The development of antibiotics has played a significant role in combating the dreaded infectious disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, typhoid fever and meningitis in 20th century. However, the improper use of antibiotics led to the development of multidrug resistance (MDR) in microbial flora raising a global public health concern of 21st century. This unforeseen threat demands the development of new drugs and strategies for combating antibiotic resistance shown by many microbial species. Recent developments in nanotechnology to engineer nanoparticles with desired physicochemical properties have been projected as a new line of defense against MDR micro-organism. In this review, we summarized and discussed the recent development demonstrating the potential of nanomaterials to evade the MDR. Nanoparticles have shown effective antimicrobial activity against MDR bacteria, such as Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, vancomycin resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and others. Furthermore, new strategies like combination of radiation and drugs with nanoparticle that are being explored to potentiate the effectiveness against MDR bacteria have also been summarized.

Concrete Crack Restoration Using Bacterially Induced Calcium Metabolism

Ashim Mitra, Smitha Mony Sreedharan, Rajni Singh

Summary: Concrete structures are prone to cracking, but microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation may be an effective method for repairing cracks. Depositing calcium pellets and bacteria in concrete cracks can provide strength and adhesion, effectively filling the cracks.

An Insight into Efflux-Mediated Arsenic Resistance and Biotransformation Potential of Enterobacter Cloacae RSC3 from Arsenic Polluted Area

Summary: The indiscriminate discharge of heavy metals/metalloids into sustainable agro-ecosystems poses a major threat to food security and human health globally. This study identified and evaluated the arsenic removal/detoxification potential of arsenic-resistant bacteria. Enterobacter cloacae, isolated from an arsenic-rich environment, demonstrated high tolerance to arsenic and possessed the gene (arsC) responsible for the transformation of arsenate to arsenite. In addition, this bacterial strain displayed resistance to other heavy metals and antibiotics. The findings suggest that E. cloacae has the potential for the remediation of arsenic-contaminated environments.

Microbial lipopeptides: Properties, mechanics and engineering for novel lipopeptides

Smitha Mony Sreedharan, Niharika Rishi, Rajni Singh

Summary: Microorganisms produce lipopeptides that are active surface agents with amphiphilic properties. These compounds, isolated mainly from Bacillus and Pseudomonas species, exhibit antimicrobial activity against plant pathogens by inhibiting their growth. Lipopeptides have various mechanisms, making them suitable as biocontrol agents. The biosynthesis of lipopeptides involves non-ribosomal peptide synthases, which can be engineered for overproduction and generating new lipopeptides with high efficacy. This review provides an update on the applications of lipopeptides in various fields.
