Synthesis and Antimicrobial Activity of a Silver-Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite

A silver-hydroxyapatite nanocomposite has been obtained by a colloidal chemical route and subsequent reduction process in H-2/Ar atmosphere at 350 degrees C. This material has been characterized by TEM, XRD, and UV-Visible spectroscopy, showing the silver nanoparticles (similar to 65 nm) supported onto the HA particles (similar to 130 nm) surface without a high degree of agglomeration. The bactericidal effect against common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria has been also investigated. The results indicated a high antimicrobial activity for Staphylococcus aureus, Pneumococcus and Escherichia coli, so this material can be a promising antimicrobial biomaterial for implant and reconstructive surgery applications. Summary: This study investigates the effect of the degree of compaction of green parts on the properties of a Graphite-5.5 vol. % Molybdenum- 0.6 vol. % Titanium composite obtained by SPS. The composite exhibits different properties depending on the direction of the applied pressure, with significantly better in-plane properties. Samples uniaxially pressed at 60 MPa show highly improved properties comparable to those obtained under extreme conditions, suggesting the potential for industrial-scale production and applications as a heat sink.

Summary: This study aims to develop a new multifunctional composite material for preventing peri-implantitis. The results show that the dental implant systems with the coating exhibit stability under long-term stress. A clinical case report demonstrates the absence of inflammation around the coating after one year of implantation.
