In this study, changes in viability, biomass production, essential oil yield and essential oil composition of Mentha spicata L (spearmint) exposed to olive mill wastewater (OMW) were investigated. Spearmint cuttings were sensitive to OMW and, after 6 h of incubation in raw or diluted OMW, their viability was null. The short contact of raw OMW with mint cuttings caused an irreversible damage in rhizogenesis and shoots development. Roots were more sensitive to phytotoxicity than shoots. In a field essay, spearmint showed a good capability to recover when OMW was spread at 81 m(-2) at the vegetative phase of growth (45 days after plantation). At this dose, a slight increase of mostly of the mint essential oil constituents was obtained. When the dose applied was 161 m(-2), phytotoxicity was manifested by a high reduction of biomass and essential oil yield. The essential oil composition was also affected and a disappearance of many of mint essential oil constituents was observed with an increase of 59% for carvone, the major compound of spearmint essential oil. As far as we know, this is the first report on the effect of field application of OMW on an aromatic plant essential oil yield and composition. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Phytopythium vexans Associated with Apple and Pear Decline in the Saiss Plain of Morocco

Salma Jabiri, Chaimaa Bahra, Dustin MacLean, Nabil Radouane, Essaid Ait Barka, Mohamed Bendriss Amraoui, Rachid Lahlali

Summary: A survey in the Saiss plain of Morocco revealed that 35 out of 50 apple and pear orchards were infested with the pathogen Phytopythium vexans causing decline disease. Disease occurrence and prevalence varied depending on location, irrigation method, and soil type, with the disease being most prevalent in wild apple rootstocks, sandy-clay soil, and drip water irrigation. Effective irrigation systems and good sanitation practices can help prevent the onset of this disease, which may be strongly influenced by irrigation mode and soil type.

Trace elements in Foodstuffs from the Mediterranean Basin-Occurrence, Risk Assessment, Regulations, and Prevention strategies: A review

Mourad El Youssfi, Aicha Sifou, Rachid Ben Aakame, Naima Mahnine, Said Arsalane, Mohammed Halim, Abdelaziz Laghzizil, Abdellah Zinedine

Summary: Trace elements (TEs) are naturally occurring compounds in the earth's crust and living organisms, but human activities can increase their levels in the environment and potentially harm human health through ingestion of contaminated food. This review discusses the occurrence of TEs in food from Mediterranean countries, analytical methods, and international regulations. The study finds high levels of TEs contamination in vegetables and fish from some Mediterranean countries, with lead and cadmium being particularly abundant. Geographical variations in TE contamination and a greater risk in developing countries are observed. Regular monitoring of toxic element levels in food is necessary for consumer protection.

Comparative Study of Ochratoxin A Exposure through the Intake of Cereal Products in Two Climatic Moroccan Regions

Ahmed Tabarani, Abdellah Zinedine, Joao Miguel Rocha, Moez Sanaa, El Hassane Abdennebi

Summary: The study compares ochratoxin A (OTA) exposure through the intake of three cereal derivative products in two different climatic regions in Morocco. Results show a significant difference in OTA exposure between the littoral and continental regions. Cereal derivatives constitute an important vector of OTA exposure and exceed toxicological reference values among large consumers in the littoral region, suggesting the need to reconsider the maximum regulatory limit set for OTA in cereal derivatives by Moroccan authorities.

Particulate matter-induced metabolic recoding of epigenetics in macrophages drives pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.

Summary: This study measured the levels of phthalate metabolites in breast milk collected from mothers in southern China. The results showed that phthalates are still prevalent in the region, and breastfeeding contributes to phthalate intake in infants. However, the levels detected do not pose significant health risks to infants based on dietary exposure. Summary: Ocean depth affects microbial diversity, composition, and co-occurrence patterns of microplastic microbial communities. Deterministic processes dominate the assembly of mesopelagic plastisphere microbial communities, while stochastic processes shape the assembly of bathypelagic microbial communities. The relationships between microorganisms in the mesopelagic layer are more complex and stable, with Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota playing important roles.
