Summary: The study evaluated the ability of the LACE index to identify children at risk of frequent readmissions, finding that children with a LACE index score greater than 4 have a higher risk of readmissions. The LACE index can be used in healthcare services to target individuals at risk and reduce the likelihood of readmissions.

Summary: This systematic review and narrative synthesis assessed the impact of single rooms versus multioccupancy accommodation on inpatient healthcare outcomes and processes. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the two accommodation types in terms of clinical outcomes, except for critically ill patients, particularly those in neonatal intensive care units, who may benefit from single rooms. Most patients preferred single rooms for privacy, while some preferred shared accommodation to avoid loneliness.

Summary: Measuring staff perspectives on patient safety culture is important for identifying areas of concern in healthcare. This study conducted psychometric evaluation of HSOPSC in Bosnia and Herzegovina and found that the adapted HSOPSC-BiH showed better model fit compared to the original survey, with excellent internal consistency and construct validity. The HSOPSC-BiH is recommended for assessing PSC in BiH and formulating strategies to improve patient safety.

Summary: The Master recession curve (MRC) is widely used to estimate the catchment storage-discharge relationship and predict low flows. However, the variability of recession processes among events makes it difficult to parameterize the recession processes. In this study, a probabilistic approach called the Parameterized Binning-percentile Method (PBM) is proposed to construct MRCs based on recession analysis. The PBM is validated and found to be more accurate in capturing the distribution of recession rate compared to traditional deterministic methods.

Summary: By analyzing helpline data, researchers found that during the COVID-19 crisis, there was a shift in mental health concerns among the public, with fears of infection, loneliness, and health issues becoming more prevalent. The data also indicated that issues directly related to the pandemic seemed to replace rather than exacerbate underlying anxieties.

Summary: This study found that early hospital readmission predicts increased short-, medium- and long-term mortality post-discharge in adults aged 18 to 107 years, independent of underlying presenting conditions, length of stay, age, and sex. Further research focusing on safe discharge and follow-up patient care may help reduce preventable readmissions and post-discharge mortality.

Summary: Tilapia production in most Southern African countries has been low, with Zambia experiencing significant growth in recent years. Economic factors, choice of tilapia species, and production system are identified as key factors affecting production in the region. The lack of profitability due to cheaper wild caught and imported tilapia is identified as the overriding factor affecting tilapia aquaculture production in Southern Africa.

Summary: Federal hospital safety-net subsidy programs have poor target efficiency, leading to inaccurate allocation of funds. The study finds that Medicaid expansion increases the participation of non-safety-net hospitals in subsidy programs, while Medicaid contraction results in the opposite outcome.

Summary: Improvements to freshwater quality can lead to various benefits, including recreational activities, biodiversity preservation, and enhanced water quality. However, the economic valuation of these benefits has not progressed as much as the valuation of air quality benefits, affecting water policy. Recent advancements in data sources, modeling techniques, and stated preference survey methods have improved estimates of the economic value of water quality improvements.

Summary: This qualitative study explores the motivations behind hospital leaders in the USA for collecting patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). The findings indicate that hospital leaders believe collecting PROMs is the right thing to do and is supported by the culture of their institution. They view PROMs as a tool to demonstrate the value of their services to payors and patients, with financial incentives being a weaker motivator. The study highlights the importance of understanding why hospital leaders invest in PROMs in order to understand their role in the US healthcare system.

Summary: Preventing chronic diseases is crucial in medical care. Physicians prevent chronic diseases by monitoring risk factors and prescribing necessary medication. The optimal monitoring policy depends on the patient's risk factors and demographics. This study proposes a finite horizon and finite-state Markov decision process to define monitoring policies, using stochastic models based on longitudinal observational data from electronic health records. The research investigates policies for cholesterol-lowering medication and the influence of gender and race on optimal monitoring policies.

Summary: This cohort study using pooled data from 6 cohort studies conducted from 1971 to 2019 found that incident myocardial infarction (MI) was not associated with a decrease in global cognition, memory, or executive function at the time of the event compared with no MI, but was associated with faster declines in these cognitive functions over time. These findings suggest that prevention of MI may be important for long-term brain health.

Summary: This study examined the impact of individual clinician authority on the implementation success of an EHR DOAC Dashboard for safe medication prescribing. The results showed that a high level of individual clinician authority was associated with key facilitators for effective use of the DOAC Dashboard, while a lack of individual authority was often associated with barriers to effective use.
