Summary: This study aimed to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and determinants of apparent treatment-resistant hypertension (aTRH) in a large population of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Prevalence rates of hypertension and aTRH were determined using pre- and post-dialysis blood pressure criteria. The results showed that aTRH in ESKD HD patients appears to be multifactorial, influenced by patient-related factors rather than dialysis-related factors.

Summary: This study demonstrated a negative association between nut consumption and MetS risk, especially walnuts and pistachios could reduce the risk of MetS. Among adults, consuming nuts higher than the median and engaging in moderate to high physical activity levels significantly decreased the risk of MetS. Non-smokers were more likely to reduce their risk of MetS, and individuals with higher education levels also showed a tendency to lower their risk of MetS.

Summary: This study analyzed the survival rate of Hurthle cell carcinoma using population-level data and found significant associations between age, gender, race, ethnicity, household income, tumor grade and stage, and the survival rate of Hurthle cell carcinoma. Surgical treatment had a positive impact on patients' survival, but the extent of surgery did not affect the survival rate.

Summary: This study used a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) design based on summary-level data to assess the causal effect of lifestyle factors, metabolic factors, and socioeconomic status on the risk of female pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The results showed that waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), WHR adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI), and education attainment have a causal association with POP.

Summary: The study analyzed the associations between individual characteristics and social context with mental distress symptoms in the Brazilian population. The results showed that young and middle-aged individuals, low education, women, absence of partner, smokers or former smokers were at highest risk for depressive thoughts, while belonging to classes D-E and living in states with lower expected years of schooling were protective factors. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening psychosocial care targeted at vulnerable groups.

Summary: Globally, around 5% of adults suffer from depressive disorder. This study examined the association between sociodemographic factors and depression using data from a national survey in Australia. The findings showed that depression is more prevalent among younger individuals, females, and those with lower socioeconomic status in the Australian population. Appropriate intervention programs should be implemented for this specific group.

Summary: This study analyzed patterns of antihypertensive drug use among new users in a Southern European population, identifying factors that influence persistence. The results showed that overall persistence with antihypertensive therapy was poor and influenced by sex, age, and type of therapy. Fixed combinations were found to be effective for initial therapy, especially for patients at higher risk of discontinuation.

Summary: This study aimed to report the incidence of age-related changes in drusen volume detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) over a span of 6 years and their systemic and ocular associations. The results showed that the incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) detected at 6 years was low. Drusen volume in the macular region either decreased, remained stable, or increased over the 6-year period. Older age, smoking, and chronic kidney disease were associated with decreased drusen volume, while older age and hypertension were associated with increased drusen volume.

Summary: Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) parameters from both the retinal and choroidal microvasculature can be used to detect the presence and severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Choriocapillaris parameters show better discrimination between non-diabetic and diabetic without DR groups. Evaluating both retinal and choroidal microvasculature significantly improves the detection of diabetic retinopathy.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive factors for myopic macular degeneration (MMD) and progression in adults with myopia. The study found that in adults without MMD, tessellated fundus, age, spherical equivalent (SE), and axial length (AL) were good predictors for incident MMD. In adults with MMD, older age, more severe myopia, and longer AL were independent risk factors for progression.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors influencing myopia stabilisation in Singapore. The longitudinal natural history of 424 myopic participants from 1999 to 2022 was evaluated, and it was found that 82.3% of people had stabilisation of myopia within 10 years. The study also found that males and non-Chinese ethnicities were more likely to achieve myopia stabilisation.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between genetic susceptibility to AMD and retinal thickness, finding that certain genetic variants were associated with thinner retinal layers, particularly the photoreceptor layers. These findings suggest that retinal thickness could serve as a potential risk marker for prodromal AMD, highlighting the importance of considering topographic variation.
