a social robot assist them in activities or even act as a companion occasionally. However, the limitation of the robot not being able to communicate in Portuguese was noted.

Summary: Despite the potential for using social robots in mental health interventions, in the scenario of smart cities, this review showed that their usefulness and effects in improving depressive symptoms in older adults have low internal and external validity. Future studies should consider factors such as planning the intervention based on well-established supported therapies, characteristics and needs of the subjects, and the context in which the subjects are inserted.
