Summary: This study provides first evidence for the relevance of specific amygdala substructure reductions regarding cognitive symptom severity in AN and points toward novel mechanistic insight into the relationship between hypoleptinemia and rumination, which might involve the amygdaloid complex.

Summary: The study found that pancreatic efficiency of lipase secretion in girls with anorexia nervosa was normal, but the kinetics of this enzyme secretion were disturbed, potentially due to disorders in the functioning of the adipose-insular and islet-acinar axes.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between circulating SIRT1 and leptin, ghrelin, body mass index (BMI), and IgG reactive to hypothalamic antigens in anorexia nervosa (AN). Results showed that serum SIRT1 levels were increased in AN patients and decreased with the duration of illness. There was a negative correlation between SIRT1 and leptin/BMI, and a positive correlation between SIRT1 and ghrelin/IgG specific for hypothalamic antigens. These findings suggest that SIRT1 may serve as a clinical/biochemical parameter related to AN.

Summary: Anorexia nervosa is a disorder characterized by voluntary food restriction and severe weight loss in female adolescents. The process of incorporating the starved thin body into the self-concept is insufficiently researched. Starvation-induced increased urge to move and restlessness may contribute to the development of AN. Leptin administration has shown potential in alleviating AN symptoms, but full recovery requires addressing psychological conflicts through psychotherapy.

Summary: Eating disorders are psychiatric conditions that disturb eating or eating-related behaviors and impair physical and psychosocial functioning. The prevalence of these disorders is relatively high, and they are associated with various health problems. This article evaluates the benefits and harms of screening for eating disorders in adolescents and adults with a normal or high body mass index, and concludes that there is insufficient evidence to determine the balance of benefits and harms.

Summary: In this issue of International Journal of Eating Disorders, Walsh et al. review the research comparing atypical anorexia nervosa (atypical AN) and AN. Most differences observed were related to weight, while psychopathology and complications were similar. The findings suggest that atypical AN and AN are not fundamentally different, emphasizing the need for further research. The high prevalence of atypical AN in clinical settings highlights the importance of continuing research.

Summary: This study evaluated the plasma levels of APE-13 and ASP, as well as related metabolic and psychometric parameters, in patients with anorexia nervosa. The findings suggest that APE-13 and ASP may serve as biomarkers for anorexia nervosa, and their levels are associated with eating behavior, emotional behavior, and the severity of psychopathological symptoms of eating disorders.

Summary: A young woman presented with significant weight loss and malnutrition due to decreased food intake, initially diagnosed with ARFID but later found to have a suprasellar and pineal germinoma. While there have been cases of germinomas misdiagnosed as anorexia nervosa, this is the first reported case of a multifocal germinoma presenting as ARFID. The criteria for diagnosing ARFID do not include body image distortion, potentially leading to misdiagnosis.

Summary: Genetic correlations indicate a coexisting genetic predisposition to low leptin levels and risk for anorexia nervosa. Mendelian randomization analyses suggest a causal effect of lower leptin levels on a higher risk of AN, especially in females. However, there is no clear causal effect of AN on leptin levels. These findings imply that low endogenous leptin synthesis may be a risk factor for developing AN, pending confirmation in larger GWAS datasets.

Summary: Alterations in the gut microbiome and fecal metabolites were found in anorexia nervosa (AN), with differences seen between those with restricting AN (ANR) and binge-purging AN (ANBP) types. ANBP patients showed significant differences in microbial abundances and metabolites compared to ANR patients. Despite small sample size, this study confirms the occurrence of distinct gut dysbiosis in ANR and ANBP, showcasing different connections between gut microorganisms and fecal metabolites in the two AN types.

Summary: Despite limited knowledge about the benefit-risk ratio in clinical practice, a study monitoring children and adolescents treated with antidepressants and/or antipsychotics found that off-label use did not significantly increase the risk of serious adverse drug reactions. This suggests that closely monitored clinical settings can provide valuable insights bridging the gap between randomized controlled trials and real-world clinical settings.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the effects of pre-operative lifestyle interventions (PLI) on body mass index (BMI) one year after bariatric surgery. The results showed that PLI was more effective in reducing BMI before surgery compared to usual care. However, one year post-surgery, both groups had comparable BMI reductions, and the impact of pre-operative BMI reduction on post-operative BMI was uncertain.

Summary: Patients with chronic pain, especially those with somatoform pain disorders, may benefit from mirror therapy in terms of reducing pain intensity and modulating physiological parameters. This study showed that mirror therapy led to a reduction in pain intensity and increased sensitivity to cold stimuli among patients with somatoform pain disorders. It also revealed a decrease in the low-frequency band of heart rate variability, indicating a potential effect on autonomic nervous system regulation. However, further studies with larger sample sizes and control groups are needed to validate these findings.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between drug dose and serum concentration of fluoxetine in children and adolescents and established the therapeutic serum reference range. The study found a positive correlation between dose and serum concentration of fluoxetine and its metabolite, with higher body weight and female sex associated with lower serum concentrations and therapeutic response. Most patients showed marked or minimal improvements during treatment, with no reported adverse effects.
