It is reported that CLU rs2279590 polymorphism is significantly associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in European ancestry. Recent studies investigated rs2279590 polymorphism in Asian population (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Four studies showed negative association and two studies showed weak association between rs2279590 and AD. We believe that the weak association or no association may be caused by the relatively small sample size in Asian population. Here, we reinvestigated the association in Asian population. Meanwhile, to investigate the genetic heterogeneity of the rs2279590 polymorphism in Asian and Caucasian populations, we searched the PubMed and AlzGene databases and selected 11 independent studies (6 studies in Asian population and 5 studies in Caucasian population) including 20,655 individuals (8,605 cases and 12,050 controls) for meta-analysis. Our results showed significant association between rs2279590 polymorphism and AD in Asian population with P = 2.00E-04 and P = 2.00E-04 using additive and recessive models, respectively. We observed no significant heterogeneity between Asian and Caucasian populations. We believe that our results may be helpful to understand the mechanisms of CLU in AD pathogenesis and will be useful for future genetic studies in AD.

Composite Control Based on Feed-Forward and FISMC Method for Accurate Speed of Gimbal System With Harmonic Drive

Yangyang Shi, Yuanjin Yu, Qingying Wang, Haitao Li, Xi Chen

Summary: In the gimbal system of SGMSCMG, harmonic drive is used to ensure large output torque and reduce motor volume and weight, but its nonlinear characteristics decrease system performance. A composite control method based on model-based feed-forward and fuzzy integral sliding mode control (FISMC) is proposed to suppress gear wave torque and other disturbances. Simulation and experiments on SGMSCMG validate the effectiveness of the composite method, showing improved torque fluctuation suppression and gimbal system performance.

Zisheng Sun, Lingna Kong, Xiaoyan Wang, Yue Lei, Xige Li, Hongwei Tang, Yan Hou, Kun Chang, Zhaorong Chang

Summary: In this study, Fe3O4/C-Bi composites with carbon coating and bismuth added were prepared by step-by-step precipitation, spray carbon coating drying, and high-temperature treatment. The Fe3O4/C-Bi composite materials exhibited excellent electrochemical properties, especially the Fe3O4/C-Bi(5%) electrode, which showed the best performance. The composite materials effectively inhibited hydrogen evolution and passivation of iron electrodes, and AA600 cylindrical iron nickel batteries with Fe3O4/C-Bi(5%) as the active material for iron negative electrodes achieved sealing for the first time.

Summary: In order to effectively separate and recover Co(II) from the leachate of spent lithium-ion battery cathodes, solvent extraction with quaternary ammonium salt N263 in the sodium nitrite system was investigated. The extraction of Co(II) is related to the concentration of NO2-. The maximum extraction efficiency of Co(II) reached 99.16%. After counter-current extraction using the McCabe-Thiele diagram, the extraction efficiency of Co(II) exceeded 99.00% with Co(II) concentration of 2544 mg/L. The back-extraction efficiency of Co(II) achieved 91.41% under specific conditions.

Promoting research by reducing uncertainty in academic writing: a large-scale diachronic case study on hedging in Science research articles across 25 years

Mingxin Yao, Ying Wei, Huiyu Wang

Summary: This study tracked the diachronic development of hedges that express doubt and uncertainty in Science research articles from 1997 to 2021. The findings show a significant decrease in the use of such hedges in the past 25 years. This suggests that reducing uncertainty may be an implicit writing strategy correlated with the rising linguistic positivity in academic writing.

Summary: Electro-adsorption is a promising technology for wastewater treatment, but its practical application still faces challenges. This study developed a mesoporous carbon monolith (MCM) as an adsorbent, which showed high removal performances for both organic and inorganic contaminants with the aid of an electric field. The low resistance, high specific capacitance, and specific surface area of MCM were beneficial for contaminant transportation and storage, improving the removal performance.

Three-Dimensional Coffee-Ring Effect Induced Deposition on Foam Surface for Enhanced Photothermal Conversion

Yunjia Liu, Si Lin, Yali Zhu, Xiaoying Gao, Zhipeng Wang, Shenghong Yang, Jian Liu

Summary: A simple polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-mediated evaporation drying strategy is introduced to uniformly deposit functional constituents on porous foam. PVA enhances the coffee-ring effect and stabilizes various functional constituents, resulting in homogeneous accumulation on the surface periphery of the foam. The deposition thickness is dependent on the feeding amounts of PVA but independent of drying temperature. Furthermore, the formation of core-shell foams is induced by 3D outward capillary flow driven by contact surface pinning and continual interfacial evaporation. The enhanced interfacial photothermal effect and solar desalination performance of PVA/polypyrrole-coated foam are demonstrated.

Highly Efficient CO2 Reduction at Steady 2 A cm-2 by Surface Reconstruction of Silver Penetration Electrode

Shoujie Li, Xiao Dong, Jianing Mao, Wei Chen, Aohui Chen, Gangfeng Wu, Chang Zhu, Guihua Li, Yiheng Wei, Xiaohu Liu, Jiangjiang Wang, Yanfang Song, Wei Wei

Summary: A nanosheet shell (NS) vertically standing on the Ag hollow fiber (NS@Ag HF) surface formed by electrochemical surface reconstruction is reported. The as-prepared NS@Ag HF exhibited a high CO faradaic efficiency of 97% at an ultra-high current density of 2.0 A cm(-2) with sustained performance for continuous >200 h operation. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the promoted surface electronic structures of NS@Ag HF by the nanosheets suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction and facilitate the CO2 reduction kinetics. This work provides a feasible strategy for fabricating robust catalysts for highly efficient and stable CO2 reduction.

Summary: Flexible W/Bi and bismuth tungsten oxide composites based on thermoplastic vulcanizate with doping ratios from 20% to 100% were successfully fabricated. The ray attenuation abilities of the composites were investigated at various X-ray tube voltages and gamma ray energies. The study demonstrated that bismuth tungsten oxide particles exhibited more uniform dispersion within the polymer compared to W/Bi. The shielding parameters, including transmittance, attenuation coefficients, and lead equivalent, were experimentally and numerically investigated.

Spatial and temporal analysis of the seasonal dynamics of antibiotic resistance gene occurrence in recreational marine water

Danyang Shi, Zhongwei Yang, Yijun Wei, Jing Miao, Dong Yang, Jing Yin, Haibei Li, Tianjiao Chen, Shuqing Zhou, Junwen Li, Chao Li, Min Jin

Summary: A study conducted at the First Bathing Beach in Qingdao found that people who engage in water sports in recreational marine water may face a high risk of exposure to hazardous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The study analyzed antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), pathogenic bacteria, and 16S rRNA sequencing data, and found that sewage was the main source of ARG pollution in the swimming area during the cold season. However, ARG pollution in the swimming area was also driven by other sources, especially in the warm season.
