Background: Evaluation of how Motor Imagery and conventional therapy (physiotherapy or occupational therapy) compare to conventional therapy only in their effects on clinically relevant outcomes during rehabilitation of persons with stroke. Design: Systematic review of the literature Methods: We conducted an electronic database search in seven databases in August 2005 and also hand-searched the bibliographies of studies that we selected for the review. Two reviewers independently screened and selected all randomized controlled trials that compare the effects of conventional therapy plus Motor Imagery to those of only conventional therapy on stroke patients. The outcome measurements were: Fugl-Meyer Stroke Assessment upper extremity score (66 points) and Action Research Arm Test upper extremity score (57 points). Due to the high variability in the outcomes, we could not pool the data statistically. Results: We identified four randomized controlled trials from Asia and North America. The quality of the included studies was poor to moderate. Two different Motor imagery techniques were used (three studies used audiotapes and one study had occupational therapists apply the intervention). Two studies found significant effects of Motor Imagery in the Fugl-Meyer Stroke Assessment: Differences between groups amounted to 11.0 (1.0 to 21.0) and 3.2 (-4 to 10.3) respectively and in the Action Research Arm Test 6.1 (-6.2 to 18.4) and 15.8 (0.5 to 31.0) respectively. One study did not find a significant effect in the Fugl-Meyer Stroke Assessment and Color trail Test (p = 0.28) but in the task-related outcomes (p > 0.001). Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that Motor imagery provides additional benefits to conventional physiotherapy or occupational therapy. However, larger and methodologically sounder studies should be conducted to assess the benefits of Motor imagery.

Mapping the landscape of lung cancer breath analysis: A scoping review (ELCABA)

Felix Schmidt, Dario Kohlbrenner, Stefan Malesevic, Alice Huang, Sabine D. Klein, Milo A. Puhan, Malcolm Kohler

Summary: Lung cancer is the leading cause of global cancer death, mainly due to late-stage detection. Low-dose CT screening provides an initial clinical solution, but further innovations are needed to overcome limitations. Breath analysis (BA) has great potential as a non-invasive and fast technology to supplement low-dose CT, but its adoption in clinical practice is limited. This scoping review provides a comprehensive summary of BA methods and biomarkers in lung cancer, and offers a framework for future research and translation into clinical workflows.

Post COVID-19 condition after Wildtype, Delta, and Omicron SARS-CoV-2 infection and prior vaccination: Pooled analysis of two population-based cohorts

Tala Ballouz, Dominik Menges, Marco Kaufmann, Rebecca Amati, Anja S. Frei, Viktor von Wyl, Jan A. Fehr, Emiliano Albanese, Milo Puhan, Dong Keon Yon

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of post COVID-19 condition (PCC) with novel SARS-CoV-2 variants and after prior vaccination. The findings revealed that vaccinated individuals infected with the Omicron variant had lower odds of developing PCC compared to non-vaccinated individuals. Furthermore, the severity of PCC-related symptoms was lower among vaccinated individuals infected with Omicron.

Recovery and symptom trajectories up to two years after SARS-CoV-2 infection: population based, longitudinal cohort study

Tala Ballouz, Dominik Menges, Alexia Anagnostopoulos, Anja Domenghino, Helene E. Aschmann, Anja Frei, Jan S. Fehr, Milo A. Puhan

Summary: This study evaluated longer term symptoms and health outcomes associated with a SARS-CoV-2 infection. The results showed that 22.9% of individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 did not fully recover by six months, but the proportion decreased to 17.2% at 24 months. Most participants had continued recovery or overall improvement over time, while a small percentage had worsening or alternating periods. The prevalence and severity of COVID-19 related symptoms also decreased over time, with 18.1% reporting symptoms at 24 months. Infected individuals had higher symptom risk compared with controls at six months.

Experiences of persons with multiple sclerosis with the Covid-19 vaccination: A cross-sectional study of the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Registry

Mina Stanikic, Eric Twomey, Milo A. Puhan, Christian P. Kamm, Anke Salmen, Vladeta Ajdacic-Gross, Chiara Zecca, Claudio Gobbi, Viktor von Wyl

Summary: The Swiss MS Registry conducted a survey on Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy, self-reported side effects, and changes in MS symptoms among people with MS. The results showed that vaccine hesitancy was low, and younger individuals, those with a history of Covid-19 infection, and those without regular contact with healthcare professionals were more likely to be hesitant.

Association between serologically confirmed COVID-19 infection and cognitive functioning in community dwelling older adults

Sabatini Serena, Pacifico Deborah, Frei Anja, Graf Gwendolyn, Milo A. Puhan, Emiliano Albanese

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection on cognitive functioning. It found that serologically confirmed COVID-19 infection was associated with cognitive decline. Participants who received COVID-19 vaccination had better cognitive functioning, while those with a history of infection had poorer cognitive functioning. This study strengthens the evidence of COVID-19-related cognitive decline and highlights the importance of addressing it in clinical and public health areas.

Associations of multilingualism and language proficiency with cognitive functioning: epidemiological evidence from the SwissDEM study in community dwelling older adults and long-term care residents

Summary: The study found that speaking multiple languages and having higher language proficiency were positively associated with better cognitive functioning in community-dwelling older adults, but not in institutionalized older adults. Multilingualism may contribute to cognitive reserve and delay cognitive decline in late life.

Summary: This study aims to develop a tool that facilitates communication and counseling on sexuality in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The survey showed that both patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) wanted to talk about sexuality, but there were communication barriers in doing so. The developed instrument, COmmunication about SexualitY in COPD (COSY), consists of four tools to help address these barriers and promote a more holistic consideration of quality of life.

Summary: This study compared patient selection and postoperative outcomes for gastrointestinal surgeries before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The results showed a reduction in caseload during certain periods, but no significant decrease in overall procedures. The population characteristics differed, with lower Body Mass Indices and more patients smoking and having diabetes in 2020. Delivering surgical care to COVID-19 patients in the same hospital was found to be safe, and healthcare officials should consider continuing surgical care during future health crises.
