The main objective of this study was to analyse the distance covered and the activity profile that players presented at the FIFA World Cup in 2010. Complementarily, the distance covered by each team within the same competition was analysed. For the purposes of this study 443 players were analysed, of which 35 were goalkeepers, 84 were external defenders, 77 were central defenders, 182 were midfielders, and 65 were forwards. Afterwards, a thorough analysis was performed on 16 teams that reached the group stage, 8 teams that achieved the round of 16, 4 teams that reached the quarter-finals, and 4 teams that qualified for the semi-finals and finals. A comparison of the mean distance covered per minute among the playing positions showed statistically significant differences (F(4,438) = 559.283; p. 0.001; 2 = 0.836; Power = 1.00). A comparison of the activity time among tactical positions also resulted in statistically significant differences, specifically, low activity (F(4,183.371) = 1476.844; p < 0.001; 2 = 0.742; Power = 1.00), medium activity (F(4,183.370) = 1408.106; p < 0.001; 2 = 0.731; Power = 1.00), and high activity (F(4,182.861) = 1152.508; p < 0.001; 2 = 0.703; Power = 1.00). Comparing the mean distance covered by teams, differences that are not statistically significant were observed (F(3,9.651) = 4.337; p < 0.035; 2 = 0.206; Power = 0.541). In conclusion, the tactical positions of the players and their specific tasks influence the activity profile and physical demands during a match.

Relationship between cognitive functioning and physical fitness in regard to age and sex

Francisco Tomas Gonzalez-Fernandez, Gabriel Delgado-Garcia, Jesus Siquier Coll, Ana Filipa Silva, Hadi Nobari, Filipe Manuel Clemente

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationships among physical cognitive ability, academic performance, and physical fitness regarding age and sex. The study included 187 students (53.48% male, 46.52% female) aged between 9 and 15 years old (M = 11.97, SD = 1.99) from a town in Jaen, Andalusia, Spain. The results showed a significant relationship between physical fitness, attention, and concentration. There were differences in cognitive functioning scores between sexes and age categories, with girls and older students performing better.

NR5G-SAM: A SLAM Framework for Field Robot Applications Based on 5G New Radio

Panagiotis T. Karfakis, Micael S. Couceiro, David Portugal

Summary: In this study, a cellular SLAM framework based on 5G signals and inertial measurements is proposed for mobile robot localization. The method outputs the robot's pose based on RSSI measurements and generates a radio signal map for correction. The results show that 5G positioning can provide increased robustness in outdoor environments and assist in robot localization when LiDAR methods fail and GNSS data is unreliable.

Acute effect of moderate and high-intensity interval exercises on asprosin and BDNF levels in inactive normal weight and obese individuals

Halil Ibrahim Ceylan, Mehmet Ertugrul Oztuerk, Deniz Oztuerk, Ana Filipa Silva, Mevluet Albayrak, Ozcan Saygin, Ozguer Eken, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Hadi Nobari

Summary: This study aimed to examine the acute effects of moderate-intensity aerobic and high-intensity interval exercise protocols on Asprosin and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) levels in inactive normal weight and obese individuals. The results showed that serum asprosin was higher and BDNF was lower in the obese group compared to the normal weight group. Both moderate aerobic exercise and high-intensity interval exercise significantly decreased asprosin levels in both groups. The obese group showed a significant increase in BDNF levels after high-intensity interval exercise. Acute exercises of different intensities have important effects on appetite regulation hormones, particularly in the obese group.

Comparison of the neuromuscular response to three different Turkish, semi-professional football training sessions typically used within the tactical periodization training model

Joel M. Garrett, Cedric Leduc, Zeki Akyildiz, Daniel J. van den Hoek, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Mehmet Yildiz, Hadi Nobari

Summary: This study investigated the effects of three typical football training sessions on neuromuscular responses and examined the reliability of peak speed (PS) measured during a submaximal running test (SRT) in identifying neuromuscular fatigue (NMF) status. The results showed a significant decrease in all variables after the training sessions. The external load variables of each football session differed significantly. The study also demonstrated that PS can be a reliable measure for monitoring NMF status.

Comparison of external load measures per minute based on match seasonal periods and playing positions of a soccer Turkish super league team

Zeki Akyildiz, Yilmaz Yuksel, Yasar Birgonul, Halil Ibrahim Ceylan, Rafael Oliveira, Erhan Cene, Coskun Parim, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Hadi Nobari

Summary: This study compared the external match load of a Turkish Super League team considering different playing positions and in-season periods by observing 29 official matches. The findings showed that defenders consistently displayed the lowest values in all external load measures during matches compared to other positions. Midfielders demonstrated a higher activity profile during the initial and middle stages of the season with a slight tendency to decrease load towards the end of the season.

Endurance Performance Adaptations between SSG and HIIT in Soccer Players: A Meta-analysis

Filipe Manuel Clemente, Jason Moran, Rodrigo Ramirez-Campillo, Marco Beato, Jose Afonso

Summary: This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to compare the endurance performance adaptations induced by running-based high-intensity interval training (HIIT), small-sided games (SSGs), and combined HIIT+SSGs in male and female youth and adult soccer players. The findings suggest similar effects induced by both SSG and HIIT on improving endurance performance and VO2max.

Using machine learning to determine the positions of professional soccer players in terms of biomechanical variables

Fatma Hilal Yagin, Uday C. H. Hasan, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Ozgur Eken, Georgian Badicu, Mehmet Gulu

Summary: This study used machine learning to predict professional soccer players' positions based on specific locomotor demands. Data from 20 male professional soccer players from the same team were tracked using a global navigation satellite system. Four predictive models were created using different algorithms and evaluated using performance measures. The results showed that the random forest model achieved perfect accuracy, and running distance, total distance, and player load were identified as the most important factors in predicting player positions. This machine learning approach can help reduce false alarms and player mispositioning.

The associations between training and match demands of male professional football players over a season

Rui Miguel Silva, Filipe Manuel Clemente, Hadi Nobari, Georgian Badicu, Ana Filipa Silva, Jose Maria Cancela-Carral

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the differences in training:match load ratios between positions and examine the relationship between weekly training and match demands in male professional football players. A cohort study lasting 43 weeks was conducted with 19 players using GPS units. The study found significant position differences in decelerations and moderate correlations between weekly training and match demands and mean training intensity and match demands. However, these correlations are too weak to suggest a cause-and-effect relationship.
