Summary: In this work, we implemented and validated a sensitive phosphatase inhibition assay (PPIA) for the detection of microcystins (MCs) in freshwater. By optimizing the expression and lyophilization of PP1, as well as the assay conditions, we demonstrated the feasibility of this method in algal bloom samples from Argentina. Our findings suggest that PPIA is an effective and accessible alternative to available commercial tests.

Summary: Post-translational modification (PTM) is crucial for biological events, such as bone metabolism modulation. Phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation can occur at the same site in proteins and may cause crosstalk between molecules. PP2A plays a major role in dephosphorylation, while OGT mediates O-GlcNAc modifications. PP2A inhibition affects OGT localization and expression, as shown in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells treated with OA. The change in OGT localization is due to increased mitochondrial OGT expression and translocation of the nucleocytoplasmic isoform. Knockdown of PP2A Ca significantly affects OGT expression, indicating an interaction between PP2A and OGT that strengthens the concept of phosphorylation-O-GlcNAcylation interaction.

Summary: The study investigated the toxicity of Fluoxetine (FLU) and its transformed products formed during UV photolysis using zebrafish embryos as a model. Exposure to UV-irradiated solutions led to delayed hatching time, increased heart rate, and decreased body length of the zebrafish embryos, along with changes in enzyme activity and gene expression levels. The research highlights the importance of considering the formation and persistence of toxic transformation products in aquatic environments.

Summary: Vascular barrier dysfunction, characterized by increased permeability and inflammation of endothelial cells, plays a crucial role in acute lung injury, ARDS, sepsis, and COVID-19. Ser/Thr protein phosphatases (PPases), including PP1 and PP2A, are important regulators of endothelial barrier integrity and cytoskeletal remodeling. Understanding the role of PPases in EC barrier regulation can provide insights into the development of therapeutic strategies for these lung diseases.

Summary: Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) is a global disease affecting public health and trade. The toxins causing DSP, including okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxins (DTX1 and DTX2), are collectively referred to as OAs. By determining OA equivalents for different toxins in PP2A inhibition and cytotoxicity assays, the study found that these values matched better with oral toxicity data in mice.

Summary: Ethylene is a key plant hormone that regulates growth, development, and defense responses. The study demonstrates that PP2A-B'zeta positively regulates plant germination and seedling development, while also negatively regulating ethylene signaling pathway through interaction with CTR1. Further research is needed to fully understand the role of PP2A in ethylene responses.

Summary: This study found that the physical UV-blocker CG-TiO2 could break the organic coatings and promote the chemical reactions of chemical sunscreen BP-1, leading to the formation of highly toxic products during UV irradiation. A total of 24 transformation products were identified, including hydroxyl BPs, hydroxyl dibenzo-p-dioxins, and hydroxyl benzoyl benzoquinones. This study highlights the role of CG-TiO2 in promoting the transformation of chemical sunscreens and generating higher toxicity during UV irradiation, providing scientific data for evaluating the fate and potential risk of sunscreens in the environment.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of valproic acid (VPA) on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and its mechanism. The results show that VPA decreases cell proliferation through PP2A-mediated inhibition of p-p70S6K-Thr(389). This suggests that VPA could be used in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis and in-stent restenosis.

Summary: This study demonstrates the important role of the a-isoform of the catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase-2A (PP2Ac) in regulating the immunogenicity of glioma. The deficiency of PP2Ac in glioma cells promotes dendritic cell (DC) cross-presentation, sensitizes tumors to immune-checkpoint blockade and radiotherapy treatment. Loss of PP2Ac increases interferon signaling and reduces the expression of a tumor gene signature associated with worse patient survival.

Summary: In this study, commercial MoS2 particles were used as a catalyst to enhance the Fe2+/PMS process for the removal of CBZ. The efficiency of CBZ removal by the MoS2/Fe2+/PMS process was 6.5 times higher than that of the Fe2+/PMS process, due to the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by the exposed Mo4+ on the surface of MoS2. The relative intensity of DMPO-HO center dot and DMPO- SO4-center dot further confirmed the enhanced oxidation activity with the addition of MoS2. Additionally, the commercial MoS2 showed good stability, with almost unchanged CBZ removal efficiency during multiple cycles.

Summary: Solar-driven seawater desalination based on air-water interfacial heating has attracted significant research interest for its high evaporation rate, conversion efficiency, low energy consumption, simple operation and low cost. However, the high temperature at the air-water interface can result in the volatilization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the desalinated water, causing pollution. In this study, surfactants were used for the first time to inhibit the entry of phenolic compounds into the freshwater, and it was found that the addition of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) reduced the concentration of phenol.

Summary: In this study, a super-hydrophilic honeycomb activated carbon (SHHAC) evaporator was developed for simultaneous salt rejection and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal. The SHHAC evaporator exhibited a high water evaporation rate of 1.50 kg center dot m- 2 center dot h- 1 with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 99.4%. It effectively removed salt by flowing back concentrated brine to seawater and reduced the distillation concentration ratio of phenol from 75% to 0%. The potential application of the SHHAC evaporator was demonstrated through an outdoor experiment using real seawater as the feedwater.
