Summary: The first identification of a Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium (MAA) strain isolated from a cow in Jilin Province, China is described in this study. The strain is confirmed to be MAA based on the analysis of insertion sequence amplification and whole genome sequencing. The study provides evidence that MAA may pose an infection risk to cattle and contributes to the phylogenetic understanding of Mycobacterium avium.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the clinical background and chest HRCT findings between MABC-PD and MAC-PD patients. The results showed that MABC-PD patients had a higher prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and low attenuation on HRCT. The distribution of abnormal shadows and the number of involved lung lobes were also different between the two groups. The high virulence of MABC may contribute to these radiological features.

This review considers the factors influencing clinicians when treating NTM-PD and discusses the outcomes of key studies on the pharmacological management of different types of NTM-PD.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the cytokine profiles of CD4+T and CD19+B cells in different clinical stages of pulmonary Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease. The results showed that Th1 cytokines had significantly higher responses in post-treatment and on-treatment patients compared to before-treatment patients and normal controls. Non-Th1 cytokines showed significantly higher responses in before-treatment patients. CD19+B cells had similar responses to CD4+T cells.

Summary: This study investigated the treatment outcomes of cavitary nodular bronchiectatic (C-NB)-type Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) pulmonary disease (PD) and found that treatment with guideline-based therapy (GBT) resulted in significantly higher culture conversion rates for C-NB type compared to fibrocavitary (FC) type. Furthermore, it was observed that oral antibiotics alone could effectively treat C-NB type.

Summary: The impact of co-infection with other pathogenic microorganisms on the clinical outcomes of Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) after treatment initiation has been examined in this study. The results indicated that the co-infection did not affect therapeutic efficacy compared to MAC alone. However, the co-infection group showed interference with improvement in chest CT findings.

Summary: The natural history of MAC-PD is difficult to predict at diagnosis in immunocompetent patients, and current multidrug chemotherapy options are not effective enough. This study found that anti-MBGL antibody titers are useful for assessing refractory MAC-PD, and when combined with clinical poor prognostic characteristics, they enhance the accuracy of predicting treatment outcomes and mortality.

Summary: This retrospective study in Taiwan examined the treatment responses and outcomes in patients with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD). Summary: In this study, patients with MAC-PD treated with a macrolide + rifamycin + ethambutol (M + R + EMB)-based regimen had a higher microbiological cure rate than those treated with other regimens. After 6 months of treatment, patients with persistently positive sputum smears had a lower microbiological cure rate than those with negative sputum smears. Among patients with microbiological cure, the median time from sputum culture conversion to treatment completion was 221.5 days (range, 0-483), and the 1-year relapse rate was 17%.

Summary: The study established a community-based cohort to assess the long-term impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on disaster victims and gene-environment interactions on major disease incidence. Results showed that 70% of participants joined at health check-up sites, Type 1 survey participants were more likely to have psychological distress, women were more likely to have psychological distress than men, and coastal residents had higher levels of psychological distress compared to inland residents.
