Summary: In this study, coral cell-associated microbial aggregates (CAMAs) were comprehensively characterized, revealing the presence of Endozoicomonas and Simkania bacteria. Endozoicomonas may colonize and aggregate with the host coral using secretion systems and/or pili and potentially provide vitamins. Simkania, on the other hand, may obtain acetate and heme from neighboring Endozoicomonas. This research provides detailed insights into coral endosymbionts, improving our understanding of coral physiology and health, and offering important knowledge for coral reef conservation in the face of climate change.

Summary: This study comprehensively characterized coral-associated microbial aggregates (CAMAs) in Stylophora pistillata and found multiple coexisting Endozoicomonas phylotypes. These CAMAs enriched with phosphorus have different elemental compositions from coral tissues and symbiotic Symbiodiniaceae, highlighting their role in sequestering and cycling phosphate. The consensus metagenome-assembled genomes of dominant Endozoicomonas phylotypes confirmed their metabolic potential and genomic signatures related to polyphosphate accumulation and host association.

Summary: Gaining knowledge about the causative agents of coral diseases is crucial for effective treatment and prevention. However, the causative agents of most coral diseases, including stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), remain unknown due to the difficulty of distinguishing them among the complex microbial community of coral hosts. This study aimed to investigate the size class of microorganisms associated with SCTLD transmission, but the results were inconclusive due to uncontrollable factors.

Summary: The scope of bioengineering is expanding to include the design of microbial communities, and researchers have shown that a stable two-strain community can be achieved by engineering a strain of Escherichia coli to secrete a toxin in response to competition. Experimental and mathematical evidence demonstrates that this system can produce stable populations with tunable compositions controlled by easily adjustable parameters. This approach allows for the creation of tunable, stable two-strain consortia with the potential to interface with natural microbiomes.

Summary: Coral bleaching and degradation of coral reefs have been exacerbated by human activities, particularly global warming. This study investigates the changes in bacterial and metabolic composition within coral holobionts under thermal stress and their correlation with bleaching. The results show clear signs of coral bleaching after 13 days of heating treatment, with a more complex co-occurrence network observed in the coral-associated bacterial community of the heating group. The bacterial community and metabolites undergo significant changes under thermal stress, with certain genera increasing while others associated with stress tolerance and biofilm formation decreasing. Differential expression of metabolites in heat-stressed corals is linked to cell cycle regulation and antioxidant properties. These findings enhance our understanding of the relationship between coral-symbiotic bacteria, metabolites, and the physiological response of corals to thermal stress, potentially shedding light on the mechanisms underlying bleaching.

Summary: In this study, the seasonal variation of the skin-associated microbiome in amphibians and the interactions between bacteria and fungi were investigated. The results showed differences in community composition based on season, location, salamander age, and life stage. It was also found that the skin of salamanders selectively favored certain microbes, including bacteria predicted to inhibit the amphibian chytrid fungus.

Summary: There is increasing evidence that the composition of microorganisms within a host plays a crucial role in the overall health of the holobiont. This study used sequencing techniques to analyze the coral host and its associated algal and bacterial communities. The results showed that reef zones have an impact on the structure of these communities at different scales, and there may be genotype by genotype interactions between the host and bacteria in the coral. These findings highlight the importance of local reef conditions in shaping the unique combinations of host-microbial partnerships.

Summary: Microbial infection can severely affect immune-compromised corals and lead to coral mortality. However, beneficial bacteria associated with corals have the ability to produce antimicrobial compounds that can inhibit the growth of potential pathogens. In this study, beneficial bacteria isolated from coral Porites lutea were found to produce bioactive secondary metabolites that showed significant antagonism against various coral pathogens and also inhibited protozoan ciliates and zooplankton involved in coral disease progression. These findings contribute to the understanding of the role of coral-associated beneficial bacteria in reducing coral disease severity.
