Summary: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in immunity and differentiation/proliferation processes, and it is potentially associated with thyroid cancer. This study systematically reviewed publications on the association between vitamin D-related gene variants and thyroid cancer. Results were inconclusive, and further validation is required.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of PEG IFN-α2b with SOC in treating moderate COVID-19, showing a significant clinical improvement on day 15 likely due to faster viral reduction compared to SOC. Subjects in the PEG IFN-α2b plus SOC group had a higher rate of negative RT-PCR results on day 7 and day 14 compared to the SOC group.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the intensity of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) flares during antiviral therapy and the decline in hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) level. The results showed that more severe flares were associated with a faster decline in HBsAg. These findings are important for evaluating the response to hepatitis B virus therapies.

Summary: This study investigates the association between genetic variations within vitamin D receptor (VDR) and susceptibility to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Egyptian patients with chronic HCV infection. It finds that certain gene mutations are associated with HCC progression and are also related to liver cirrhosis induced by HCV infection. The results suggest that VDR polymorphisms may be potential determinants for HCC susceptibility in Egyptian HCV patients.

Summary: Vitamin D signaling plays a crucial role in maintaining calcium balance for bone health and has various functions in different tissues. Disturbances in vitamin D signaling are associated with numerous diseases. This review focuses on the identification of bioactivating enzymes and their genes involved in the production of active vitamin D metabolites. It evaluates species- and tissue-specific expression, enzyme kinetics, substrate specificity, and the consequences of gene mutations. The roles of different vitamin D receptors and alternative bioactivation pathways are also discussed. Although significant progress has been made in understanding vitamin D bioactivation enzymes, further research is needed to fully comprehend the pleiotropic effects and the mechanisms of enzymatic activation in vitamin D-induced responses.

Summary: The study retrospectively collected clinical data of 24 cases of vitamin D-dependent rickets type 1A, and found that partial loss-of-function variation may be associated with a milder disease phenotype. Patients had good clinical, biochemical, and radiological outcomes after treatment, but adherence is crucial to prevent complications.

Summary: This study found that newly developed low calcemic vitamin D analogs (an1,25Ds) can be used as anticancer agents in ovarian cancer cells, with PRI-5202 showing the best efficacy. The potency of these analogs and their ability to increase CYP24A1 expression in HGSOC cell lines were dependent on the cell line and chemical structure, suggesting that further optimization of the analogs' structure may lead to new treatment options for ovarian cancer.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the combined effect of maternal and neonatal VDBP polymorphism heterogeneity in conjunction with different maternal and neonatal 25(OH)D cutoffs on neonatal anthropometric profile at birth. The findings suggest a potential role for neonatal VDBP genotypes rs2298850 and rs4588, in conjunction with specific neonatal 25(OH)D cutoffs, in affecting neonatal growth and development. However, no significant effects were observed for maternal VDBP polymorphisms or maternal 25(OH)D concentrations at birth on neonatal anthropometry.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of prior IFN-alpha therapy on subsequent PD-1 blockade in melanoma patients. The findings showed that prior PEG-IFN-alpha therapy enhanced the efficacy of adjuvant pembrolizumab, reducing recurrence rates and prolonging recurrence-free survival. These results suggest that prior PEG-IFN-alpha treatment could be beneficial in designing combination or sequential immunotherapy for melanoma patients.

Summary: This study found that maternal vitamin D levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms of the vitamin D receptor gene (VDR SNPs) may be associated with the efficacy of antiviral therapy in pregnant women with high hepatitis B viral loads. The study showed that a high percentage of pregnant women with high HBV viral loads had deficient or insufficient vitamin D levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with maternal HBV DNA levels at delivery after TDF therapy. Maternal vitamin D levels, VDR SNPs, and cholesterol levels at delivery were associated with targeted antiviral effects.

Summary: Dysregulation of vitamin D-binding protein has been associated with various pregnancy complications. The effects of VDBP polymorphisms on adipokine profiles in mothers and neonates have not been fully investigated. This study found that VDBP polymorphisms had minimal impact on adiponectin, irisin, and VDBP concentrations at birth under different vitamin D status cut-offs.

Summary: The Weil osteotomy is commonly performed for chronic metatarsalgia, and screw fixation is historically used for metatarsal head refixation. However, this study suggests that screw fixation is not always necessary. Retrospective analysis of 155 patients with 278 Weil osteotomies demonstrated a lower revision rate in patients without screw fixation. Therefore, regular screw fixation after a Weil osteotomy may not be justified based on the available data.

Summary: Heterologous COVID-19 vaccination regimens are an alternative to conventional immunization programs and demonstrate lower reactogenicity and higher neutralizing activity over time compared to homologous vaccination with mRNA. A third dose of an mRNA vaccine is necessary to maintain neutralizing activity against SARS-CoV-2 and variants of concern-adapted versions of the vaccines are desired.

Summary: This prospective non-interventional trial included 82 patients with thromboembolic antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) and assessed the effect of COVID-19 infections and/or COVID-19 vaccinations on antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). The study found no increase in aPL in the total study population, with slight decreases observed for certain antibodies and slight increases observed only in patients with COVID-19 infection and vaccination. The low recurrence rate of thrombotic events in these patients may be attributed to high vaccination rates and effective anticoagulation.

Summary: Although female patients have a lower prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), they seem to have a worse treatment outcome compared with male patients. Both maximum aneurysm diameter and aortic size index (ASI) are important indicators of the risk of AAA rupture, among which ASI has been shown capable of equalizing sex-related anatomical differences.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to observe the quality of posterior composite restorations after more than 23 years of service. A total of 22 patients with 42 restorations underwent two follow-up examinations. Results showed significantly worse scores for six out of seven criteria at the second follow-up evaluation. The study suggests the need for further research with extended follow-up time and regular assessments.

Summary: Background & Aims: This study aimed to investigate the transmission and characteristics of recently acquired HCV infections (RAHCs) over a 10-year period. The majority of RAHC cases were found in HIV-coinfected men who have sex with men (MSM), and internationally connected transmission networks were observed in most patients. Spontaneous clearance rates were low, and reinfection rates increased in a subset of MSM patients with high-risk behavior.
