Summary: The study examined the relative validity of food intake measured by the Meal-based Diet History Questionnaire (MDHQ). Despite the limited ability to estimate food group intakes on an individual level, MDHQ showed satisfactory performance in estimating median intake and ranking individuals according to consumption.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of cumulative socioeconomic vulnerabilities on children's food intake. The findings revealed that children with higher socioeconomic vulnerability scores were less likely to consume water, fresh fruit, and vegetables, but more likely to consume canned fruit, fruit juice, soft drinks, and salty snacks/fast food. This suggests an unhealthy dietary pattern among European children, with a focus needed on families with cumulative socioeconomic vulnerabilities.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the Meal-based Diet History Questionnaire (MDHQ) in estimating nutrient intake. The study found that there were no significant differences in estimates between the online MDHQ and the weighed dietary record (DR) for a certain number of nutrients. The correlation coefficients between the online MDHQ and DR were moderate, indicating an acceptable ability to rank individuals based on nutrient intakes.

Summary: This study examines the association between watermelon intake and nutrient intake and diet quality using a large, nationally representative sample. The results show that watermelon consumers have higher total diet quality and intake of nutrients such as dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium, vitamin A, lycopene, and other carotenoids, while having lower intake of added sugars and total saturated fatty acids.

Summary: Low quality diet during pregnancy and postpartum can lead to negative health outcomes for both mothers and infants. This study examined the association between intake of ultra-processed foods and diet quality during pregnancy and postpartum. The findings suggest that reducing intake of ultra-processed foods can improve adherence to dietary guidelines in pregnant and postpartum populations.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between participation in leisure-time organised physical activity (LTOPA) and dietary intake in Swedish adolescents. The study found that LTOPA was associated with lower sugar-sweetened beverages intake among boys and girls, higher fruit intake among boys, and lower vegetable intake among girls. However, LTOPA was unrelated to overall healthy eating index and candy intake.

Summary: The global utilization of insect protein in poultry feed is increasing. However, there is limited research on the nutritional quality of meat from hens fed a diet with black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) as a substitute for fishmeal (FM). Our results show that substituting feed did not affect the composition of the meat products. Omega 3 fatty acids were not affected, while total monounsaturated fatty acids increased with increasing dietary inclusion of BSFLM. Lysine, methionine, and isoleucine were significantly higher in insect-fed hen meat products. Zinc and B vitamins, except for B1, were also enhanced in the meat from hens fed a BSFLM diet. Therefore, replacing up to 75% of FM with BSFLM did not significantly impact the meat quality. Meat from hens fed a BSFLM diet could be a promising and novel ingredient for manufacturing nutritious food products with a healthy appeal for consumers.

Summary: A reliable assessment of diet quality is crucial for individuals to make better dietary choices. This study examined the accuracy of self-perceived diet quality and its correlation with actual diet quality as measured by validated nutrient intake indexes. The findings showed that higher self-perceived diet quality was associated with more optimal nutrient intake.

Summary: The impacts of the current global food system are already visible in the environment and in the health of the population. Promoting sustainable diets is crucial to counter the negative consequences. The healthcare system has the potential to educate patients and guide their diets towards sustainability. Evidence suggests that health professionals can drive a paradigm shift in food-health environments, though their role and impact are currently underestimated within healthcare systems.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate factors associated with changes in food-preparation practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan and its associations to food-group intake. The results showed that participants who increased time and effort for food preparation were younger, partially working remotely, experiencing reduced household income due to COVID-19, but highly concerned the importance of diet. On the other hand, participants whose household income decreased, household economic status worsened, as well as those whose importance of diet deteriorated due to COVID-19 were more likely to decrease time and effort for cooking.

Summary: Evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic and associated measures have negatively impacted the psychological wellbeing of school-aged children, leading to sudden stress, boredom, and loneliness. The need for resilience building and positive coping strategies for children to thrive in future health crises or disasters is emphasized.
