Summary: The extensive use of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics has raised global concerns about environmental issues, but biodegradable plastics are emerging as a green alternative. Biodegradable plastics have advantageous properties such as renewability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Some biodegradable plastics can be recycled in existing recycling streams and degrade in controlled environments.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the dominant method for assessing the environmental impact of products or services, but it is labor and time intensive. This study aims to enhance the practicality of LCA for complex products by identifying methods and tools. Five approaches were identified, including the parametric approach, modular approach, automation, aggregation/grouping, and screening, each with their advantages and disadvantages. Automated calculation of results and generation of life cycle inventory (LCI) data show potential for simplification. Additionally, further research is needed to explore automated data collection using sensors and artificial intelligence interpretation.

Summary: The study discusses the potential benefits of implementing industrial symbiosis in agriculture and horticulture through a detailed case study of an Eco-Industrial Park (EIP) in British Columbia, Canada. By linking dairy farming, greenhouse cultivation, and mushroom growing through anaerobic digestion of dairy manure, the activities are able to reduce environmental impacts, such as non-renewable energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient management issues, by 50%-90%.

Summary: This study develops a method to evaluate the cumulative environmental impacts of BMPs and introduces and calculates food's environmental footprint (FEF) for accounting the total environmental damages per nutrition production. Results show that BMPs can decrease pollution loads and health risks, but may have an impact on nutrition production.

Summary: This study is the first comprehensive life cycle assessment of RED technology, which reveals that under theoretical conditions, the environmental impacts of RED can be comparable to, or even lower than, established renewable energy technologies. However, RED may have a higher likelihood of causing eutrophication, ecotoxicity, and carcinogenic impacts compared to other technologies, suggesting further research and improvements are necessary.

Summary: The transition to sustainability and the circular economy is a response to environmental impacts and the need to improve the linear production and consumption model. Biowaste refineries are gaining popularity as an alternative to petroleum refineries. Biowaste is an important source for developing bioproducts and biofuels, and effective environmental management systems are crucial for a circular economy. Bioplastics made from renewable or recycled materials can contribute to more sustainable plastic life cycles. Regulation and financial incentives are needed to scale up bioplastic production for a truly sustainable impact.

Summary: This study assesses the association between web-based Google hospital quality ratings and expert HCSR, as well as the changes following the revision of the CMS rating system. The results show that Google star ratings are associated with overall HCSR ratings but not with clinical components that require medical expertise. The revised CMS rating system improves the inconsistencies between Google star ratings and quality component scores of HCSR.

Summary: The study shows that key drivers of innovation are common across different types of counties, but their marginal effects vary by county type. Furthermore, these innovation drivers have significant spatial spillover effects on patent output in neighboring counties. Urban areas have an innovative advantage, but promoting technological diversity and communication infrastructure in rural areas can help mitigate the urban-rural innovation gap.
