Purpose: The purposes of this article are to identify and review comprehensive sex education programs (CSEPs) available to adolescent females in Kenya, East Africa, to discuss barriers to implementing CSEPs in Kenya, and to highlight the role of nurses in improving and institutionalizing available CSEPs in Kenya. Design: Integrative review. Methods: A systematic search of six databases and other Internet sources was conducted to identify CSEPs currently available to adolescent girls in Kenya. Five CSEPs were identified. The CSEPs were evaluated using established criteria. Findings: All of the CSEPs were well designed and almost all were implemented with fidelity. Four of the five CSEPs met all of the criteria for well-designed CSEPs with only one showing lack of sustainability. Tuko Pamoja (We Are One) shows promise for wider implementation. Conclusions: CSEPs are a valid intervention leading to the reduction of teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted infections. The reach of the identified CSEPs varies, and sustainability is challenging due to lack of government and community support, lack of funding, and unsustainable teaching modalities. Clinical Relevance: Nurses can serve as liaisons between adolescents, the community, and the Kenyan government in promoting CSEPs. Nurses should be more readily utilized in educating community members and policy makers about the need for CSEPs in all Kenyan high schools. Nursing students can also be utilized in their community health role to teach curricula of CSEPs. Nurses should advocate for all adolescents to access reproductive health services and for all healthcare providers to provide comprehensive reproductive health care to them.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the social networks and support of older adults during a physical activity intervention, and how it is associated with physical activity. Findings showed that receiving support for physical activity from a spouse/partner, adult child, or friend led to greater improvements in daily physical activity minutes. Participants also developed plans to receive support from their close relationships for physical activity.

Summary: The systematic scoping review of the health of African migrant children across the globe revealed decreased health in various aspects such as nutrition, infectious diseases, mental health, and birth outcomes. Further qualitative studies are needed to determine barriers to service access after migration and investigate other underexplored health concerns of African migrant children.

Summary: HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects African immigrants in the United States. While awareness of PrEP is low among Ghanaian immigrants, there is a potential willingness to use it. Stigma reduction interventions may be crucial for scaling up PrEP in this population.

Heart Rate Variability in Adults With Substance Use Disorder: A Comprehensive Narrative Review

Seol Ju Esther Moon, Elizabeth A. Schlenk, Heeyoung Lee

Summary: Heart rate variability (HRV) is an indicator of autonomic abnormalities, but its role in substance use behavior and association with relapse signs is not well understood. This study aimed to review existing literature on HRV in substance users and its outcomes related to relapse risk factors. A systematic search of literature published in English from 2010 to 2020 was conducted, and 14 studies were included. The findings suggest that substance users have significantly decreased resting HRV compared to healthy controls, and lower HRV is associated with stress, craving, and greater symptom severities in individuals with substance use disorders. HRV may serve as a useful tool for monitoring relapse indications and guiding relapse prevention strategies.

Predicting physical activity and sarcopenia-related health outcomes in women with rheumatoid arthritis: A test of the self-determination theory

Chun-Ja Kim, Hye-Won Yun, Hee Sun Kang, Ju-Yang Jung, Elizabeth A. Schlenk

Summary: This study aimed to examine a hypothetical model of physical activity (PA) and health outcomes related to sarcopenia in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) based on self-determination theory. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 214 women diagnosed with RA from a university-affiliated hospital in South Korea. The results showed that physical activity was directly influenced by motivation for PA, while factors such as depression, self-efficacy for PA, health care provider's autonomy support, and basic psychological needs satisfaction indirectly affected PA. Physical activity directly affected perceived health status and thigh circumference, while perceived sarcopenia risk and handgrip strength were directly affected by disease activity and age.

Summary: This study aims to explore the relationship between sociodemographic factors and PrEP awareness and willingness to use. The findings suggest that African immigrants in the United States are at higher risk of HIV infection, but their awareness and willingness to use PrEP are relatively low. Therefore, there is a need for further research and interventions to increase PrEP awareness and provide options for HIV prevention among African immigrants.
