Summary: The soil-air partition coefficients (KSA) of PBDEs and OPFRs were measured using a solid-phase fugacity meter, and the effects of temperature and relative humidity on KSA values were analyzed. An inverse relationship was found between temperature/RH and KSA values for both PBDEs and OPFRs. The study also found a significant correlation between log KSA and log KOA. The experimental KSA values differed greatly from the predicted values based on KOA. This study provides a better understanding of the behavior and fate of PBDEs and OPFRs in soil-air systems.

Summary: This study found that PBDEs in microplastics can leach upon ingestion, but the leaching kinetics of inherent contaminants from ingested microplastics are poorly understood. Although the bioaccumulation of PBDEs in fish oil can be accelerated in the gastrointestinal tract, the steady-state concentrations of PBDEs in cod tissue lipid through ingestion of microplastics were found to be below the lower end of the global PBDE concentration, suggesting that ingestion of microplastics by organisms remains a negligible pathway.

Summary: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a type of brominated flame-retardants (BFRs) that are mainly introduced to the human body through dietary intake. This review discusses recent studies conducted from 2012 to 2022, which show a general trend of decreasing levels of PBDEs in food and consequently, a decrease in dietary intake. The lack of tolerable daily intakes of PBDEs remains a challenge for assessing the human health risks associated with these compounds.

Summary: Improper disposal of e-waste can lead to environmental pollution and human health risks due to the release of high concentrations of PBDEs. However, recycling waste electronic plastics using solvent processes can help reduce these risks. This study focused on the recycling of HIPS from waste TV sets using d-limonene and n-propanol as solvent and precipitant, respectively. The research investigated the relationship between precipitation conditions and the size of precipitate particles, as well as the effect of these conditions on the removal percentage of PBDEs. The results showed that specific conditions, such as lower HIPS concentration, lower precipitation temperature, higher mass ratio of n-propanol to HIPS solution, and greater stirring speed, can promote the formation of smaller and more uniform precipitate particles, thereby improving the removal percentage of PBDEs.

Summary: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly found in the environment due to the use of brominated flame retardants. This study detected PBDEs in air, dust, and particulate matter samples from bedrooms in Hangzhou, indicating wide occurrence of PBDE pollution in bedrooms. The concentration of PBDEs was highest in dust, followed by air and particulate matter. The main source of PBDEs in residential environments was identified as mattresses, curtains, and mattresses combined with curtains. The study also found that infants had the highest daily exposure dose of PBDEs in the air and particulate matter phases.

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Summary: Co/NC/PAC electrode was prepared by compounding ZIF-67 with powder-activated carbon for the electrocatalytic treatment of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. The degradation efficiency of the four compounds reached 90.2-93.7% under optimal conditions, and the degradation order was pyridazine < pyrimidine < pyrazine < pyridine.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.

Deterministic processes dominate the assembly of mesopelagic plastisphere microbial communities, while stochastic processes shape the assembly of bathypelagic microbial communities. The relationships between microorganisms in the mesopelagic layer are more complex and stable, with Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota playing important roles.

Summary: Based on the efficiency of catalytic ozonation techniques in enhancing sludge dewaterability, this study investigated its effectiveness in simultaneous reduction of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. The results showed that catalytic ozonation conditioning changed the distribution of antibiotics and achieved high degradation rates. It also significantly reduced the abundance of ARGs, inhibited horizontal gene transfer, and decreased the signal transduction of typical ARGs host bacteria.

Summary: This study utilized Mo powder and STPP to enhance the performance of the sodium percarbonate system in pollutant degradation. The presence of Mo and STPP resulted in a higher degradation rate of the model pollutant SMX, with low oxidant consumption. The system generated multiple active species through a series of chain reactions at different pH values, exhibiting excellent performance towards electron-rich pollutants. Furthermore, Mo demonstrated excellent stability and reusability.
