Microcystins (MCs) produced by cyanobacteria are strong hepatotoxins and classified as possible carcinogens MCs pose a considerable threat to human health through tainted drinking and surface waters Herein filtrated water from a waterworks in Harbin, China was spiked with microcystin LR (MC-LR) extracted from a toxic scum of microcystis aeruginosa, and the spiked sample waters were treated using UV irradiation with consequent zonation process (UV/O-3), compared with zonation at a dose range commonly applied in water treatment plants UV irradiation at 254 nm and UV irradiation combined with zonation (UV+O-3) respectively The remaining of toxins were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and also determined using a protein phosphatase type 2A inhibition assay which was utilized to evaluate the reduction in toxicity Results indicated that in comparison to other three processes (O-3 UV, and UV+O-3), UV/O-3 process could effectively decrease both the concentration and toxicity of MC-LR at 100 mu g/L level after 5 min U V irradiation with consequent 5 nun zonation at 0 2 mg/L (below 1 mu g/L) while 0 5 mg/L ozone dose was required for the level below 0 1 mu g/L The addition of an UV treatment step to the existing treatment train may induce significant transformation of micropollutants and breaks down the natural organic matters into moieties unfavorable for ozone decomposition stabilizing the ozone residual The,e findings suggested that sequential use of UV and ozone may be a suitable method for the removal of these potentially hazardous microcystins from drinking water

MoS2 boosts the Fe2+/PMS process for carbamazepine degradation

Huan Peng, Rong Chen, Ningyao Tao, Yangyi Xiao, Chenxing Li, Tuqiao Zhang, Miaomiao Ye

Summary: In this study, commercial MoS2 particles were used as a catalyst to enhance the Fe2+/PMS process for the removal of CBZ. The efficiency of CBZ removal by the MoS2/Fe2+/PMS process was 6.5 times higher than that of the Fe2+/PMS process, due to the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ by the exposed Mo4+ on the surface of MoS2. The relative intensity of DMPO-HO center dot and DMPO- SO4-center dot further confirmed the enhanced oxidation activity with the addition of MoS2. Additionally, the commercial MoS2 showed good stability, with almost unchanged CBZ removal efficiency during multiple cycles.

Inhibition of typical phenolic compounds entering into condensed freshwater by surfactants during solar-driven seawater distillation

Chenxing Li, Xiaojiao Zhou, Yangyi Xiao, Tuqiao Zhang, Miaomiao Ye

Summary: Solar-driven seawater desalination based on air-water interfacial heating has attracted significant research interest for its high evaporation rate, conversion efficiency, low energy consumption, simple operation and low cost. However, the high temperature at the air-water interface can result in the volatilization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the desalinated water, causing pollution. In this study, surfactants were used for the first time to inhibit the entry of phenolic compounds into the freshwater, and it was found that the addition of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) reduced the concentration of phenol.

A Single Amino Acid Residue R144 of SNX16 Affects Its Ability to Inhibit the Replication of Influenza A Virus

Wenjun Shi, Li Jiang, Miaomiao Ye, Bo Wang, Yu Chang, Zhibo Shan, Xuyuan Wang, Yuzhen Hu, Hualan Chen, Chengjun Li

Summary: Influenza A virus (IAV) is a significant zoonotic pathogen. This study identified sorting nexin-16 (SNX16) as a new host factor that negatively modulates the replication of IAV. The presence of a single amino acid residue at position 144 in SNX16 plays an important role in its cellular distribution and anti-influenza function.

Differences in chemotaxis of human mesenchymal stem cells and cervical cancer cells

Yizuo Song, Ruyi Li, Miaomiao Ye, Chunyu Pan, Lihong Zheng, Zhi-wei Wang, Xueqiong Zhu

Summary: This study found that MSCs from different tissues exhibit different chemotaxis towards cervical cancer cells, with chorion-derived MSC (CD-MSC) showing the strongest tropic capacity. The CXCL12/CXCR4 pathway was identified to contribute to the differential chemotaxis of MSCs to cervical cancer cells.

Quantification and influencing factors of perioperative hidden blood loss in patients undergoing laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for benign ovarian tumours

Junhan Zhou, Miaomiao Ye, Wenxiao Jiang, Xueqiong Zhu

Summary: This study quantified hidden blood loss (HBL) and investigated its influencing factors in benign ovarian tumor patients undergoing laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy. The results showed that HBL represents a large proportion of total blood loss (TBL) during laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy and identified surgical time, number of excisional tumors, and preoperative albumin values as risk factors for HBL.

Dynamic volume variation of uterine leiomyomas during pregnancy

Miaomiao Ye, Wenbin Huang, Fengyun Chen, Weinan Chen, Xueqiong Zhu

Summary: This study investigated the volume change of uterine leiomyomas during pregnancy and explored factors affecting their growth trends. The results showed that the growth rate of uterine leiomyomas was higher from the first to second trimester compared to the second to third trimester. Smaller leiomyomas were more likely to increase in size during pregnancy, and retroplacental leiomyomas were more likely to increase in volume compared to those located away from the placenta.

Inhibition of Phenol from Entering into Condensed Freshwater by Activated Persulfate during Solar-Driven Seawater Desalination

Xiaojiao Zhou, Ningyao Tao, Wen Jin, Xingyuan Wang, Tuqiao Zhang, Miaomiao Ye

Summary: An antioxidative solar evaporator was fabricated for the first time to inhibit volatile organic compounds from entering condensed freshwater during solar-driven seawater desalination. Phenol was efficiently removed from the condensed freshwater using activated persulfate methods, but attention should be paid to the formation of halogenated distillation by-products in the future.

Miaomiao Ye, Ningyao Tao, Xiaojiao Zhou, Xingyuan Wang, Wen Jin, Tuqiao Zhang, Xiaowei Liu

Summary: In this study, a super-hydrophilic honeycomb activated carbon (SHHAC) evaporator was developed for simultaneous salt rejection and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal. The SHHAC evaporator exhibited a high water evaporation rate of 1.50 kg center dot m- 2 center dot h- 1 with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 99.4%. It effectively removed salt by flowing back concentrated brine to seawater and reduced the distillation concentration ratio of phenol from 75% to 0%. The potential application of the SHHAC evaporator was demonstrated through an outdoor experiment using real seawater as the feedwater.
