Among modifiable lifestyle factor's, diet may affect cognitive health. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations may exist between dietary exposures [e.g., caffeine (mg/d), alcohol (g/d), and nutrient adequacy] and cognitive performance and change over time. This was a prospective cohort study, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (n = 628-1305 persons depending on the cognitive outcome; similar to 2 visits/person). Outcomes included 10 cognitive scores, spanning various domains of cognition. Caffeine and alcohol intakes and a nutrient adequacy score (NAS) were estimated from 7-d food diaries. Among key findings, caffeine intake was associated with better baseline global cognition among participants with a baseline age (Age(base)) of y. A higher NAS was associated with better baseline global cognition performance (overall, women, Age(base) <70 y), better baseline verbal memory (immediate and delayed recall, Age(base) >= 70 y), and slower rate of decline or faster improvement in the attention domain (women). For an Age(base) of <70 y, alcohol consumption was associated with slower improvement on letter fluency and global cognition over time. Conversely, for an Age(base) of >= 70y and among women, alcohol intake was related to better baseline attention and working memory. In sum, patterns of diet and cognition associations indicate stratum-specific associations by sex and baseline age. The general observed trend was that of putative beneficial effects of caffeine intake and nutrient adequacy on domains of global cognition, verbal memory, and attention, and mixed effects of alcohol on domains of letter fluency, attention, and working memory. Further longitudinal studies conducted on larger samples of adults are needed to determine whether dietary factors individually or in combination are modifiers of cognitive trajectories among adults.

Adherence to Mediterranean Diet and Depressive Symptomatology Among Boston Area Puerto Ricans

Neha Sahasrabudhe, Jong Soo Lee, Xiyuan Zhang, Tammy Scott, Laura Punnett, Katherine L. Tucker, Natalia Palacios

Summary: Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with lower depressive symptoms, including among Latino populations such as Puerto Ricans in mainland U.S. This study found that adherence to the Mediterranean diet was negatively associated with self-reported depressive symptoms among Puerto Rican adults in the Boston area.

Health Literacy, Numeracy, and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Accordance Among Hypertensive Adults

Sophia P. Lou, Dingfen Han, Marie F. Kuczmarski, Michele K. Evans, Alan B. Zonderman, Deidra C. Crews

Summary: Higher health literacy (HL) and health numeracy (HN) are associated with greater accordance to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet among hypertensive adults. In the sample, 32.5% had limited HL and 14.5% had limited HN. HL was positively correlated with DASH total score in the overall sample, while the relationship between HN and DASH was statistically significant only among White participants. Educational attainment explained both findings.

Consumption of Foods Away from Home Is Associated with Lower Diet Quality Among Adults Living in Puerto Rico

Summary: This study examined the association between frequency and type of consuming foods away from home (FAFH) and diet quality in adults in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The results showed that frequent FAFH consumption was associated with lower diet quality and lower adherence to dietary recommendations. Future studies should explore strategies to improve diet quality, such as prioritizing healthy at-home meals and improving the quality of commercial FAFH.

Plasma neurofilament light as blood marker for poor brain white matter integrity among middle-aged urban adults

Summary: The link between plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) and dementia may be mediated through white matter integrity (WMI). This study found that higher plasma NfL levels were associated with increased global and frontal white matter trace (TR) in middle-aged adults, particularly among males and White individuals. Additionally, African American adults showed a relationship between NfL and greater left temporal lobe TR.

GDF15 and its association with cognitive performance over time in a longitudinal study of middle-aged urban adults

May A. Beydoun, Nicole Noren Hooten, Jordan Weiss, Hind A. Beydoun, Michael Georgescu, David W. Freeman, Michele K. Evans, Alan B. Zonderman

Summary: Serum GDF15 levels are correlated with multiple neurodegenerative diseases. This study examined the association between initial serum GDF15 concentrations and cognitive performance over time in a diverse sample of middle-aged adults. The results showed cross-sectional associations between GDF15 and cognitive performance, but GDF15 did not predict changes in cognitive performance over a 4-year follow-up period. More longitudinal studies are needed to assess the clinical utility of GDF15 as a biomarker for early cognitive defects.

Microbial metabolites in chronic heart failure and its common comorbidities

Sha Hua, Bomin Lv, Zeping Qiu, Zhuojin Li, Zhiyan Wang, Yanjia Chen, Yanxin Han, Katherine L. Tucker, Hao Wu, Wei Jin

Summary: This study aimed to identify microbial signatures that contribute to the shared etiologies between chronic heart failure (CHF), type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. The serum levels of 151 microbial metabolites were measured in 260 individuals from the Risk Evaluation and Management of heart failure cohort, and it was found that those metabolites varied by an order of 10(5) fold. Key microbial metabolite-based risk scores were superior in CHF prognosis than the traditional Framingham or Get with the Guidelines-Heart Failure risk scores. Interactive visualization of these specific metabolite-disease links is available on our omics data server ().

Plant Protein but Not Animal Protein Consumption Is Associated with Frailty through Plasma Metabolites

Toshiko Tanaka, Jayanta K. Das, Yichen Jin, Qu Tian, Ruin Moaddel, Ann Zenobia Moore, Katherine L. Tucker, Sameera A. Talegawkar, Luigi Ferrucci

Summary: This study explores the role of circulating metabolites in mediating the relationship between dietary protein and frailty. The results suggest that higher intake of plant protein is associated with lower levels of frailty, while animal protein does not show such association. The study also identifies specific metabolites, such as lipid metabolites and tryptophan-related metabolites, that mediate the protective effect of plant protein on frailty.
