A new species of Cynomops (Chiroptera: Molossidae) from the northwestern slope of the Andes

Summary: The systematics and taxonomy of the broadly distributed bats of the genus Cynomops has changed significantly with the splitting of species and identification of a new species. The study used morphological and molecular data to recognize a new species in western Colombia, western Ecuador, and northwestern Peru. This highlights the importance of considering multiple lines of evidence in the recognition of new species.

Molecular systematics and biogeographic insights of the Calomys callosus complex (Rodentia, Cricetidae)

Summary: This study investigates the relationships, taxonomy, distribution, and evolutionary relationships among several species of the genus Calomys using mitochondrial and nuclear gene data. The results support the original biogeographic hypothesis and suggest that different regions in South America may have been colonized by different species of the Calomys callosus complex.

Systematics and diversification of the Ichthyomyini (Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) revisited: evidence from molecular, morphological, and combined approaches

Summary: This study conducted an integrative study of the systematics and biogeography of the Neotropical cricetid rodents, Ichthyomyini. The results obtained are inconsistent with the currently accepted classification and understanding of the tribe. It was also found that Ichthyomyini is one of the main Andean radiations of sigmodontine cricetids with an evolutionary history dating to the Late Miocene.

Fine-scale spatial variation shape fecal microbiome diversity and composition in black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus)

Sufia Akter Neha, Jorge Salazar-Bravo

Summary: This study examined the impact of habitat, geographic location, and environmental factors on the fecal microbiota of prairie dogs. The results showed that microbiota diversity and composition varied across sampling sites and habitats, with urban areas having reduced diversity and higher abundance of pathogenic bacteria. Alistipes shahii was identified as an important species driving changes in fecal microbiome composition. The average maximum temperature was found to be the best predictor of microbial diversity.

Molecular Mechanisms of Persistence in Protozoan Parasites

Asfiha Tarannum, Cristian Camilo Rodriguez-Almonacid, Jorge Salazar-Bravo, Zemfira N. Karamysheva

Summary: This article provides an overview of the molecular mechanisms of protozoan parasite persistence in vertebrate hosts, including the function of persisters, their formation, and the specific molecular interactions between host and parasite during persistence. The study also examines the metabolic, transcriptional, and translational changes that protozoan parasites undergo during persistence in vertebrate hosts. Key findings suggest that protozoan parasites employ various strategies to evade host immune surveillance and sustain their persistence.
