Summary: The study found that hs-AFP-L3 is a useful marker for predicting hepatocarcinogenesis in long-term observation of patients with chronic liver disease, especially in cases with low serum AFP levels. Various factors such as platelet count and specific biomarkers were identified as significant contributors to hepatocarcinogenesis.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of biomarkers in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and found that PIVKA-II had better diagnostic ability than AFP or AFP-L3 alone, with the combination of AFP + PIVKA-II significantly improving the diagnostic accuracy of NAFLD-HCC.

Summary: Glycoproteins play important roles in biological functions, and aberrant glycosylation is related to cancers such as liver cancer. AFP-L3, a fucosylated glycan-containing biomarker, has been identified as a potential better marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) due to its high affinity for LCA lectin. This study compares the effectiveness of different lectins in capturing AFP-L3 and suggests the use of LTL lectin to improve the diagnostic sensitivity in HCC patients.

Summary: Pulses are nutritious and versatile ingredients in the food industry, but they also contain anti-nutrients and allergenic agents. This study found that spontaneous fermentation can reduce the levels of these undesirable compounds and degrade proteins and peptides. The most abundant bacteria in fermented lentils were Lactococcus taiwanensis and Pediococcus pentosaceus.

Summary: The disease burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in China is heavy, and early screening of high-risk groups is crucial for improving prognosis and survival. Traditional and new hematological test methods, as well as the role of hematological markers, offer hope for enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of early HCC screening. This consensus provides expert guidance and research progress to improve prevention and control in China.

Summary: This report presents a rare case of hepatic inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) with elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and AFP-L3, resembling hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Clinicians should consider including IPT in the differential diagnosis of hepatic tumors, even when serum markers for HCC are elevated.

Summary: The development of nucleos(t)ide analogues has significantly impacted the natural history of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This study compared HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis patients receiving and not receiving NA therapy, finding associations between factors such as high viral load, diabetes, age, and treatment method with hepatocarcinogenesis and mortality rates.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of antiviral therapy on clinical outcomes in patients with hepatitis C virus infection and mild liver fibrosis, showing that HCV eradication in patients with mild fibrosis reduces the risk of hepatocarcinogenesis and mortality. Furthermore, successful HCV eradication before the age of 50 may result in a prognosis similar to that of the age-matched and sex-matched general population.

Summary: Since its discovery in 1989, the road to a cure for hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been slow, but most patients can now expect to achieve a sustained virological response (SVR). Adverse events are rare or mild, and patients with compensated cirrhosis and other co-morbidities are often eligible for treatment. However, a small number of patients fail to eradicate the virus even after retreatment.

Summary: The Blood Donation Promotion Study Group of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan predicted a blood donation rate of 5.7% in 2025. However, the COVID-19 pandemic may affect the blood donation rate in Japan. This study used data from 75.5 million blood donations from 2006 to 2020 to predict age-specific blood donation rates from 2021 to 2035 using an age-period-cohort model.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence and incidence rates of epilepsy in Japan using nationwide insurance claims data. The results showed that over an 8-year period, a total of 77,312 individuals were diagnosed with epilepsy, resulting in a prevalence rate of 6.0 per 1,000. The incidence rate was 72.1 per 100,000 person-years, with higher rates among females. The highest incidence rates were observed among infants under 12 months and the elderly aged 70-74 years. These findings are important for informing health policies.

Summary: This study used data from the Japanese National Database to predict the number and trend of chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and C virus (HCV) infections from 2015 to 2035. The results show a decrease in the number of chronic infections by 2035, but challenges in controlling hepatitis remain. Improved screening strategies and treatment options are needed.

Summary: This study determined the prevalence and genotype distribution of HBV infection in Cambodia through a systematic review with meta-analysis. The results showed a decrease in HBV infection prevalence in Cambodia, indicating the effectiveness of national hepatitis B immunization, improved clinical hygiene, and the use of disposable devices. However, the estimated HBV prevalence among the general population still remains at an intermediate endemicity level, highlighting the need for population screening, high vaccination coverage, health promotion, and HBV surveillance to meet the WHO 2030 goal.
