Summary: In this study, polyamide and polyester thin-film composites (TFCs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were fabricated as selective layers on a polyimide aerogel support for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes. The polyimide aerogel support exhibited high stability and porosity, enabling high solvent flux. Both the experimental and predicted molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) values were obtained for the COFs and polyester TFC membranes. The operating temperature had minimal effect on the OSN performance.

Summary: The methodology utilizes polymer capsules with integrated plasmonic nanoparticles to enable localized Ca2+ release by photoexcitation. Near-infrared light is used to individually excite micrometer-sized capsules, causing photothermal heating and increasing the free cytosolic Ca2+ concentration. This approach allows for local lysosomal Ca2+ release in a desired target cell.

Summary: This article introduces a new epoxy curing method that can be used for membrane preparation and has been successfully applied in solvent-tolerant nanofiltration experiments. UF membranes with a retention for bovine serum albumin of -40% and a water permeance of 171 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 were prepared, and selective top layers were synthesized on these supports layers via interfacial polymerization or interfacial initiation of polymerization. The testing results showed that these membranes have excellent separation performance in solvent-water mixtures.

Summary: This study investigates the spallation of isolated aluminum nanoparticles induced by rapid photothermal heating. By coupling a focused laser to an optical grating substrate and plasmonic resonance of the nanoparticles, the absorption cross section and heating rate are enhanced. The melting of the aluminum core is found to be necessary for the spallation process, and the presence of a graphene layer promotes the formation of discrete particles.

Summary: Nanofiltration (NF) is an established membrane technology for purifying water streams, and there is a growing demand for solvent recovery and recycling in industry. Solvent resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) and solvent tolerant nanofiltration (STNF) offer economical and eco-friendly solutions, but there are challenges in bridging the gap between academic research and industrial implementation. This critical review discusses the evaluator chart, which includes various factors for assessing the industrial potential of NF and SRNF membranes, and highlights trends in SRNF research from 2015 to 2020.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that vibration- or rotation-based techniques can effectively mitigate fouling during membrane filtration. However, it is difficult to incorporate these techniques with spiral wound modules (SWMs) widely used in water and wastewater treatment. This study developed a prototype membrane system to accommodate angular vibrations with a modified SWM, and experimental results showed that applying angular vibrations can effectively control algal fouling in an SWM with lower energy consumption compared to traditional methods.

Summary: Increasing temperatures worldwide pose a significant health risk, exacerbated by high humidity. Conventional air conditioners contribute heavily to carbon dioxide emissions, with dehumidification being a major factor. Membrane-based dehumidification system offers energy efficiency and non-toxic water vapor removal. This study demonstrates a membrane dehumidification system with polymeric hollow fibers coated with a green polyphenol coating, showing remarkable water vapor transport rate and selectivity. Long-term testing reveals minimal decline in vapor transport and a 4-5 times higher coefficient of performance (COP) compared to conventional dehumidifiers, making it a highly competitive, energy-saving device with reduced emissions and a smaller footprint.
