Summary: The study shows that high-dose diclofenac inhibits the growth of MRSA without inducing drug-resistant mutations easily, while low-dose diclofenac can resensitize bacteria to beta-lactams and inhibit biofilm formation. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses indicate that diclofenac reduces the expression of genes and proteins associated with antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation. Murine implant infection models suggest that diclofenac combined with beta-lactams can substantially alleviate MRSA infections in vivo, offering promising applications for preventing perioperative infections.

Summary: This study investigated the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of MRSA clones isolated from PJI patients in a hospital in Taiwan. The findings showed that ST239 MRSA isolates were highly resistant to multiple antibiotics, had a high biofilm formation ability, and infected patients typically exhibited fever and inflammation. Additionally, knee infections were mainly attributed to ST59 MRSA, and there was an increasing trend of infections caused by ST8 and other MRSA genotypes in PJI patients.

Summary: Felodipine has antibacterial effects against MRSA, biofilm, and persisters. It can inhibit the expression of proteins associated with aminoglycoside resistance, eradicate formed biofilms and kill persisters. Felodipine also reduces MRSA virulence and modulates bacterial metabolism. It inhibits the growth of persisters by binding to a protease. In a mouse infection model, felodipine in combination with gentamicin alleviates bacterial burden and inflammation.

Summary: The main aim of this systematic review is to quantify the risk and identify predictors of clinical progression of SARS-CoV-2 in hematological patients compared to different control populations. The study found that hematological patients had a higher risk of COVID-19-related mortality, hospitalization, intensive-care admission, and mechanical ventilation compared to controls. Older age, male sex, and hypertension were significantly related to worse clinical outcomes in hematological patients with COVID-19.

Summary: This multinational study describes the clinical profile of patients with invasive Escherichia coli disease (IED) in tertiary care hospitals. Most patients with IED were adults aged >= 60 years, and the urinary tract was the most common source of infection. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) was identified in 77.4% of patients, and the case-fatality rate was 20.0%. A proposed clinical case definition showed a 96.1% agreement with physician's diagnoses.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) and the best available therapy (BAT) in treating solid organ transplant recipients with bloodstream infection caused by carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. The results showed that patients treated with CAZ-AVI had higher clinical success rates at 14-day and 30-day and lower 30-day mortality compared to those receiving BAT.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the predictors of negative antibody response in solid organ transplant recipients after the first booster of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Machine learning models and clinical data were used to identify age, type of transplant, time between transplant and vaccination, immunosuppressive drugs, type of vaccine, and graft function as significant predictors of negative antibody response. This study is of significant importance for improving vaccination strategies in solid organ transplant recipients.

Summary: In this study, the tissue location, characteristics, and transdifferentiation steps of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) cells were investigated. It was found that CD34+ stromal cells/Telocytes (CD34+SCs/TCs) in the external layer of blood vessels and around skin appendages contribute to the development of neovessels in KS. These cells express markers for endothelial cells (ECs), have similar ultrastructural characteristics as ECs, and participate in the formation of lymphangiomatous or spindle-cell patterns. The growth of neovessels involves intussusceptive mechanisms, leading to the formation of different KS variants. These findings have histogenic, clinical, and therapeutic implications.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness and safety of fosfomycin trometamol and other oral drugs as step-down therapy for multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli (MDR-Ec) induced bacteremic urinary tract infections (BUTI). The results showed no significant difference in clinical and microbiological cure between fosfomycin trometamol and other drugs, but the relapse rate was higher in the fosfomycin trometamol group. Therefore, fosfomycin trometamol may be a reasonable option for step-down therapy in BUTI, but the relapse rate needs further evaluation.

Summary: Strategic and standardised approaches are crucial for analyzing and reporting surveillance data on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and informing antibiotic policies. This paper describes a multidisciplinary initiative involving experts from the human, animal, and environmental sectors to develop proposals for structuring and reporting full-scale AMR and antimicrobial consumption/antimicrobial residue surveillance data. The recommendations from this study can support national and regional plans to reduce resistance rates and promote a One Health approach to antimicrobial policy.

Summary: This study evaluated the physical and chemical stability of temocillin at different temperatures and stored in different containers at the recommended dose for OPAT. It was found that temocillin is stable under OPAT conditions and can be an appropriate treatment option for patients. A novel LC-MS/MS method was also developed for the quantification of temocillin.

Summary: By studying angiolipoma specimens, we found that the formation of blood vessels in angiolipoma involves intussusceptive angiogenesis (IA), in which thrombi play a role. The folding structures formed by thrombus fragments eventually transform into extracellular matrix and establish connections with endothelial cells and pericytes. Thrombi also contribute to the arrangement of folds and pillars.
