Social capital and pneumococcal vaccination (PPSV23) in community-dwelling older Japanese: a JAGES multilevel cross-sectional study

Kousuke Iwai-Saito, Yugo Shobugawa, Katsunori Kondo

Summary: The study found that older adults who participated in social groups, had social ties, or engaged in mutual support were more likely to receive the PPSV23 vaccination. Additionally, higher rates of vaccination were associated with rich community-level civic participation. Therefore, enhancing social capital may help reduce the inequality in PPSV23 vaccination rates among older adults in different municipalities.

Summary: The Alpha variant of SARS-CoV-2 showed high transmissibility among children and adults in a nursery cluster in Niigata, Japan. The household secondary attack rates were higher for children-origin and adult-origin infections compared to non-VOCs. Increased transmissibility of current or future VOCs could lead to greater transmission from children to adults or other children.

Three-Dimensional Cell Culture Models to Study Respiratory Virus Infections Including COVID-19

Aya Harb, Mohammad Fakhreddine, Hassan Zaraket, Fatima A. Saleh

Summary: Respiratory viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, have severe effects on health and there is an urgent need for new tools to study their pathogenesis and develop new antiviral drugs and vaccines. Three-dimensional culture models, such as hydrogels, bioreactors, spheroids, and 3D bioprinting, are emerging as desirable approaches to understand virus-host interactions and identify therapeutic agents. This article reviews various 3D models used to study common respiratory viruses, including their applications in understanding SARS-CoV-2 infectivity and developing potential therapies.
