Summary: In this study, genomic characterization of Aurantiochytrium sp. SW1, a potential producer of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), was carried out. The results reveal the genome information and metabolic pathways related to DHA synthesis in this strain. It is found that Aurantiochytrium sp. SW1 has the potential for high DHA production, and several key genes and enzymes involved in lipid metabolism and fatty acid biosynthesis pathways are identified.

Summary: In this study, we identified PUFA biosynthesis-related genes in A. royi and found that copepodid and adult stages are high in LC-PUFAs. The increased gene expression in the adult stages is correlated with the higher concentration of DHA and EPA.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of maternal fat intake on PUFA status, gene expression, inflammatory markers, and lung function in offspring. The results showed that excessive maternal fat intake can modify hepatic PUFA status in offspring through regulation of gene expression and lead to respiratory dysfunction in the offspring.

Summary: The study investigated the expression patterns of genes involved in LC-PUFA biosynthesis during early life stages of the tropical gar Atractosteus tropicus, finding that the activity of Fads and Elovl enzymes is influenced by transcriptional and dietary factors. The results suggest that the tropical gar activates its LC-PUFA biosynthetic machinery to produce ARA, EPA and DHA to meet physiological demands at crucial developmental milestones during early development.

Summary: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are important for human health and can be synthesized by eukaryotes through two pathways. The eukaryotic PUFA synthase pathway shows similarities and differences compared to the well-studied prokaryotic pathway. Utilizing this pathway in microbial cell factories to produce PUFAs still faces challenges, such as understanding synthesis mechanisms and genetic manipulation of eukaryotic hosts.

Summary: Srs2 is a crucial DNA repair enzyme that regulates the formation of homologous recombination intermediates by removing a recombinase called Rad51. Recent research indicates that two motor proteins, Rad54 and Rdh54, can restrict the activity of Srs2 and facilitate the progression of recombination.

Summary: This study investigated the requirements of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) in the commercially important alfonsino fish, Beryx splendens. The results showed that B. splendens obtains substantial amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from its natural diet. The study also confirmed the enzymatic capabilities of fatty acid desaturase (Fads2) and elongases (Elovl5, Elovl4a, and Elovl4b) in LC-PUFA biosynthesis in B. splendens.

Summary: This study investigated the functions of ORFA, ORFB, ORFC, and their individual functional domain genes in fatty acid synthesis by heterologous expression in Yarrowia lipolytica. The results showed that the expression of these genes or functional domains led to an increase in very long-chain PUFA content. Transcriptomic analysis revealed the upregulation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and pentose phosphate pathway, and the downregulation of triacylglycerol biosynthesis, fatty acid synthesis pathway, and fl-oxidation. These findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding the function of PKS in fatty acid synthesis and the mechanism of PUFA biosynthesis.

Summary: This study suggests that the mutant type (HR-MUT) of the Homologous recombination (HR) pathway may impact the chemotherapy sensitivity and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. HR-MUT patients have a lower probability of tumor metastasis after chemotherapy, and HR-MUT can be used as an independent predictor of chemotherapy prognosis for CRC patients.

Summary: Longer-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) are essential for leukocyte function and can be obtained from the diet or converted from essential fatty acids (EFAs). Our study found that different EFA substrate ratios can affect LCPUFA biosynthesis in human T lymphocytes, with implications for T-cell EFA metabolism and dietary fat effects on T lymphocyte function.

Summary: The study found that blood group-specific glycans are present in both serum/plasma and cerebrospinal fluid, predominantly in the form of glycosphingolipids on lipoproteins rather than glycoproteins. The expression of these antigens depends not only on blood type but also on secretor status. Low-molecular-weight blood group-specific glycans of different blood types exist in serum/plasma and have diverse structures.

Summary: The study revealed that cell lines from red sea bream and Japanese flounder lack the ability to synthesize EPA or DHA on their own, possibly due to a lack of specific desaturase activity. Furthermore, a sensitive and reproducible non-radioactive method for evaluating LC-PUFA synthesis in fish cells using stable isotopes and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was provided.
