Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of functional neurological disorder (FND) in patients with chronic pain. The results showed that among 190 chronic pain patients, 32 (17%) had a diagnosis of FND and an additional 11 (6%) had undiagnosed neurological symptoms. Chronic pain patients with comorbid FND were more likely to have chronic primary pain, widespread chronic primary pain, and depression. However, there were no significant differences in medication prescription or pain outcome between patients with and without FND.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between pain catastrophizing and comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD) and chronic pain (CP). The results showed that pain catastrophizing and anxiety were more severe in the comorbidity group compared to the MDD-only group and healthy control group. Pain catastrophizing and anxiety may potentially impact the comorbidity of depression and chronic pain.

Summary: Chronic pain is often accompanied by psychological comorbidity, and the lack of clear pathophysiological factors and valid biomarkers makes it difficult to diagnose. In this study, inflammatory blood biomarkers were found to be associated with psychological comorbidity, but not with pain intensity in a chronic pain population. Specific inflammatory proteins were identified that may be related to anxiety and depression.

Summary: Over the 9-year period, there were 28.6 million visits for chronic musculoskeletal pain by individuals under 25 years old, with an average of 3.2 million visits per year. Nonopioid medications were the most common treatment, prescribed in 38.5% to 48.8% of visits across all age groups. Opioids were rarely prescribed for children and adolescents, but were used in 23% of visits among young adults aged 18-24.

Summary: Pain disorders and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) often coexist in clinical settings, potentially due to deficits in reward processing. Environmental events in conjunction with reward impairment diathesis may worsen symptoms, creating a negative feedback loop.

Summary: Our study did not find evidence of low-grade systemic inflammation in chronic pelvic pain. Higher TNF alpha levels were associated with higher fatigue ratings, while higher systemic GM-CSF levels predicted more widespread pain. Our findings suggest a potentially protective role of IL-8 with regard to the widespreadness of pain in the body, at least for women.

Summary: This study aims to identify the presence of central sensitisation in patients with chronic low back pain radiating to the leg, and to determine its association with the effect of selective nerve root blocks and compare outcomes with healthy volunteers. The primary study parameters are quantitative sensory testing (QST) and the Central Sensitisation Inventory. The results of this study will be disseminated through publications and conferences.

Summary: This study examined the impact of transdiagnostic psychosocial factors such as pain-related anxiety, anxiety sensitivity, emotion dysregulation, and distress tolerance on chronic pain and opioid outcomes. The results indicate that these factors have independent effects on pain and opioid outcomes, with pain-related anxiety most strongly related to pain intensity and interference, anxiety sensitivity related to opioid misuse, and emotion dysregulation related to all studied criterion variables.

Summary: Chronic pain and sleep disorders are common problems that seriously affect patients' quality of life, but there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of this comorbidity. This review article summarizes the prevalence of comorbid sleep disorders in chronic pain patients, sleep detection methods, sleep characterization in chronic pain, the impact of sleep disorders on chronic pain, and current therapies. The neurochemical mechanisms underlying the comorbidity of chronic pain with sleep disorders are still limited.

Summary: This scoping review identified a limited number of high-quality studies on non-pharmacological interventions for older adults with comorbid conditions and chronic pain in community settings. The studies lacked quantification and specific reporting of comorbidity indices and burden, and none of them measured changes in participant comorbidities and burden.

Summary: The study found a bidirectional relationship between chronic pain and depression, with chronic pain increasing the risk of depression, recent suicide attempts, smoking, and painkiller misuse. Individuals with comorbid chronic pain and depression experienced poorer treatment response to antidepressants, especially sertraline, escitalopram, and venlafaxine. Participants taking these medications specifically for chronic pain reported lower benefits compared to those taking them for other indications.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the prevalence of long-term and serious harms of medical cannabis for chronic pain. The results showed that adverse events are common, particularly psychiatric adverse events, among users of medical cannabis for chronic pain. However, serious adverse events and dependence and withdrawal syndrome are less common.

Summary: This study aims to gain a deeper understanding and comparison of the experiences and perceptions of resident family members and nursing home staff regarding the turnover of licensed and unlicensed direct care staff. The findings indicate that both family members and nursing home staff express concerns about turnover and highlight the importance of providing consistent, personalized care and ensuring that staff feel appreciated and supported in order to reduce turnover rates and minimize disruptions in care.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in device-associated infection prevention practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data collected mid-pandemic were used to assess the use of several infection prevention practices and compare them with historical data. The results showed that the use of preventive practices for CLABSI and VAE continued to increase or plateau, while the use of preventive practices for CAUTI decreased.

Summary: This study described best practices in the implementation of multiplex PCR respiratory panels based on expert perspectives, and identified tools for diagnostic stewardship to enhance the usefulness of testing. The survey results showed that multiplex PCR respiratory panels were perceived as supporting accurate diagnoses, more efficient patient care, and improving patient outcomes. Diagnostic stewardship interventions, including structured order sets, restrictions on test ordering, and structured communication of results, were reported as effective measures to enhance the usefulness of testing.

Summary: Through group interviews with emergency responders, factors that affect the treatment of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients were studied, including issues in the areas of structure, process, system, and continuous quality improvement. Rapid implementation interventions or programs include improving prearrival communication between agencies, appointing patient care and logistical leadership on-scene, interstakeholder team training, and providing more standardized feedback to all responder groups to improve outcomes for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients.

Summary: This study assessed the resources and practices of infection prevention and control programs in nursing homes in the United States, specifically related to the prevention of catheter and non-catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The findings showed that nursing homes had some awareness of urinary tract infections and implemented prevention practices, but there were challenges in terms of training and education for infection preventionists, as well as communication between nursing homes and hospitals.

Summary: Using first-principle calculations, the authors observe variations in magnetic anisotropy energy and other magnetic properties for transition metal (TM) doped bismuth monolayer. The Mn-doped bismuthene exhibits half-metallicity with higher magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy energy compared to Fe-doped and Ti-doped systems. The half-metal Mn-Bi can induce half-metallicity in CrI3 through charge transfer, making it the most favorable doped system for spintronic device development in Mn-Bi/CrI3 van der Waals heterostructure.
