We studied the ability of domestic cats to distinguish familiarity based on faecal odours. This was evaluated by comparing the sniffing duration of cats' own, familiar, and unfamiliar faeces. We found that (1) sniffing durations differed between unfamiliar faeces and the other types of faeces, (2) sniffing durations of faeces of the same unfamiliar individuals decreased over time, and (3) sniffing durations toward unfamiliar faeces increased after change of donors. These results indicate that domestic cats can distinguish the faecal odours based on familiarity. This ability could be adaptive for domestic cats to maintain their social relationships.

Temporal activity patterns suggesting niche partitioning of sympatric carnivores in Borneo, Malaysia

Summary: The study evaluated the temporal activity patterns of nine carnivore species in Borneo and found high activity overlaps among nocturnal species. Two felid species showed clear temporal niche segregation, while three civet species did not. Broad dietary breadth may compensate for the high temporal niche overlaps among nocturnal species.

How to encourage parents to let children play in nature: Factors affecting parental perception of children's nature play

Mai Van Truong, Miyabi Nakabayashi, Tetsuro Hosaka

Summary: Although parents acknowledge the importance of children's nature play, they have concerns about incidents and strangers, which discourage them from allowing their children to play unsupervised in green spaces. Enhancing the quality of natural elements in parks can increase children's interaction with nature while alleviating parents' anxiety about children's safety.

Summary: This study revealed the temporal and spatial patterns of terrestrial leech abundance at Endau Rompin National Park in Malaysia and found that air humidity is the key factor influencing leech abundance, rather than host abundance. Through their sensitivity to environmental factors, leeches could serve as indicators of intact tropical rainforests.

Parents? orientation is more important for children?s visits to greenspaces than the availability of spaces and time

Mai Van Truong, Miyabi Nakabayashi, Tetsuro Hosaka

Summary: The decline in children's interactions with nature is a major concern. It is often attributed to the increase in urban living and limited access to greenspaces and time. However, parental orientations towards children's nature play also play a significant role in their interactions with nature.
