The developments into the synthesis of networked rings, and channels generated in crystalline structures of substituted cucurbit[n]uril with metal ions and organic cations are reviewed. Pertinent chemical features and characteristics are discussed in the context of structural design and supramolecular architecture when utilizing substituted cucurbit[n]uril as building blocks.

The Cyclobutanocucurbit[5-8]uril Family: Electronegative Cavities in Contrast to Classical Cucurbituril while the Electropositive Outer Surface Acts as a Crystal Packing Driver

Minghua Chen, Naixia Lv, Weiwei Zhao, Anthony I. Day

Summary: The structural parameters of the cyclobutanoQ[5-8] family were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the importance of electropositive cyclobutano methylene protons in forming crystal packing arrangements. The electrostatic potential maps confirmed the electropositive nature of the cyclobutano CH2 and also showed that the cavities are electronegative, distinguishing them from classical Q[5-8] structures which are near neutral.

Summary: Tetrahydrothiophenocucurbit[5]uril was chemically modified with thioether functionality and further transformed into the acetoxy derivative. In the presence of tetrahydrothiophenocucurbit[6]uril, nanoparticles of Au and Ag formed chains that grew in length over time.

Summary: This study investigates the physico-chemical properties and antitumor activity of cucurbit[7]uril and cinnamaldehyde inclusion complexes. The complexes are characterized for their stoichiometry, formation constant, particle size, and morphology. The study suggests potential 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometries of the inclusion complexes, and their binding orientation. The complexes exhibit enhanced aqueous solubility and show antitumor activity against breast cancer and glioblastoma cell lines.
