A new series of six chromone-derived compounds and their Cu(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by their physical, spectral and analytical data. The ligands and their Cu(II) complexes were screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Shigella flexneri) and two Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) bacterial strains by agar-well diffusion method. The ligands were found to exhibit either no or low-to-moderate activities against one or more bacterial species whereas, the Cu(II) complexes exhibited moderate-to-high activity. The ligands which were inactive before complexation became active upon complexation with the Cu(II) metal ion and less active became more active.

An Insight into COVID-19 and Traditional Herbs: Bangladesh Perspective

Md. Mominur Rahman, Sheikh Shohag, Md. Rezaul Islam, Shomaya Akhter, Sadia Afsana Mim, Rohit Sharma, Abdur Rauf

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 was discovered in Wuhan in late 2019 and has spread worldwide, leading to the current pandemic. With the absence of targeted therapeutics, scientists are exploring synthetic bioactive compounds for potential drugs or vaccines against COVID-19. Medicinal herbs have long been used as traditional healing medications due to their broad therapeutic range and minimal side effects. Due to the lack of synthetic antiviral medications, pharmaceutical and alternative therapies have utilized herbal compositions. The widespread availability of herbal and dietary products globally has resulted in their frequent usage. This review article discusses the immunomodulatory and antiviral effects of certain herbs in Bangladesh, and how their active ingredients have been collected. Despite the availability of FDA-approved medications and vaccines for treating COVID-19, there is a push to use herbal medicine as immunomodulators and vaccine adjuvants for prevention.

Md. Rezaul Islam, Md. Mominur Rahman, Puja Sutro Dhar, Feana Tasmim Nowrin, Nasrin Sultana, Muniya Akter, Abdur Rauf, Anees Ahmed Khalil, Alessandra Gianoncelli, Giovanni Ribaudo

Summary: Ovarian cancer is a major health concern for women with no obvious cause, frequent misdiagnosis, and poor prognosis. Natural compounds have advantages in treating the disease due to their multi-target actions, long application history, and widespread availability. They are perceived to have limited adverse effects on healthy cells or tissues and show potential as valid treatment alternatives. This review discusses the mechanistic insights and possible targets of natural compounds against ovarian cancer from a medicinal chemist's perspective and provides an overview of the pharmacology of natural products studied for their potential application in treating ovarian cancer models.

Mothers and their daughters' education: a comparison of global and local aspirations

Aliya Khalid

Summary: This paper explores the portrayal of mothers as either educated and beneficial for their daughters' education or lacking education and detrimental to their daughters' future prospects, through a comparative analysis of policy texts and scholarly work. The findings are then supplemented with semi-structured interviews with rural Pakistani mothers, highlighting how mothers' aspirations contribute to their daughters' educational opportunities. The paper argues that understanding mothers' perspectives is crucial in informing global policy discourses and investigating the potential of mothers in contexts of material and social constraint.
