Summary: This study extends the analysis of TRWPs in environmental samples using a density separation and chemical mapping protocol. The identification and characterization of TRWPs are based on physical and elemental surface characteristics, as well as organic surface markers and resistance to heat-induced deformation. The size distribution of TRWPs in environmental samples increases with sample complexity, as determined by the SPA methodologies.

Summary: Exposure to particulate matter, especially during Asian dust events, has been linked to cardiovascular disease. This study in Jeju island, Korea, analyzed PM10 concentrations and air flow trajectories during Asian dust events, highlighting the different contributions of various microenvironments to exposure and evaluating exposure in different age groups.

Summary: This study aimed to bridge the gap between lack of awareness and understanding of how occupant behavior affects indoor air quality (IAQ). An evaluation of IAQ awareness and an investigation of an eco-feedback strategy were conducted. The results showed that occupants were not properly aware of IAQ in their homes, but the eco-feedback strategy successfully promoted behavioral changes and reduced particle concentration during cooking activities.

Summary: This study developed a novel method to estimate the contributions of long-range transport (LRT) and local pollution (LP) to the PM10 concentration in Seoul, finding that the overall contributions to nighttime high-PM10 episodes were approximately 32% and 47% respectively. The contributions varied with seasonal synoptic circulations, with LRT events contributing between 18% and 43% and LP events between 39% and 69% to the PM10 concentration in Seoul.

Summary: This study proposes a conceptual framework to estimate the occurrence and emissions of tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) in the environment. The framework combines a vehicle emission model with a freshwater transport model and demonstrates its effectiveness through a case study. It also suggests management and treatment strategies to reduce TRWP emissions.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of MPs on the thermolytic behavior of NR and finds that the furnace type of a pyrolyzer cannot determine the formation of isoprene and dipentene, while the Curie point type of a pyrolyzer can linearly respond to the mass of NR. Therefore, adopting the Curie point type of a pyrolyzer is a viable option for quantification of TWPs in road dust when the effects of ferromagnetic substance are neutralized.

Summary: This paper compares a road abrasion wear model with full-scale field measurements on recently constructed roads in Sweden to investigate its validity, proposing potential changes for continued use. It concludes that the model overestimates wear and suggests an update, while also briefly investigating the impact on emission predictions by NORTRIP. There are indications that NORTRIP is affected by the abrasion model overestimating the contribution of pavement wear to particle emissions.

Summary: Environmental monitoring data on tire road wear particles are limited due to challenges in quantification. A study on commercially available tires from Australia and Norway found that synthetic rubber content varied significantly among different brands and models, suggesting the need for refinement of the ISO method and large-scale analysis of commercial tire treads.

Summary: In this study, a mathematical model based on the plug flow model and coarse fly ash particles' fragmentation model was developed to describe the behavior and evolution of ash formation and the influence of biomass feeding rate and flue gas cooling rate on ash properties. The model was validated using literature data and was applied to study ash formation characteristics in practical boiler pulverized fuel combustion and SO2 sulfation cases. The results demonstrate that the model can reasonably describe ash formation and the effects of biomass feeding rate and flue gas cooling rate on particle size distributions and elemental compositions of PM10.

Summary: This study quantified the sources of non-exhaust particulate matter traffic emissions in London using highly time-resolved measurements over a 12-month period. The results revealed that brake wear is the primary source of non-exhaust emissions, and the emission factors are influenced by speed and road surface conditions. Further statistical analysis and advanced source apportionment techniques were used to enhance understanding of these important vehicle sources.

Summary: As one of the largest sources of microplastic particle emissions, tire-road wear particle mixtures (TRWPs) pose a potentially high threat to various environmental compartments. Current analytical methods for TRWP can be summarized in two main groups: single-particle-based and bulk-based methods. This review provides an overview of the current analytical methods used for TRWP studies and in particularly quantifications, with focus on methods that have been peer-reviewed and tested for environmental samples.

Summary: Residential wood combustion is a common source of indoor particulate matter, but research on associated exposure risks is limited. The study used a dosimetry model to determine the deposition of inhalable particles in the respiratory tract. Results showed higher indoor doses compared to outdoor, especially in the alveolar-interstitial region.

Summary: The use of eyebrow powders releases airborne particles that are inhaled, with concentrations ranging from 21.2 to 277.3 mu g/m(3) depending on particle fraction and powder type. TiO2 concentrations in PM4 and PM10 samples reached 2.7 mu g/m(3) and 9.3 mu g/m(3) respectively, proportional to the presence of TiO2 in the bulk powder.

Summary: Despite the growing popularity of e-cigarettes, limited epidemiological studies have been conducted to investigate their impact on respiratory health in young adults. This study found that e-cigarette use was more common in male smokers and was associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms and overweight/obesity. However, the small number of exclusive e-cigarette users hindered firm conclusions.
