Kanpur city has large number of small-scale industries (SSIs), primarily comprising of textile and leather industries. This study inventorises the presence of heavy metals in the samples collected from Panki and Jajmau Industrial Areas of Kanpur city. The bulk concentration of heavy metals found in solid waste samples was Fe as 1885 and 2340 mg/kg, Mn 173 and 445 mg/kg, Zn 233 and 132 mg/kg, Cu 20 and 28 mg/kg, Cd 1.4 and 1.1 mg/kg, Ni 26 and 397 mg/kg, Pb 107 and 19 mg/kg, Cr 1323 and 734 mg/kg, respectively. Heavy metal concentration was also found to be high in soil and road dust samples viz. Ni and Pb were in higher concentration in few samples, whereas Cr was found in higher concentration in all samples than the recommended values of USEPA and specifications for compost quality contained in the Indian Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules. 2000. The heavy metal pollution so detected is indicative of contamination in ground and surface water and food chain. This raises concerns pertaining to adverse consequences to environment and human health. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Efficiency of a pilot hybrid wastewater treatment system comprising activated sludge and constructed wetlands planted with Canna lily and Cyperus papyrus

Euis Nurul Hidayah, Okik Hendriyanto Cahyonugroho, Ram Babu Pachwarya, A. L. Ramanathan

Summary: The study compared the performance of three domestic wastewater treatment systems, showing that AS-CWC had better removal of BOD, PO43- and TSS compared to AS and AS-CWP. Although AS-CWC and AS-CWP showed similar removal of NH4+-N and NO3--N, with AS having the highest increase in TOC and AS-CWP the lowest. Integration of constructed wetlands with primary treatment can improve effluent quality and reduce organic matter.

Om Kumar, A. L. Ramanathan, Jostein Bakke, B. S. Kotlia, J. P. Shrivastava, Pankaj Kumar, Rajveer Sharma, Pramod Kumar

Summary: This paper reviews Late Quaternary climatic changes and glacier variability in the Himalaya and East Africa, focusing on the role of Indian Summer Monsoon, East African monsoon, and Westerlies monsoons. The study suggests that the Westerlies monsoon significantly contributed to the Northwestern Himalaya, while the ISM controlled glacier fluctuations in the Western Himalaya during the Late Quaternary.

Assessing Sediment Pulse during an Extreme Hydrological Event in the Alaknanda Basin, Northwestern Himalaya, India

Rahul Devrani, Vimal Singh, Manish Mehta, A. L. Ramanathan

Summary: In 2013, an extreme hydrological event in the Northwestern Himalaya caused high sediment mobilisation in the upper Ganga Basin, impacting human populations, infrastructure, and ecology in the Kedarnath and Srinagar valleys. Due to limited monitoring stations and data, understanding of sediment movement mechanisms in the Himalayan river basins remains poor, highlighting the need for detailed studies during extreme events.

Triple Water Vapour-Isotopologues Record from Chhota Shigri, Western Himalaya, India: A Unified Interpretation based on δ17O, δ18O, δD and Comparison to Meteorological Parameters

S. Ranjan, AL. Ramanathan, Tirumalesh Keesari, Virendra B. Singh, Naveen Kumar, Manish Pandey, Markus C. Leuenberger

Summary: This study aims to investigate the source and transportation of water vapour in the western Himalayan region using water vapour stable isotopes and air mass trajectory diagnostics. Results show significant diurnal variations in water vapour isotopes in the Chhota Shigri region, influenced by meteorological parameters and exhibiting differences compared to nearby regions. The findings demonstrate the impact of local moisture recycling on isotopic composition and highlight the importance of considering evaporative conditions in moisture uptake and loss.

Annual and seasonal glaciological mass balance of Patsio Glacier, western Himalaya (India) from 2010 to 2017

Thupstan Angchuk, Alagappan Ramanathan, I. M. Bahuguna, Arindan Mandal, Mohd Soheb, Virendra Bahadur Singh, Somdutta Mishra, Sarvagya Vatsal

Summary: Improving knowledge of Himalayan glaciers mass balance is crucial for understanding current and past atmospheric variations, as well as future water availability. The study of Patsio Glacier in the western Himalayas revealed a cumulative mass balance over seven years with consistent winter mass balance values, showing a positive correlation with annual and winter precipitation in the region. Monitoring seasonal mass balance and considering non-climatic parameters like debris and aspect are important for accurate estimation of glacier-wide mass balance.

An 11-year record of wintertime snow-surface energy balance and sublimation at 4863 m a.s.l. on the Chhota Shigri Glacier moraine (western Himalaya, India)

Arindan Mandal, Thupstan Angchuk, Mohd Farooq Azam, Alagappan Ramanathan, Patrick Wagnon, Mohd Soheb, Chetan Singh

Summary: This study analysed a meteorological dataset from a weather station located in the western Himalayas to investigate the drivers of surface energy balance (SEB) at the glacier/snow surface. The results showed that cloud cover plays a crucial role in limiting short-wave radiation and turbulent heat flux, thereby reducing snow sublimation. Turbulent latent heat flux was the dominant component of SEB during winter, and cloud cover modulated the near-surface boundary layer conditions, affecting the favourable conditions for turbulent latent heat flux.

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.
