Chromogranin A (CgA) is a member of the granins, a family of acidic proteins found in abundance in (neuro) endocrine cells (e.g., in chromaffin cells) and in some tumors. Like other granins, CgA has a granulogenic role in secretory granule biogenesis and is stored in these organelles. CgA is partially processed differentially in various cell types to yield biologically active peptides, such as vasostatin, pancreastatin, catestatin, and serpinins. In this review, we describe the roles of CgA and several of its derived peptides. CgA, which is elevated in the blood of cancer patients, inhibits angiogenesis and exerts protective effects on the endothelial barrier function in tumors, thus affecting response to chemotherapy. Recent studies indicate that the serpinins promote cell survival and myocardial contractility and relaxation. Other peptides such as pancreastatin were found to have significant effects on inhibition of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and glucose uptake, induction of glycogenolysis in hepatocytes, and inhibition of lipogenesis. In contrast, catestatin has opposite effects to that of pancreastatin in glucose metabolism and lipogenesis. Catestatin appears to also play a significant role in cardiac function, blood pressure regulation, and mutations in the catestatin domain of the CgA gene are associated with hypertension in humans.

Systematic review and meta-analysis on microRNAs in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Hua Liu, Shan Lan, Xiao-Jie Shi, Fang-Cheng Fan, Qing-Shan Liu, Lin Cong, Yong Cheng

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in the development of neurodegenerative disorders, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Through a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis, the study identified elevated levels of miR-206, miR-133b, and miR-338-3p in patients with ALS compared to healthy controls. These findings suggest that miR-206, miR-133b, and miR-338-3p may serve as potential promising biomarkers for ALS, indicating their importance in the pathogenesis and progression of the disease.

Risk Factors for Postpartum Depression Based on Genetic and Epigenetic Interactions

Fan Luo, Zimo Zhu, Yang Du, Lei Chen, Yong Cheng

Summary: Postpartum depression is a serious mood disorder that occurs after childbirth and can have lifelong consequences for women and their families. It is influenced by various risk factors, including environmental and genetic factors. Gene-environment interactions play a role in postpartum depression, as evidenced by studies on genes related to neurotransmitters, the HPA axis, and the kynurenine pathway. However, the conclusions regarding these risk factors, especially genetic factors, are not consistent, and further research is needed to understand the heritability and susceptibility of postpartum depression.

Neurometabolite levels in the brains of patients with autism spectrum disorders: A meta-analysis of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies (N=1501)

Yang Du, Lei Chen, Mei-Chen Yan, Yan-Li Wang, Xiao-Lin Zhong, Chen-Xi Xv, Yao-Bo Li, Yong Cheng

Summary: A meta-analysis of 54 studies revealed that patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have altered levels of neurometabolites in specific brain regions compared to healthy controls. Lower levels of N-acetyl-aspartate-containing compound (NAA), choline-containing compound (Cho), and NAA/(creatine-containing compound) Cr ratios in the gray matter, as well as lower levels of NAA and glutamate + glutamine (Glx) in the white matter, were observed in ASD patients. Additionally, the frontal cortex showed decreased NAA and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, NAA/Cr ratios, and increased glutamate (Glu) levels. These findings suggest that neurometabolite alterations in specific brain regions are associated with ASD, and age is a confounding factor for certain neurometabolite levels in patients with ASD.

MicroRNA schizophrenia: Etiology, biomarkers and therapeutic targets

Heng-Chang Zhang, Yang Du, Lei Chen, Zeng-Qiang Yuan, Yong Cheng

Summary: Schizophrenia-related symptoms, including positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms, have serious effects on public health, affecting approximately 1% of the population. Recent studies have shown that besides the traditional dopaminergic pathway, the etiology of schizophrenia involves neuronal networks such as glutamate, GABA, serotonin, BDNF, oxidative stress, inflammation, and the immune system. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small noncoding RNA molecules, have been identified as potential factors in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, influencing these systems. Understanding how changes in miRNAs affect critical signaling pathways could lead to improved approaches in treating and diagnosing schizophrenia.

Hua Liu, Yang Du, Lian Lin Liu, Qing Shan Liu, He Hui Mao, Yong Cheng

Summary: This study evaluated the neuroprotective and anti-depressive effects of Mogroside V (MGV), the main component of Siraitia grosvenorii (SG) extract, both in vitro and in vivo. MGV demonstrated a protective effect on PC12 cells with corticosterone-induced injury and relieved depressive symptoms in the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) depression model. Additionally, MGV significantly reduced inflammatory and oxidative stress levels, and decreased apoptosis in hippocampal nerve cells through the inhibition of the BDNF/TrkB/AKT pathway.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a complex group of neurodevelopmental disorders caused by genetic and environmental factors. This study investigated gene expression abnormalities in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of a rat model of ASD, and found significant differences in gene expression between the ASD model and control groups. Additionally, a negative regulatory network of miRNAs-mRNAs was identified, which may play a key role in the development of ASD.
