Familial aggregation has been consistently found in PD, but it is unclear whether there is a familial aggregation in families of patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) or progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). MSA and PSP cases were recruited from a two-arm case control study. One control was matched to each case for age, gender and living area. Medical history of first-degree relatives was obtained through a face-to-face questionnaire. Age-specific cumulative incidence of Parkinsonism and dementia in first-degree relatives of cases and controls was compared for MSA and PSP separately. Seventy-one pairs for MSA and their controls and 79 pairs for PSP and their controls were included. No significant familial aggregation was found in PSP. MSA cases reported Parkinsonism more often, but not dementia in their first-degree relatives than controls. MSA patients, but not those with PSP, have Parkinsonism more often in their first-degree relatives than controls.

Use of potentially driver-impairing drugs among older drivers

Sarah Zitoun, Edouard Baudouin, Emmanuelle Corruble, Jean-Sebastien Vidal, Laurent Becquemont, Emmanuelle Duron

Summary: This study investigated the consumption of potentially driver-impairing drugs among older drivers and found associations with chronic pain, depressive disorder, and polypharmacy, while having lower associations with type 2 diabetes and atrial fibrillation. The findings highlight the need for careful assessment of driver-impairing drug prescriptions in the elderly population.

An interactive video increasing French students' mental health literacy: a mixed-methods randomized controlled pilot study

Marine Queroue, Aude Pouymayou, Edwige Pereira, Christophe Tzourio, Juan Luis Gonzalez-Caballero, Ilaria Montagni

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the awareness and effectiveness of an interactive video on mental health literacy among French university students. Through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, results showed that the intervention group had increased or stable mental health literacy scores. Users appreciated the content and format of the video, suggesting its dissemination to other university campuses in France and internationally to promote mental health literacy among students.

Mixed-methods evaluation of a prevention campaign on binge drinking and cannabis use addressed to young people

Ilaria Montagni, Maelys Abraham, Christophe Tzourio, Amandine Luquiens, Viet Nguyen-Thanh, Guillemette Quatremere

Summary: The French "Friends also at night" campaign aimed to prevent binge drinking and cannabis use among young adults at parties through peer support. The evaluation of the campaign found positive perceptions among participants, who felt involved and believed the communication strategy was acceptable and effective. However, some negative aspects, particularly related to the language and tone of the campaign, were identified. Recommendations for improvement and future campaigns on similar topics are provided.

Summary: Observational studies have shown U-shaped associations between blood pressure (BP) and incident dementia in older age, but the results of BP-lowering treatment in hypertensive patients have been mixed. This study analyzed data from five randomized controlled trials to examine the effects of BP-lowering treatment on the prevention of dementia. The results showed that antihypertensive treatment reduced the risk of incident dementia, and the greater fall in BP was associated with a greater reduction in dementia risk.

Adverse childhood experiences and substance use among university students: a systematic review

Ashlyn Schwartz, Julie Arsandaux, Ilaria Montagni, Laurie L. Meschke, Cedric Galera, Christophe Tzourio

Summary: This study critically reviewed the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and substance use (SU) among university students. The findings showed that university students reporting ACEs were more likely to engage in alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, prescription-medication, and illicit drug use compared to those not reporting ACEs. The presence of four or more ACEs increased the likelihood of SU. A dose-response relationship between ACEs and SU for each substance was observed. The study highlighted the importance of ACE screening among university students to identify those at higher risk of SU and provide preventive or therapeutic interventions.

Summary: The prevalence and societal burden of dementia is expected to increase due to aging population. This study evaluates the potential impact of intervention scenarios targeting dementia risk factors on dementia burden. Micro-simulations are used to estimate the changes in dementia burden in France in 2040. The results show that targeting hypertension, diabetes, and physical inactivity could decrease dementia prevalence and increase life expectancy without dementia.

Summary: Plasma P-tau181 is a diagnostic marker for Alzheimer's disease that effectively detects A beta+ status and conversion to dementia. However, its levels can be influenced by renal function and should be taken into account in the diagnosis.

Summary: The study aims to assess and compare the overall costs of anticoagulant strategies (vitamin K antagonists or direct oral anticoagulants) in nursing homes in France, including drug costs, laboratory costs, and human capital. The results showed that despite higher drug costs, direct oral anticoagulants were associated with lower total costs and less time used by nurses and physicians.

Association between car driving and successful ageing. A cross sectional study on the S.AGES cohort

Summary: This study investigates whether driving status can be considered a proxy of successful ageing (SA) and identifies determinants associated with driving status in the 65+. The results show that 23.8% of drivers are classified as successful agers, compared to only 6.8% of non-drivers. The logistic model suggests that SA is associated with driver status. Driving reflects elders' independence, cognitive ability, and a means to maintain social interactions.

Head-to-Head Comparison of Two Plasma Phospho-tau Assays in Predicting Conversion of Mild Cognitive Impairment to Dementia

Sylvain Lehmann, Susanna Schraen-Maschke, Jean-Sebastien Vidal, Constance Delaby, Frederic Blanc, Claire Paquet, Bernadette Allinquant, Stephanie Bombois, Audrey Gabelle, Olivier Hanon, BALTAZAR Study Grp

Summary: This study compared the clinical performance of Lumipulse and Simoa assays in predicting the conversion to dementia in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The results showed that both assays had similar abilities, but Lumipulse was less affected by comorbidities. Plasma pTau181 was associated with renal dysfunction, cardiovascular factors, nutrition, and inflammatory markers. The study suggests that Lumipulse could be used as a noninvasive diagnostic tool for the management of Alzheimer's disease.
