One hundred and twenty-nine isolates of Trichosporon jirovecii were isolated from the melanized exoskeleton as well as eyestalks, gills, muscle and haemolymph of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) collected from the River Nile, during summer 2015. Isolates were similar morphologically, biochemically and genetically. Also, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis exhibited no polymorphism among the tested isolates. Virulence factors such as chitinase, protease, lipase activities and biofilm formation were examined. Challenge test, using a representative isolate (Tj_ASU8), proved its pathogenicity against crayfish. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles had a good antifungal activity with a minimum fungicidal concentration of 8 mg/ml. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report for isolation of T. jirovecii from red swamp crayfish, showing melanization, from the River Nile. We assume that infected crayfish may act as a vector for this fungus and can disseminate infection to all susceptible hosts in the vicinity.

Summary: In recent years, mass mortalities in riverine ayu in Japan have been linked to the causative agent Edwardsiella ictaluri. Experimental infection of ayu revealed severe congestion in blood vessels, degenerative and necrotic changes, and positive antigenic staining, providing insights into the pathogenesis of the disease.

Summary: This study identified Contracaecum nematodes as third-stage larvae in Nile perch collected from the Nile River in Egypt. The larvae were found in various locations within the fish's body and showed no correlation with the fish's weight and length. The study employed microscopy and genetic sequencing to describe and confirm the larvae as Contracaecum quadripapillatum.

Summary: The European seabass, a commercially farmed fish in Europe and the most farmed fish in the Mediterranean, is susceptible to copepod infestation, with Lernanthropus kroyeri being a common parasite. In this study, gill filaments of the seabass were found to be infested with L. kroyeri parasites with a prevalence rate of 23%. The parasites were identified and their morphological traits were examined using scanning electron microscopy.

Summary: This study investigated the control of the Carp sprivivirus replication in cells and in common carp by targeting specific genes using RNA interference technology. The results showed that certain siRNAs effectively reduced the virus titer both in vitro and in vivo. In particular, the siRNA-M-271 + L-602 combination significantly reduced the mortality rate in common carp challenged with SVCV.

Ebtsam Sayed Hassan Abdallah, Awatef Hamed Hamouda

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence, morphology, and molecular characteristics of isopodiosis in the European seabass in Egypt. The parasites were mainly found in the branchial cavity and caused destructive damage to the gill lamellae. DNA sequencing confirmed the identification of the parasite, which showed distinct differences from other isopod genospecies. The study highlights the clinical and histopathological effects of this parasite on infected fish.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of benzothiadiazole (Bion(R)) and indigenous rhizobacteria as potential biocontrol agents for managing Fusarium wilt disease of pepper. The results showed that the combined application of Bion(R) and Bacillus subtilis significantly reduced the disease severity and increased the germination rate of pepper seeds. Furthermore, these treatments increased the total phenol contents in treated plants.

Summary: This study investigates the potential use of salicylic acid (SA) and benzoic acid (BA) for controlling the common blight of beans caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap). The application of SA and BA significantly suppressed the growth of the pathogen, reduced disease development, and induced resistance and defense enzymes in the treated bean plants. SA-treated plants showed higher salicylic acid and phenolic content, while BA-treated plants showed higher catalase activity.
