Summary: Here, a new aliphatic hybrid guanidine N,O-donor ligand (TMGeech) and its zinc chloride complex ([ZnCl2(TMGeech)]) are introduced. The complex shows high catalytic activity for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide in toluene, surpassing the toxic industry standard tin octanoate by a factor of 10. The catalytic activity of [ZnCl2(TMGeech)] for the chemical recycling of polylactide (PLA) by alcoholysis in THF is investigated, demonstrating fast production of value-added lactates at mild temperatures.

Summary: In this study, two bulky phenyl diphosphazene bases, p-PDPB and m-PDPB, were synthesized and used in combination with ureas and squaramides as hydrogen-bond donors to mediate stereocontrolled ring opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide. The phenyl diphosphazene based/urea binary catalytic system successfully synthesized semicrystalline PLAs with narrow dispersity and high tacticity (P-m up to 0.84) in a well-controlled manner. Structural analysis confirmed the linear structure and high end-group fidelity of the resulting polymers, and MALDI-TOF MS analysis indicated the good controllability of the binary catalytic system with minimal transesterification.

Summary: In this study, a series of organobases and ureas were used as binary catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide. By carefully selecting the combination of organobase and bisurea, controlled ROP of l-lactide was achieved, leading to the preparation of well-defined polylactides with various terminal groups. A high-molecular-weight PLA sample with a M-n up to 73.8 kDa was obtained at a low catalyst loading of 0.05 mol% relative to the monomer, and it showed good mechanical properties comparable to commercial PLA.

Summary: The isoselective ring-opening polymerization of racemic lactide was achieved by using N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) with mono(thio)ureas or bis(thio)ureas as catalytic systems. The highest P-m value of 0.91 was observed at -70 degrees C, with high stereoselectivity attributed to chain-end control mechanism.

Summary: As the concern for environmental effects of plastics grows, the industry is turning towards more sustainable polymers, such as polythioesters (PTEs). PTEs have gained attention for their enhanced properties and high sustainability potential due to the introduction of sulfur atoms and their inherent susceptibility to degradation. This review critically discusses the potential sustainability of PTEs obtained through ring-opening polymerization of thio(no)lactones, including their industrial perspective and comparison to aliphatic polyesters (PEs).

Summary: The study found that the acyl chlorides derived from NHS and MI can efficiently terminate the living ring-opening polymerization of aliphatic polyesters, producing NHS- and MI-functionalized polymers with high yields. These polymers exhibit high reactivity towards amine- and thiol-containing model substrates in both organic and aqueous media.

Summary: Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligosaccharides widely used in various fields. This study successfully achieved quantitative functionalization of various types of CDs using 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as a catalyst. The inclusion complex formed between DMAP and β-CD was characterized for the first time, and its association constant was estimated.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters in the presence of stannous octoate through density functional theory calculations, revealing that the carbonyl oxygen plays a significant role and stannous octoate acts as a catalyst rather than an initiator in the process.

Summary: The development of functional materials from food waste sources and minerals is of high importance. In this study, PLA/silica composites were prepared and their adsorption properties for metal ions were investigated. The results showed that the polymerization reaction on the modified silica surface led to higher adsorption capacity of the composites.

Summary: An efficient polymer cyclization process was developed in this study to produce well-defined monocyclic polymers by pre-stacking of functional groups and a photo-cycloaddition reaction. Continuous-flow technology improved the efficiency and reduced photodamage. This method has the potential for large-scale continuous production of cyclic polymers.

Summary: The ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclopropenes using hydrazonium initiators was investigated. The initiators, formed by condensing 2,3-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and an aldehyde, polymerize cyclopropene monomers through a sequence of [3+2] cycloaddition and cycloreversion reactions. The study showed that the monomer to initiator ratio had a positive correlation with the degree of polymerization.

Summary: A simple zinc catalyst has been found to exhibit high activity in both the synthesis and degradation of polylactide, showing one of the highest activities in ring-opening polymerization of lactides even under industrial conditions. The same complex also proved to be efficient in depolymerization of polylactide by alcoholysis at room temperature and without solvent, reducing costs and environmental impact.

Summary: Photopolymerization is gaining interest in both industrial and academic fields due to its high reaction kinetics, low emissions of organic solvents, and reduced shrinking stress. This method has mainly been developed for radical polymerization of vinyl monomers and to a lesser extent for ring-opening polymerization (ROP). With the emergence of new initiating systems, the photopolymerization of various cyclic monomers has expanded beyond epoxides, which were the first monomers polymerized by cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP).
