Summary: The detection and understanding of emerging contaminants (ECs) pose new challenges to water pollution control. Triclosan (TCS), an emerging contaminant widely found in the environment, is a commonly used antibacterial agent. Microdialysis (MD), a sampling technique, combined with UHPLC-QTOF/MS analysis, was used to identify endogenous metabolites as biomarkers of TCS exposure in living crucian carp. The quantification of these biomarkers using UHPLC-MS/MS provided continuous monitoring of the effect of TCS on endogenous metabolites, contributing to a better understanding of its toxicological effect.

Summary: This study discovered that taxifolin is able to effectively trap methylglyoxal (MGO), an important precursor of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), by forming MGO adducts in vitro and in vivo. Quantification studies showed that taxifolin and its metabolites can dose-dependently trap MGO. Similar results were observed in diabetic mice.

Summary: The polar extracts and essential oils of sea fennel cultivated in central Italy were analyzed. The extracts contained 21 bioactive compounds, with 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid being the most abundant. Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep/wake cycle, was identified for the first time in sea fennel extract. The essential oil was mainly composed of monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes. This study highlights the potential use of sea fennel as an edible plant and a source of nutraceutical compounds.

Summary: In this study, a suspect screening workflow combined with a semi-quantification method was used to investigate the metabolites of DiPGDB and TBTM in human urine samples collected during winter and summer. Several metabolites were identified, and the DiPGDB-M310, DiPGDB-M194, and TBTM-M498 were suggested as potential biomarkers for assessing human exposure to DiPGDB and TBTM. The semi-quantification method is valuable for studies that lack analytical standards.

Summary: A simple, sensitive, and rapid LC-MS/MS method was developed for the simultaneous determination of BIC, M7, and M8 active metabolites in SD rat plasma. The method showed excellent linearity and accuracy for quantitation in plasma samples. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed improved parameters in the BIC-NPs group compared to the BIC group, with a significant increase in AUC(0-t) for BIC and a double peak phenomenon observed for M7.

Summary: The phenolic profiles and other major metabolites in European pear juices were investigated using UHPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS and GC-FID. A total of 39 phenolic compounds were detected, and the content variations were mainly dependent on the cultivar. The genetic background and breeding selections also played a role in the chemical compositions. The results provide important information for industry and pear breeding.

Summary: In this study, a sensitive UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the determination of xylocarpin H in rat plasma. The optimized high-resolution extraction widths of fragment ions and the superimposed multiple product ions (SMPI) mode significantly improved the quantitative sensitivity of QTOF-MS/MS. The addition of the esterase inhibitor BNPP in the sample treatment process further enhanced the sensitivity of the quantitative method.

Summary: This study compared the impact of two different types of nanocarriers (Allosperse and SiO2 nanoparticles) loaded with two active ingredients (azoxystrobin and bifenthrin) on the phenolic contents and metabolic profiles of strawberries. The results showed slight decreases in total phenolic content and pelargonidin 3-glucoside content, but increases in gallic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol levels in strawberries treated with the nanoencapsulated pesticides. Principal component analysis identified the effects of nanocarriers on metabolites and phenolic profiles. Overall, while the effects of nanopesticides on strawberry plants were not obvious, there were significant molecular-level changes in plant health and fruit quality. Further research is needed to assess the impact of diverse nanopesticides on other plant metabolites.

Summary: This study used a metabolomic method to investigate the pharmacokinetics and metabolites of anwulignan in mice. The results showed that anwulignan had a long retention time in the body and was widely distributed in various tissues, with the liver having the highest concentration. Anwulignan was mainly excreted through the digestive tract and was found to undergo enterohepatic circulation. Seven metabolites of anwulignan were identified, and demethylation, hydroxylation, dehydroxylation, and demethoxylation were considered to be the main metabolic pathways.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Fufangmuniziqi formula (FFMN) on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the role of alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins in the process. The results showed that FFMN improved cognitive and memory impairment in the AD mouse model. Alkaloids enhanced the cholinergic system, while flavonoids and saponins attenuated neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. These findings suggest that the combination of alkaloid, flavonoid, and saponin fractions derived from FFMN is a promising anti-AD agent.
