Waste of electronic and electrical equipment (e-waste) generated in Indonesia is expected to increase due to high growth of the Indonesian economy and fast development in technology. As Indonesia has not yet had specified criteria on e-waste, in this study, e-waste is defined as any obsolete or unwanted electronic and electrical equipment that is introduced into the recycling and disposal process. The objective of this study is to estimate the e-waste generated in Indonesian households using the method of material flow analysis. The amount of generated e-waste could be used for constructing an e-waste recycling management system in Indonesia. E-waste materials that need to be treated could be known. In this study, some types of equipment, such as television, washing machine, refrigerator, personal computer, and mobile phone, were chosen to be tracers. Using the modified material flow analysis model proposed by Steubing et al. (Waste Manage 30:473-482, 38), the potential e-waste that was generated from households was estimated. The total estimated accumulation of generated e-waste from households in 2015 and 2025 is about 285,000 and 622,000 tonnes, respectively. If a proper recycling system was in place, a new source for valuable materials recovery would be created, as well as protecting the environment and health.

Baseflow and Stormflow Zinc Loads in a Small Agricultural River Catchment Influenced by an Industrial Area

Pertiwi Andarani, Hardianti Alimuddin, Kuriko Yokota, Takanobu Inoue, Samim Obaid, Minh Ngoc Nguyen

Summary: The study evaluated the sources and discharge of zinc in an agricultural river, finding that zinc in baseflow mainly came from point sources, while zinc in stormflow primarily originated from non-point sources, which were responsible for elevated levels of SS, Fe, and Zn. The study emphasized the importance of adequately treating zinc point sources for better river management and controlling particulate zinc released into rivers during storm events.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination in urban rivers, particularly zinc (Zn) compounds at current exposure levels, is a severe problem in urban environments. This study assessed the impact of urbanization and industrialization on zinc pollution in surface sediment of the Umeda River. Results showed that zinc concentrations were influenced by particulate organic carbon and particle size, and the zinc levels in the study area did not pose a major threat to biota. The study also found that zinc pollution in surface sediment was influenced by anthropogenic activities such as industrialization and urbanization.

Summary: Zinc is an essential element for life but also poses environmental risks. This study evaluates the spatial-temporal and diel variability of zinc in the Umeda River in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The results show that the zinc fluxes are higher on weekdays compared to weekends.

Summary: This study investigates the generation of plastic litter in the surface water of Jakarta and Indonesia, and finds that rivers are the main source of plastic pollution. The proportion of plastic litter in rivers and holding facilities is approximately 74% and 87% respectively. The study calls for further field investigation to design an effective clean-up system and litter-prevention strategy to reduce the severe impacts of plastic pollution on aquatic ecosystems and human health.

Zinc contamination in surface water of the Umeda River, Japan

P. Andarani, H. Alimuddin, R. Suzuki, K. Yokota, T. Inoue

Summary: The study found spatial and temporal variability of zinc contamination in the surface water of the Umeda River in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, with higher concentrations observed downstream. Despite industrial wastewater having lower zinc concentrations than the national standards, it still impacts the water quality. Additionally, reduced precipitation resulting in lower river discharges may lead to increased zinc concentrations.
